As I child I was desperate for black patent leather shoes and my mother would never buy me them saying I would scuff them ☹️
Now aged 50 I have just ordered some black patent loafers and feeling smug that I am finally going to wear the shoes I was so desperately wanted as a child .
They may not be in fashion now but who cares . Think they will look grand with black skinny's and grey shirt .
I am going to wear them next time I visit the parents 😆

My mum never let me have patent shoes for the same reason. I always buy Clarks black patent leather Hamble Oaks for work now. They never scuff unlike the normal ones just need going over with a cloth to make them shiny again. Mum still comments on them though.

I bought DMs too as I never had them when i was young, although that was largely down to the cost. Just bought my fourth pair in their sale. My parents still don't like them.

2pointfourmonkeys · 13/07/2019 08:16

My mum always said this, but actually these days I buy patent for the kids because it is more hardwearing than the leather!

CountFosco · 13/07/2019 08:30

Patent these days is much better than it was back in the 70s and 80s where it was really stiff. I have bought the DC patent shoes and they are hardwearing and I have a three pairs of patent shoes myself.

dottiedodah · 13/07/2019 08:39

I love black patent shoes too. Hope you enjoy them .Mum insisted on Brown leather shoes for school ,but Nan got me some black platform shoes !.Never ever buy Brown shoes or boots even now!

@Singleandproud Nice to hear that you have rebelled against your mum too 😁 I do like the clarks hamble oaks , was reading a thread back along about them .
Thank you everyone for your support in my little rebellion, it's only taken me until I'm 50 but hey , looking forward to getting them in post now .
Thank you for the Office link (last poster ) just had a look and think I may be topping up my shoe collection.
Children definitely have more shoes today as they are so much cheaper , we had welly's , school shoes and plimsoles and that was it . Anything lovely and shiny was seen as frivolous.

I could think of different things is she meeting her milestones.
Please do see you GP and well done in recognising that your feelings aren’t the norm.
It’s hard work bringing up a child not to talk of two
Take care of yourself

I only had one pair of non-patent school shoes (grey Start-Rite ones) which scuffed horrifically. After that my DM always said I had to have patent Clarks shoes because they didn't scuff as much (and they didn't!). Isn't it funny how people can have different solutions to the same problems!

Ah yes to the Magic Keys 😍 I had a white patent summer pair of those when I was about 8 or 9!

XingMing · 13/07/2019 17:56

All misty-eyed at the memory of some glorious charcoal grey patent Pancaldi shoes from Henri Bendel in 1984... I wore them to death.

BubblesBuddy · 13/07/2019 18:30

I told my DD not to buy Louboutins! Oh well!

wibbletooth · 13/07/2019 19:42

I always wanted a pair of navy blue shoes for school when I was little - my mother always used to buy us red shoes and I loathed them for years - was well into my 30s if not 40s by the time I ever bought red footwear for myself!

Turned out that the reason that she always bought us red shoes was because when she was little (during the war and afterwards) she was only allowed black, navy or brown (depending on what they had available) and was never allowed any jolly colours like red so she was determined that when she grew up and had daughters they would never have to suffer having horrible boring dark shoes... She could never understand why we hated red shoes so much when to her they were a thing of desire - she never thought to ask 'what shoes would you like?' as to her it was obvious that we would want red as that was what she wanted. Such a simple thing to ask but says a massive amount when it's not said.

I just have sons so have't had the red shoe/black shoe dilemma to impose on them!

BiBiBirdie · 13/07/2019 19:44

Snap OP!
I bought a pair of patent brogues from Hotter about 3 years ago and they are lovely. And 3 years on, they are scuff free (up yours Mother!Grin)
Wear them with pride knowing it's slightly naughty to like I do

billhubbard · 13/07/2019 20:11

@wibbletooth Thats kind of happy and sad in the fact your mum was desperate for you to have the thing she longed for .... trouble is you wanted them in blue not red .
It is nice to be a grown up and choose exactly what we want .
