To think DD's graduation dress is lovely?

My 21 year old DD has her graduation soon.

She ordered this lovely dress (see pic) and I've told her I like it but she's telling me she thinks it looks like a wedding dress and that she's too fat to wear it (despite my reassurances that she doesn't!) Excuse the background folks but,

What do you think?

The dress looks lovely on her and NO WAY is she fat, but as others have said a graduation gown might be hard to try and clip on.

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/07/2019 21:14

Only about 10% of women wore a shirt/jacket when I graduated from an RG university. I would have got heat exhaustion in a jacket, the gown had all the soft texture of car tyres.

foreverhanging · 04/07/2019 21:14

Fat?!?! Goodness me, what fat?!

She looks amazing!

sweetnsuga123 · 04/07/2019 21:14

Yes great point about attaching the gown I will chat to her about dress code.

She looks absolutely beautiful.

I have had three graduations with gowns and have always worn a dress. Can’t remember if it was a problem but I am sure it was nothing a safety pin couldn’t fix.

Lucked · 04/07/2019 21:21

Dress code is often black and/or white so dress would be fine.

Sandybval · 04/07/2019 21:27

It's gorgeous, and perfect for a graduation!

dementedma · 04/07/2019 21:28

Dress code for Dd was all black dress, or black skirt with white blouse. Suits or kilts for boys. I would nt have thought it a graduation dress just based on my experiences, but she looks lovely

itwaseverthus · 04/07/2019 21:31

She looks absolutely beautiful. Seen more fat on a butcher's pencil Grin

Loopytiles · 04/07/2019 21:33

Looks good!

timeforakinderworld · 04/07/2019 21:33

I think it looks lovely. I wore a dress for my graduation, no problem. (I prefer the blue for your kitchen walls btw).

foodiefil · 04/07/2019 21:34

Fab! I'd go for a dark coloured block shoe to edge it up a bit but that's just me. She could sling a leather biker on for the same effect.

Congratulations - hope she enjoys her graduation

BookClubBlues · 04/07/2019 21:35

She looks lovely but I don’t think it’s appropriate for graduation actually, I think she’s right. It’s not just attaching to the gown, it’s a bit too ‘summer party’ and graduations are more formal than that. (I have done 2 myself from different uni’s plus attended a few others due to my job so I have experience in this)

Yotam · 04/07/2019 21:48

I agree with BookClubBlues - it’s a lovely dress and your daughter looks great in it but it does look too informal for a graduation to me. I’m sure she will get lots of use out of it at summer parties and nights out (assuming it stays hot!) but not a formal event.

ElizaPancakes · 04/07/2019 22:05

I think it's lovely. I wouldn't wear it for a graduation personally, I dressed in a smart trousers and shirt for my graduation but there was people in dresses and even linen trousers and flip flops, it didn't seem to matter.

Apolloanddaphne · 05/07/2019 06:11

It is gorgeous on her. My DD has also chosen a white dress for her forthcoming graduation and we plan to take a safety pin to attach her hood to the front. Her uni allows the graduands to wear whatever they want. No dress code.

Yorkshireswithallroasts · 05/07/2019 06:23

I manage a graduation team at a university. I promise you it is fine. She looks lovely.

GCAcademic · 05/07/2019 06:26

Having attended graduation every year for the last 15 years, I can confirm that many, many students don’t wear what some of us consider “suitable” dress for graduation. Last summer I was agog at some of the outfits: cleavage hanging out, tiny hemlines, and stripper heels, despite instructions to wear business dress. OP’s daughter will look relatively formal, I promise!
