Clothes for 'Tweens'

RomaineCalm · 07/07/2019 23:48

Just spent a very unsuccessful afternoon shopping with DS who is 12. All of my previous 'go to' places don't have clothes that are quite big enough (e.g only go up to age 12/13). Adult clothes are too big.

Shoes are difficult as adult sizes seem to start at size 8 but children's sizes stop at size 5/6.

What am I missing and where should I now go? Where do 12/13/14 year olds get clothes?

Next - do a boys range up to 16 years old
H&M - do a boys range up to 14 years old
JD Sports
Top Man - do sizes from XXXS
River Island - do sizes from XXS
Gap
Urban Outfitters - depends on height

TantricTwist · 08/07/2019 00:01

What do you mean Adult shoe sizes start at a size 8 that's massive Shock where are you shopping?

New Look does good Tween and Teen sizes and their shoes go up to a size 7. Although I'm a size 7 and they don't fit my feet.

My DD 12 goes shopping on her own now and goes in all the shops and buys stuff from everywhere like New Look, Pull and Bear, H&M, Zara, Top Shop, Primark. She is very slim but can wear a size 4 in adult clothes. She will buy clothes on sales racks if she's on her own with friends.
Otherwise I may buy her items online that she has tried on a knows she wants.

TantricTwist · 08/07/2019 00:01

Oh crap just realised you were talking about DS not DD Ooops

TheSmallAssassin · 08/07/2019 00:07

Next don't always have their larger sizes in stock in their shops, but you can order online or in store and get them sent to the shop for free, usually next day delivery.

TantricTwist · 08/07/2019 00:10

But I can help as I have a DS 13 who is tall at 5' 7' with size 10 feet.

I buy a lot of his tops in TK Maxx as he likes a certain style which they sometimes have and his shoes / trainers annoyingly are adult prices and are Nike.

His jeans are from Next and Zara and are the only places I could get his slim waist and leg length. Had to order online though as they don't exist in the shops.

I bought him some plain T-shirts in Primark this weekend. I haven't bought him kids clothes for a while. He has some Superdry mens T-shirts I bought in the sale although he doesn't care for brands.

He has branded foot wear as it lasts longer.

PeriComoToes · 08/07/2019 00:10

Next only stock up to age 12 iirc in store. You have to but online for ages up to 16.

There's a real gap in the market I feel for the 12/13/14 age group especially if your child is tall but still has quite a 'childish' physique.

TantricTwist · 08/07/2019 00:15

Most mens shops have sizes small enough for Tweens now.

My DS still fits into his Star Wars T-shirts from M&S although they would be too small to warrant buying now. Which would be for age 14 which I bought when he was 11 / 12.

TantricTwist · 08/07/2019 00:16

Yes there definitely is a huge gap in the market thank god for school uniform for the week days.

pikapikachu · 08/07/2019 00:17

Ds wears Next jeans (goes up to age 16) and tops from JD Sports (sometimes mens XS, sometimes teens )

H&M goes up to size age 14+
You can buy trainers in a 6/7 (?) and Next children's shoes go up to a 6.

Primark do mens XS size

pikapikachu · 08/07/2019 00:18

Need to confirm what your ds' style is. My ds is a skinny jeans and sports brand t-shirt/hoodie with trainers sort of boy

pikapikachu · 08/07/2019 00:20

New Look Men comes in XXS too. I've never seen it in store but it's online

TantricTwist · 08/07/2019 00:22

Yes my DS Primark mens T-shirt is a size S although they do go down to an XS and possibly even an XXS I believe. It was only £2. The other colours I wanted for him had all sold out in the S and M. I bought him mens flip flops from Primark too in size L for his size 10's.

TantricTwist · 08/07/2019 00:25

My DS is a straight leg jean, with non-sports logo T-shirt and hoody and trainers sort of boy. Bloody difficult to buy for. Wish he'd wear sports tops and bottoms like everyone else. He likes a picture on his tops though and favours long sleeve T-Shirts Confused Hmm

TantricTwist · 08/07/2019 00:27

And I wish he was capable of shopping on his own like his younger DD.

BluntAndToThePoint · 08/07/2019 00:29

Matalan do boys up to 16 years old.
Sports Direct for branded t-shirts/hoodies.

DropZoneOne · 08/07/2019 00:51

I shop for DD, but our "go to" is Primark. The kids section goes up big enough, and then she raids the adults for 2XS too. H&M online go up to 14 and then a couple of nicer bits online from Next.

Gekeos · 08/07/2019 01:25

I have a DS same age, River island (but stops at age 12) Next online, mini Boden is great for plain polo tops tracksuit bottoms etc and it's cheap compared to designer brands, jd sports for branded stuff, H&M, if he likes branded designer children wear (online) is good and Alexandalexa.

FogCutter · 08/07/2019 02:05

Ds is a tall and skinny 12 year old. He wears-

Trainers! Kids trainers only go up to 5.5 so from size 6 he's been in men's trainers from sports direct or JD sports.

Adidas tracksuit bottoms or primark skinny jeans.

Some branded (Adidas, north face) or band/ gaming t shirt and hoodie from the Adidas outlet store, sports direct, tk max or eBay- mostly eBay as I cannot bear to pay the ridiculous price of new branded stuff!

TeaKettleBell · 08/07/2019 07:37

Uniqlo for t-shirts and Primark do extra small/small that fit well.
Pull & Bear seem that have trousers that work for tweens. I bought 12-13 size trousers in H&M and Primark.

RomaineCalm · 08/07/2019 13:01

Thank you. Some great suggestions and much appreciated. I never shop in H&M, River Island or TKMaxx so hadn't thought to look there for boys' clothes.

Not sure that DS really has a 'style'. He'd live in tracksuit bottoms/shorts and Nike t-shirts and hoodies but does need something slightly smarter for some family events and a presentation evening over the summer. Was thinking trousers, a couple of shirts, even a smart/casual blazer or jacket would work. Shoes are the hardest - there's very little between trainers/pumps and school shoes!

I have some new ideas now though - thank you!

Hollister is probably worth looking at too- does the smarter/ preppy American thing well. Ds who is 13 has quite a bit from hollister, H&M and Vans. School trousers, socks etc still come from next.
