What should DH wear to DD's graduation

I've got a summer dress (thanks to S&B) but what should DH wear?
Suit and open neck shirt? He rarely wears a tie for work now but would for a wedding.
DD's boyfriend has chinos and a nice linen shirt.
Happy to be advised differently.
Graduation is in a cathedral city in the southwest.

He shouldn’t need a tie. Most men don’t even wear them to the office these days.

The style guide for a Graduation guest is the same as a wedding guest so, yes, a nice suit and open neck shirt would be fine. Actually turning up in jeans you wouldn't be turned away but you'd stick out like a sore thumb.

My partner wore jeans and a shirt five years on still haven't forgiven him!

What your husband is planning to wear sounds lovely. I also graduated in the South West in cathedral.

He wasn't the only Jeans person by the way but it looked naff in photos and I don't display them.

Thank you, it sounds like we've got it right.
@Wellandtrulyoutnumbered, hope you got your photo taken by the rock? Wink
Now to concentrate on not crying, waterproof mascara at the ready.

I've been to 3 - don't remember dh being out of place and he wore similar. Some people had cool linen combos on (but that would make dh look like he'd slept in a bin). For dd2's he wore smart chino style trousers and a nice shirt - it was boiling!

I agree that the jeans people looked a bit out of place.

My OH wore a suit and tie. But he always errs on the side of formal. My ex husband (father of the graduate) wore a suit and no tie. There was a huge mix on the day from really quite casual to formal.

Suit and open shirt or chinos, shirt, nice jacket.

dreamingofsun · 15/07/2019 10:21

real mix at the two i've attended so far. my husband wore a suit/tie/shirt but one man had shorts and a shortsleeved casual shirt. women ranged from people who looked as if they had been gardening, to ones that had fallen out of nightclubs (tended to be the fatter women) and ones going to work or weddings

It's graduations all week and they were already clogging up the roads and pavements as I drove into work, think extras from 4 weddings and a funeral! There were serious quantities of hats on display, and many of the men looked like they were going to Henley after! But anything goes, there's always a few in jeans, shorts if it's hot (no air con so sensible). Dd has to wear a full length evening gown though as she's singing the National anthem each time!
