Size 16 style

What do you think looks good for work clothes on a generous size 16 slightly pear shape?
It's a smart casual dress code. I wear lots of floaty a line dresses from h&m but think I look a bit like a sack in them. I've bought a wide leg jump suit but very nervous about what it'll look like when it arrives....
If you are a size 16-18 what do you get most compliments for wearing? Need some ideas and confidence Sad

I went in H&M recently - and assumed the clothes were for children as they came up so small!!!

Following with interest

I'm size 16 - I tend to wear tunic style tops over slim trousers and sandals/flat shoes in summer and jumper dresses over thick tights and boots in winter. I'm very pear (large bottom and stomach) so I avoid short tops.

LaVieilleHarpie · 07/07/2019 22:35

Having been a 16/18 myself, unfortunately I found it very difficult to find clothes that fit right and looked good unless I was willing to spend big money or have things tailored.

Skater dresses and wrap tops were my best bets back then, flattering on a larger frame!

It depends on your age and how stylish/conservative your taste is (and your workplace)

John Lewis is a good starting point, as they have a bit of everything

M&S do some good staples in all sizes and occasional stylish bits (only in the big shops)

Boden when on sale - good for skirts that aren't super short

Oasis/Warehouse go up to size 18 now.

Step away from H&M -they aren't usually good enough quality fabric to flatter the larger figure

Midi dresses in plain colours? Or midi skirts with shorter tops (ie blouses in light fabrics that finish near the waist so they don't create bulk where you tuck them in (or only half need to tuck)

Flat shoes which are pointed to elongate the leg = flattering

:-)

I think jumpsuits are good. For some reason I look frumpy in dresses and less so (or so I fancy!) in a culotte jumpsuit. I don't like wrap neckline ones though, just a simple round neck.
With mid heel sandals (block for me)

Titsywoo · 07/07/2019 23:54

I got a great jumpsuit from h&m recently. Wide leg and a lovely soft viscous fabric. Very flattering and I'm a 16/18. To be honest I tend to wear what I like! Anything looks great with the right underwear and attitude Wink

I buy Next tapered trousers in black and in navy and Boden pencil skirts.
Pair them with nice top from anywhere and pointy flats from M&S.
I was size 22 so I think I look amazing in size 16 anything :)

Zara are doing some nice trousers at the moment in 16/XL. I bought some flared black ones, they are elasticated at the top but just fall really nicely. I wear things like this with nice tops, linen works well, nothing too clingy and like someone else said, a good bra works wonders!
I am a 16/18 and do you know what? Shock, horror, I like it! I like my wobbly bits and think that I look nice a lot of the time. Big jewellery is also a favourite of mine!

JamieFraserskiltspeaksout · 10/07/2019 21:37

I've been looking for some big jewellery. I don't have any but I always like it on others!

I am a size 14/16 pear, and jumpsuits are a big no-no on me. The buttons invariably gape over my stomach and, if I go up a size, it ends up being too baggy on the top. I am quite short, though - a taller pear might pull it off better.

I like slim leg (not skinny) trousers with less fitted tops normally. The current fashion for tucking in tops doesn't work for me because it adds bulk exactly where I don't want it, and emphasises my stomach. But I also don't like voluminous baggy tops, so I tend to choose things that fall to the tops of my thighs and have a bit of stretch (not flimsy, thin fabrics though).

I definitely have to think more about what I wear than I did as a skinny 20-something, but it's possible to look put-together if you find what suits you and avoid unflattering trends just because the shops are full of them - tie-front cropped t-shirts, I'm looking at you...

I'm a size 18 and wear dresses to work, I have a tummy so trousers just make me look bigger.

So nice Tea dresses and smart / matching shoes.

JamieFraserskiltspeaksout · 11/07/2019 05:29

Oh yes I love a tea dress!
Checkingout that's exactly what happened! The jumpsuit I ordered was huge on top but fitted ok everywhere else. It's going back Sad

I get quite a lot from Wallis as they are quite generous in sizing and a perma sale, I have slim legs but a heavy middle. I never, ever wear skirts or dresses, don’t own any. I like slim legged trousers and a longer top, I like overlayered tops a lot.

StCharlotte · 11/07/2019 13:58

I'm a bit bigger than you and more of an apple (so probably no use whatsoever Grin) but I tend to go for a narrow bottom half (like MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly above) with a well-fitting tunic or top.

Skater dresses are flattering and you can get smart work-like ones easily.
