Full slip under dress or just give up?

I've bought a summer dress that I love and look good in. Perfect colour for me and one I find very rarely. It's a soft grey blue.

It's a wrap dress. I live in windy West Wales so would normally never consider this but I do love the dress.

It also has a low wrap neckline. I don't usually mind this but it works itself so lox you can see the little bow at the top of my bra.

I've tried the size up but it just looks meh.

Can anyone recommend a good full slip that I won't mind flashing (because it will) or is this dress just more trouble than it's worth?

You can buy little pins that keep the neckline in place.

Well bless me.

Thanks Soola. I'll have a look.

I brought a bra at M&S which I think would work for you! It's an ordinary bra with a lace section at the top to bring it higher up the chest - I wear it under a wrap dress and as the dress move (as they inevitably do) all you see is the lace. I find if I wear a slip or camisole under it ruins the lines!

Thanks I love willow. I shall have a look.

Anyone think a slip is OK? I've never used one.

Slips are great but not if you re in a hot climate or suffer from overheating!

What about a little brooch or pin?

margaritasbythesea · 13/07/2019 16:36

It's flashing my knickers I'm as worried about as the boobs. I could cope with one but not both.

Cooling slips from m and s. They genuinely do keep you warm in winter and cool in summer! My ones are reversible, one neckline is a plain V and the other scoop with a bit of lace.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 13/07/2019 16:47

yes yes to a nice slip, you'll probably find the dress does ride over your bra nearly as much

I have some nice ones that I got from Primark of all places, you need a bit of weight in them or they just join in the riding up

Either that or a nice modesty panel which I think the PP has linked to

I’m a huge fan of slips for “smoothing” purposes, but I’m not sure I’d be happy to flash one.

These M&S ones are good, and come in a variety of lengths which is handy.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't particularly want to flash it but I'm sure it will.

Someone must do a pretty one for this reason.

I have some pretty M&S ones OP, often wear under a dress. John Lewis do them too but slightly more matronly!

womaninthedark · 13/07/2019 18:52

Stitch it. Back in the days of bralessness and cheesecloth shirts, I used to stitch myself in to avoid disaster. Worked really well. Tiny stitches.

margaritasbythesea · 13/07/2019 19:21

OK. I'll have another look at MandS. I could only see quite plain ones.

Do you mean stitch the skirt or both womaninthedark?

I bought the £1.50 plain vest tops from Primark and cut them to just below my bra. Works perfectly.

Falafel19 · 15/07/2019 17:21

I wear lightweight cycling shorts type things under dresses and a light vest top if the neck is too low.

margaritasbythesea · 15/07/2019 21:02

Thanks for those ideas.

Tiny safety pins can work wonders. I would not give up on a lovely dress just because of this.

M&S do a bra (looks like it’s only available in boring colours though) with an ultra low centre which might help. Aside from that if a bra bow pops out and it just very occasionally, does it matter?

LifeOfBox · 16/07/2019 06:44

I wear these. Plain enough to flash without looking matronly imo.

I wear a lot of wrap dresses and they save me from flashing my knickers in the wind on a weekly basis!

userabcname · 16/07/2019 06:51

I bought a strapless, tight, thigh high mini dress on boohoo.com - the type those much younger and slimmer would wear to go clubbing - and I use it under dresses that look see-through or might expose me. I went for a tan/nude colour but you could find something nicer or to match your wrap dress I'm sure.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 16/07/2019 07:41

Sew a press-stud into the neckline and the skirt to hold it closed?

TheCatThatDanced · 16/07/2019 10:49

I saw a slip (not sure if full or half) under a dress worn by a woman in the street the other day and it just looked odd, from the back, you could really see it!

Stitching (tiny) or tiny safety pins were my go to. I'd stitch long term though or get someone to do it for you as safety pins are a drag to do every time.

StCharlotte · 16/07/2019 14:38

Slips are great but not if you re in a hot climate or suffer from overheating!

I think she'll be okay in West Wales - even in a full on menopausal flush!

(I would wear a full plain slip - preferably in a colour that's in the dress)

TheCatThatDanced · 18/07/2019 13:22

StCharlotte - I don't think humid weather (London?) copes well with slips either - the woman I saw the other day looked like the slip was sticking to her... I was walking fairly close behind (rush hour!).
