That's it really. Want to buy one decent item of clothing every month instead of loads of crap. Where to go, what to buy.........?

Toast, Whistles, Reiss, Jigsaw, Jaeger, White Company, Boden, Barbour.

I’m sure there are more but I can never remember where else I buy.

Ninkaninus · 12/07/2019 15:33

What to buy... cotton, linen, wool, other natural fibres.

Classic pieces that all go together so that you will get more out of your wardrobe.

Good footwear.

Great bag(s).

Ninkaninus · 12/07/2019 15:43

I’m looking to do the same from now on.

I’m definitely feeling a shift in focus - started last year when I decided I really wanted to have a capsule wardrobe of carefully chosen and considered items rather than a shitload of stuff, and now it’s starting to lean towards wanting to support ethical production (as far as possible). I’m not sure where it’ll take me, but I know that buying less and buying well is a very good start.

Make sure you know what colours suit your skin undertone, and build your wardrobe in a thoughtful and considered way so that you end up with pieces you will actually use (paying more does help with that IME - I have to really love a piece now before I will actually spend on it, and I don’t keep anything that isn’t exactly right).

nzeire · 12/07/2019 15:48

This is what I do! I love everything I own! Sell on when tired of it. Everything I have, I love, and wear. A lot!

Live in Nz though :)

Atalune · 12/07/2019 15:49

And other stories, Cos, Arket, J crew.

Also look for these places in the sale.

kaytees · 12/07/2019 16:12

Oooh I am very into this idea! Have just come back from hols and realised I could survive 3 weeks with just a suitcase so it's time for a capsule wardrobe / spend more but well.

My plan is what others have suggested: natural fibres / ethically produced items where possible, otherwise pre loved higher end items.

There are some good 'classic' pieces in the outnet sale today (trench coats and knitwear especially).

ADesignForLife · 12/07/2019 17:07

Watching as I’m looking to do the same once I go back to work from mat leave! I’ve booked myself a JL stylist appointment and I’m planning to buy some decent black trousers, a good jacket and a silk blouse.

Almahart · 12/07/2019 21:00

I’ve thought of doing this in the past, I think it’s a great idea

FiveGoMadInDorset · 12/07/2019 21:02

I have just started this, mainly Seasalt as I am plus size which they do and I don’t feel frumpy in them

Swiftier · 12/07/2019 21:22

I started doing something similar a while ago. I just decided to stop buying lower quality/high quantity and just limit myself to one or two more expensive items a month. I spend up to £200/300 a month.

What worked for me was to write a list of things I needed/wanted, which I kept updated as I thought of things/needed to replace items. So things like one or two really nice basic t-shirts, one or two nice basic jumpers etc. And then every month buy something from the list. Having the list stopped me impulse buying and helped me to just focus on smaller numbers of nicer things. I’ve mostly bought good quality basics. Also as I’ve bought things I have reduced my wardrobe, donating stuff I’m not wearing to the charity shop. This means my wardrobe is half the size and I actually wear the nicer stuff I’ve invested in more regularly.

Shops I like are Jigsaw, Whistles, Cos.

Swiftier · 12/07/2019 21:23

Oh yes and everything I buy I’m now super fussy over, I’ll mull things over (hence having a list works, if it’s still on the list and still appeals after a couple of months then it’s a winner). And this also means good fabrics and fits.

ferretface · 13/07/2019 14:41

Sezane, Calipige both worth checking out (do check the fibres).

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 13/07/2019 16:02

Thanks all - some lovely ideas here to take a look at. I had forgotten about J Crew and am not sure about Sezane, it all looks gorgeous but what is its sizing like and does it wear well?

Did someone mention high end pre-loved?
Find a shop that deals in this sort of thing.
Bond Street to My Street in Cranbrook is great, especially bags. She's on FB and does a bag of the week video. Holds a lot of stock bags, shoes, clothes. (I don't have a vested interest btw)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/07/2019 17:18

I'd start with:
a cross body bag
a tote bag
a lightweight casual jacket
I'd then save up two months worth and get a leather jacket

Anois · 13/07/2019 17:29

Definitely going to start this too. I'm sick of impulse buying and being left with clothes that launder poorly or are synthetic, sweaty fabrics.

A question though - do you buy expensive tights and socks? Are they worth the extra cost? I already spend a fortune on lingerie as I wear a 34G bra and hate bounce.

I'm thinking some nice dresses, pure wool sweaters and some good quality trousers to start once autumn/winter collections arrive in the shops.

SlipperOrchid · 13/07/2019 19:26

Can I join in too please?

I no longer want to buy and return loads. I want carefully chosen pieces that I will feel good in and look good on me.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/07/2019 19:46

Wolford tights are nice, but I'd only ever buy them half price!

Anois · 13/07/2019 19:54

Are Wolford noticeably better? Looking at prices of opaques in Ireland of €35-50. 😯😯

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/07/2019 19:59

They are nicer than M&S but I've only ever bought when very reduced.

Anois · 13/07/2019 20:03

Thanks Remus, I'll keep checking for them in sales, it just seems a lot for tights. Imagine the horror of catching them on a ring? 😂

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/07/2019 20:11

Oh I only buy the opaque and fishnet/lacy ones. There's no way I'd spend more than a fiver or so on sheer!

kaytees · 13/07/2019 20:11

@TarragonSauce it was me! Thank you, I'll check that out. There's a couple of high end resellers near me in London that sonetimes have a gem. Also, if you can stand it - joining resell groups on Facebook for particular labels. I recently got a lovely Acne mohair cardigan on one and was so happy!

Cailleachian · 13/07/2019 20:26

Wolford tights are amazing!!

I would never have bought them for myself, but a friend bought the wrong size and offered them to me. That was nearly 7 years ago. I still have the tights and wear them regularly. I've never had another pair of tights thats survived more than a couple of washes.

EmpressJewel · 13/07/2019 21:07

They sometimes have Wolford tights in TK Maxx.
