Anyone successfully grown their hair long after 45?

I'm mid 40's, my hair is just a little past shoulder length. It's a bit dry, thick and I use to colour it frequently but haven't done so for around 4 months, just used a colour shampoo now & then. My last 'trim' was in March, where I had a good inch off with some longer layers put through.

I wash & condition my hair about e try two days, usually blow dry. I sometimes straighten it, always use a heat protection spray. I've just started to use a leave in conditioner instead of usual conditioner, to see if that will help my hair condition.

I want to grown my hair longer, ideally about boob length, however I just think, now at my age it's just going to take forever, I've got to this stage before & it just doesn't seem to get very long, or it starts to look too dry, so I end up having it cut. By not colouring it anymore & using the leave in conditioner, I'm hoping it will not look too bad. I'm wondering has anyone over the age of 45 grown their hair from shoulder length (or indeed shorter to quite long? Or do you think hair growth rate just really slows down & will only grow to a certain length & that's it?

Mine was shoulder length for years. I decided to grow it longer in my 40's. I wanted just below bra strap length. It's taken years to get there despite looking after it, good diet, trimming the ends regularly. But I bloody love it and definitely not going any shorter ever again.

I'm in my 50's and my hair is just starting to improve.
I don't use heat on it and have never / would never use use straighteners. I no longer colour it, and haven't for a year.
I use leave in conditioner, and I wash it twice a week with Johnson's top to toe as has no parabens, alcohol, or sulphate. Sometimes I just do a cowash.
It's half way down my back and lovely condition.
I have gone through the menopause, that dried it terribly.

What leave in conditioner do people use please?

youvegottobekidding thanks! After cancer and chemo I went through a truly dreadful phase of body hate but I've got through that now and part of my self care is taking care of what I look like so hair and clothes are important. I also do daily yoga. I always had issues with my dad making snidely comments if I 'dressed up' or wore make up and as a feminist found it hard to get excited about what I looked like ( I didn't own a mirror for about 20 years). But now I so enjoy looking after myself!

It’s a myth that you can’t grow long hair after a certain age - and one perpetuated by western hairdressers mostly. In India all older women have long hair and it only rarely thins / breaks. As your hair is dry The trick is to only wash and condition once a week, and use hair oil before washing to limit breakage. Amla hair oil is the best for damaged hair. Almond hair oil is best if you have hair loss. Coconut oil should only be used if you have porous hair.

Enjoying these replies. I am 50 and have always had longish hair - at moment bra strap length - it's fine hair but there's a lot of it. Unfortunately due to illness my hair is now shedding a lot - I'm getting quite paranoid about it - am having tests for things and have very very low iron which doesn't help - my GP isn't so concerned about the hair loss element and says that as I'm nearing menopause this is normal - am wondering whether post menopause it will go back to less shedding ? Or is there something I could do to stop the shedding diet or supplement etc ?

Bleached / highlighted hair would be considered more porous l suppose teddy? 🙂

I did a few years ago in my early 40's .. I have very thick curly hair so it just got bigger .. I have it shoulder length now and I think that is more flattering .. if you have flat hair though and it's styled I think it can look lovely . I never really understand Mum bobs and short hair but obvs each to their own .

At 60, I decided to see if my hair would grow back to waist-length & it did! I've had it cut since, but it's still long & thick. It slows down a lot in winter & grows incredibly fast in the summer.

I guess if your hair has always been the type to go long, it still will. If it would never grow beyond a certain length, it probably won't when you're older.

Yes! I had short hair since I was about 5, until age 45, two years ago, when a new hairdresser mentioned about growing it. It took about 18 months and it's long now. I love it! Why did I wait so long.

My husband has to help me wash it as I'm disabled, so its washed 2 or max 3 times a week. I use conditioner on the ends only, or sometimes a leave-in product.

My stylist says my hair is in great nick, so I'm happy. I love the variety I can get with it. I'd say go for it!

Sooverthemill · 11/07/2019 18:08

steelriver I only wish my hair once a week. And for my disabled daughter I never wash more often than fortnightly often much longer
