Fail safe outfits

Do you have any outfits that you know are totally appropriate for a specific occasion and always make you feel like you look half decent?

Eg:
I have a good selection of work clothes and usually feel like I'm dressed appropriately and look reasonable - wide legged trousers and a wrap top for example, or a pretty skirt and fitted black top.

Going out - decent jeans, high wedges and a nice top of some sort.

But I really struggle with what to wear for:
going shopping - especially shoes;
going on walks with the family - especially shoes;
going out somewhere that jeans wouldn't be appropriate (I always tend to look/feel like I'm going to work then).

SO in my rambly way I'm asking for inspiration for What To Wear When.....

Cheers ladies!

hmm
my workplace is pretty casual so I tend mostly to wear
jeans / cords / linen trous
boots or wedges
fitted tshirts/tops
whether I'm going to work, shopping or going on wlaks etc

my going out clothes are nicer than my work clothes

semi-casual boots are v useful
[rummages for pic]
thus

I wear uniform at work and don't go out much ().

So ALL my clothes are for shopping and family rambling!!

Shopping = jeans / denim skirt + nice top + flat boots / flip flops / ballet pumps.

Family rambling = combats / shorts + T shirt +fleece + cag + walking boots / trainers + baby (lol).

janeitebus · 27/07/2007 20:35

Ooh I like those boots.

Scatty - your rambling wear sounds very appropriate for the occasion but I find walking boots soooooo heavy and uncomfortable and trainers so ugly. In fact, I just hate shoes, full stop. Am I to be resigned to feet hurting in inappropriate shoes, or is there something out there that feels like walking in slippers?

What sort of coat do you wear for walks Mrsbadger? or does that bring us back to the "There is no such thing as a decent looking raincoat" type thread?

What do you wear on your feet then?

janeitebus · 27/07/2007 20:52

Lol- nothing if I can get away with it! But usually just ballet flat type shoes, or small wedges. Flip flops if it's warm. But I need something more solid and comfortable, for walking around town or for trekking around on holiday; am not talking 20 mile hikes, more city-walking, schlepping around museums etc.

Is there such a thing as a decent looking pair of trainers that won't make me look like a wannabe-teenager? I know many people on here like Converse but I just can't bring myself to do it, especially as both my dds wear them.

Oh and another daft question - if you're wearing jeans or a denim skirt, what kind of jacket do you wear? I know I can't wear denim and denim but what else would keep me warm if the weather is like this all summer but won't be too heavy to carry if it warms up a bit?

God I sound totally useless don't I? I need a casual capsule wardrobe - anybody want to suggest one?

Thanks!

Try Camper shoes, or the funkier end of Clarks casual range

If I'm being rural in the rain I'll wear unattractive performance outerwear, if urban then mac-type raincoat with umbrella or hat.

Jacket-wise I tend toward the fitted blazery type things - have several in cord, cotton, cotton/linen etc
Also wear zippy cardies this kind of shape (though obv less pricey) as jackets.

Am going to be lazy and link to the capsule wardrobe I posted in Feb...

Camper/camperstyle shoes v. good.

IKWYM re jacket with jeans. Have a lovely denim jacket but rarely get to weat it.
I am currently doing safari style jacket (choc brown).

Happy shopping.

I have just bought a fab fitted jacket in Peacocks - very dark purple canvas type material for £15. They had other colours as well - it looks great with jeans or a skirt. Purple isnt usually my colour at all but this is a nice one.

I cant really help with shoes, everyone else always has better ones than me! I do have some like these www.next.co.uk/shopping/women/shoes/28/6 whic are not beautiful but are very comfy and look ok with jeans (better than trainers do anyway)

Those are nice shoes Orangeelephant.

puppydavies · 28/07/2007 12:12

for walks/shopping in the summer i wear these. really don't care how they look (although i think they're okay, esp w/crops, casual/sporty look) cos they are so damned comfy. i walked miles and miles in them last summer without a single blister, have never had a comfier pair of shoes.

Fab ideas thanks everyone; keep em coming! So I've been shopping today and I've bought:

  • grey wide legged linen trousers with a lighter stripe
  • black wide legged linen trousers
  • black slip on trainer things; a bit similar to the Next ones that Orange posted - not the most attractive things on earth by any means but seem quite comfortable
  • black linen blazer type jacket

Totally failed to find a raincoat that I would even contemplate wearing though - but I do have a good umberella!

Oh and I tried some Campers on too - loved them but the fit was all wrong; size 4 far too big but size 3 not quite big enough. They didn't have any half sizes. Roll on Autumn so I can wear boots again.

Long plain skirt, stretchy tube or bias-cut
Vest top under v-neck fitted cardi. Can't go wrong, esp if all one colour. Goes with boots, sandals, mules.

Dresses with boots sound nice for casual weekends in the Autumn, Aniemac. Any specific types of dresses?
