Dd not dad

TastingTheRainbow · 10/07/2019 20:00

And this right here is one of the reasons the NHS is falling apart!

NoBaggyPants · 10/07/2019 20:00

@madcatladyforever Wasn't your treatment 25 years ago? The NHS has significantly restricted funding for cosmetic treatments since then.

Kero123 · 10/07/2019 20:01

I had a few ops on my nose when i was little due to secondary cleft palete and as far as i believe it wasnt set right and ever since it slants to one side and it has effected me my whole life

Correcting a cleft palate is not cosmetic surgery if there is a clinical need for the surgery.

You're not helping yourself by giving half a story. Was the psychologist under mental health services or maxillofacial?

Kero123 · 10/07/2019 20:10

The cleft palate its self has been sorted.
It was under mental health sevices.

NoBaggyPants · 10/07/2019 20:15

Mental health services definitely don't decide who has cosmetic surgery. The best they can do in that respect is suggest your GP refers you to be assessed as to whether you're eligible for surgery, but the likelihood is that will be a no.

Are you seeing the psychologist again?

Kero123 · 10/07/2019 20:18

My gp originally sent a referral i then had to go for photographs and then received a letter to see psychologist which ive seen now. So now waiting on a letter to see what happens next.

OP posts:
NoBaggyPants · 10/07/2019 20:20

They didn't tell you?

If the psychologist supports your position, your case will need to go to a funding panel. They'll want to see that other avenues (such as therapy) have been explored before even considering surgery.

Kero123 · 10/07/2019 20:22

Yeah she told me it will go to a panel and tht she will support my case but i wont find out what happens until i get a letter.

Kero123 · 10/07/2019 20:25

Have you been in this position before or do you work in this dept?? As you seem to know all about it?

whitershadeofpale · 10/07/2019 20:27

Cleft patients can have additional surgery as adults, it’s very common. You should look to get referred to an adult cleft term though, this will be led by a plastic surgeon with expertise in this field as well as a maxilliofacial surgeon and psychologist. I would ask for a referral to your nearest adult centre (Broomfields is very good if it’s in your area).

Kero123 · 10/07/2019 20:33

Thank you for this info i will see my gp about this Smile

God, people are so rude on this board! Amazing how anonymity emboldens people Hmm

RLOU30 · 10/07/2019 21:06

You should have put this on the mental health board instead of style/beauty as it doesn't come across how you want it to.

Kero123 · 10/07/2019 21:10

I wasnt aware it was under that i dont recall picking any category i just started a new thread and this is what happened. I am new to this.

OP posts:
Kero123 · 10/07/2019 21:12

Oh i see it now i dont know how i managed that. I would have changed that if i had known. Thanks for pointing it out.

OP posts:
RLOU30 · 10/07/2019 21:31

No worries, just thought you would get a different range of replies.

Soola · 10/07/2019 21:32

I would have not left my previous comment if I had known it was down to your having a cleft palette.

My mother was born with a harelip/cleft palette and endured numerous operations as a child.

It puts a completely different perspective on your situation if you’ve had surgery to correct the inside but the outside has been left in an unnatural position.

I wish you well

Kero123 · 10/07/2019 21:36

Thank you!

Kero, you might be lucky, i had bags under my eye removed on the NHS in 1982, i was amazed and didn't ask for it, but my Dr at the time referred me, i didn't have to see a psychologist, and had it donr fairly quickly, they had always bothered me, and i had them from being very young
Also am having a brow lift on the NHS in 2 weeks,
Not as good as it sounds,
I was reffered by my optician as my peripheral vision is not good, due to having bells palsy about 10 years ago,
The optician thought it was a dropped lid, but the surgeon said it was my brow that has dropped and is giving me a fixated brow lift, which will also look much better as i dont seem to have a visible eyelid on one eye,, so don't worry you will get it i am sure, although it has taken 12 months for me, but my Dr applied for funding last year, i saw the surgeon last month and he said he would do it on the 21st of this month, good luck

Kero123 · 10/07/2019 22:52

@princessTiasmum thank you i have my fingers crossed. And good luck to you too Smile

OP posts:
princessTiasmum · 10/07/2019 22:56

Thank youKero take no notice of negative comments if there is no good reason they woulfdn't even consider it,
Your op might look cosmetically better, as mine will, but it isn't being done for cosmetic reasons, that is the difference

fraxion · 11/07/2019 08:14

No chance on NHS my dad broke her nose and has breathing difficulties and they won’t do it

I've had a few ENT problems/ops, constantly blocked up like I have a cold. I have a perfectly nice nose but the consultant said it needs internal reconstruction work which would entail a 4 hour op. I said no because the thought terrifies me plus he said he doesn't recommend it. Have you asked for a referral?

Good luck OP.
