Hair like straw!

Has anyone got any recommendations or hair regime ideas for 10 year old whose hair is currently like straw please? Would prefer high street products if possible! Diet and water intake is good.

I have very dry hair naturally, ive been using Elivive Extraordinary oil Rapid Reviver deep conditioning cream. You dont have to leave it on long its really good. The shampoo is good too

My sisters hair did this before it turned into curls!
A puberty thing.
She’d previously had hair so silky...
It became beautiful when the curls settled!

Towel dry hair before conditioning. Leave on the conditioner for a long time (15 minutes).

Raadi · 15/07/2019 16:49

Thank you, all. Interesting about the puberty thing. Will be watching carefully.

Redken Extreme shampoo and conditioner

Savers do little pots of coconut oil for 99p, they are amazing.

Put some on the ends when it's dry, leave for a few hours or overnight and wash out as you would usually wash her hair. I also use aveda Damage Remedy which is great and this is honestly just as good.

Does she swim regularly? Is it chlorine build up? Try a (proper) chlorine removing shampoo.

DD1's hair starting going very straw-like around the same age. On recommendation of the hairdresser we tried the clarifying shampoo - took several scrubs but it made a big difference.

She is a big swimmer! Hadn’t even thought of getting special shampoo for that 🙈🙈🙈 Thank you!

Kérastase Bain Clarifiante Shampoo gets rave reviews, OP.

And a good swimming hat?

And rinsing hair as soon as she gets out of the water, at least in clean water (if not able to wash it straightaway).

Drying gently - airdrying and patting with a microfibre towel, and using a wide toothed comb from the ends up, again, very gently, also can't hurt.

Raadi · 16/07/2019 06:38

Thank you Chochito! Where do you buy it? I have looked online and can see you can get it from Amazon. Is there anywhere on the high street I could get it from?

Also get her to wet her hair in the shower before she gets in the pool. That way her hair gets soaked in normal water and cannot absorb as much chlorinated water.

Olaplex.

growlingbear · 16/07/2019 07:32

It's the swimming. I'd comb coconut oil or thick conditioner into her hair before the swim and then tie it up in a tight ballet bun (that's what I do when I swim.)
You can get anti-chlorine shampoo but tbh I didn't think it made much difference. What does help is very thorough hair wash after swimming, with loads of conditioner, left on for ten minutes and then rinsed off with a final cold rinse. If it's still straw-like, then I recommend smoothing a small amount of conditioner into the ends of the hair after you've towel-dried it. Comb it through and leave it in. I do that twice a week and it stops my hair from being brittle.

Oil.... coconut/apricot/olive... any/most oils combed thru hair after it's been shampooed & dried off a bit... sleep in it/rinse in morning...

Chochito · 16/07/2019 15:51

growlingbear Do you wear a swimming hat as well? The pools I go to make you shower before swimming, to get rid of creams / oils / dirt on your hair and skin, and so I can only follow BoredBoardBored 's tip of wetting hair with clean water before getting into the pool, which I do find works well.

OP, you can buy Kérastase from hair salons, but I'm sure it's cheaper online.

growlingbear · 17/07/2019 11:36

I don't wear a swimming hat but I wrap my hair up in a very tight ballerina knot so it doesn't rinse off into the water.
