Loose running shorts which aren't too short?

swissmilk · 03/07/2019 18:16

Do these exist?
I'd like to run with bare legs now the weather is so warm, but don't really want the world and his dog to get a good view of my arse, so many loose shorts are really short.
I like the double layer ones with cycling shorts underneath, but they are too warm for this weather.
Anyone seen any cheapish ones online or on the high street?

You might have to go for mens to get that shape!

Waxlyrically · 03/07/2019 20:29

Watching with interest as would love to know this too. All women’s running shorts are either skin tight or really short. In fact they are often both these things and of course must be have some obligatory pink somewhere!

AskMeHow · 03/07/2019 20:37

Yes. I struggled for years with running shorts.

I buy mens now. The current ones I wear are Nike ones that come to just above my knees, in a sort of mesh material with a lining so it isn't see through. They're not hot in the summer. They also have great pockets!

Bought a pair from Decathlon too last week from their kalenji range. Nice thin material, cut quite slim but not tight.

I've given up on women's shorts, they're basically all hotpants.

swissmilk · 03/07/2019 22:02

I've looked at the men's ones, I'm just quite curvy even though I'm size 10 and they don't fit right.
I agree with all the comments so far, why don't longer women's running shorts exist?!
We don't all want to dressed for bloody instagram to exercise.

I was going to suggest men’s too although I have to shop around to find good ones. I’m also liking decathlon and Nike

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 04/07/2019 00:01

Have you tried hiking shorts? Maybe a silly question as I don't really run, but you can now get some really nice lightweight technical fabric ones. The cut tends to be fitted but loose and they usually end mid thigh. They have to to be cut to be flexible enough for stile-clambering so should be flexible enough for running?

Decathlon have some (sorry for rubbish link): www.decathlon.co.uk/w-mh100-shorts-dark-grey-id_8493752.html?iv_=iv_p_1_g_63052683495_c_316341522215_w_pla-306378754696_n_g_d_m_v__l__t__r_1o4x_pla_y_15177021_f_online_o_2566432_z_GB_i_en_j_306378754696_s__e__h_1007128_ii__vi&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1Nm78uyZ4wIVzJPtCh1-jgXSEAQYBCABEgJZrPD_BwE

But I have also seen proper walking brands do them too

Stumpedasatree · 04/07/2019 08:34

I have just got Women's Motion Running Shorts with Zip Pocket - Black, M [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07LH7QTTP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_3NAhDbRHB21M4?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 these]] and they are light and loose, but may be a little shorter than you are wanting? Personally in the summer I prefer shorter as I get too hot, and dont like anything restricting my leg movements when running.

Stumpedasatree · 04/07/2019 08:35

Sorry link bracket total fail

bottersnikes · 04/07/2019 08:55

I am always on the lookout for these, too!
Asics and Brooks used to do some longer shorts, but they have been discontinued. They occasionally turn up on EBay, so it's worth keeping an eye out there.
Inov8 do these:

Any good?

Dungarees · 04/07/2019 09:00

No answer but I'm having the same problem.

I bought the double layer ones and they are ok, but they ride up when I run.

I don't know why all women's running shorts are so ridiculously short.

Stumpedasatree · 04/07/2019 09:32

Just a repost of my Amazon link earlier, sorry here, loose but probably too short.

The Inov 8 ones posted above look perfect for you though!

sonjadog · 04/07/2019 09:37

I use short yoga pants. They are loose and about knee length.

runningtogetskinny · 04/07/2019 09:42

I bought some in H&M, mid thigh length and with zip pockets. They're loose and very lightweight but not sure if they still stock them as bought in April. Worth a look on the website

Sheusedtobesomeonelse · 04/07/2019 09:48

I have some Adidas ones which are super comfy and not as short as some of my other ones -the leg is 3.5 inches i think.. am not sure of the exact model though.. the pocket in th eback is probably the best too, and the waist band is very soft, no chaffing even for very long runs.
My marathon ones are Nike they are very short but much comfier as the in-built knickers DO NOT BUDGE (so important!!).

swissmilk · 04/07/2019 12:24

thanks @Stumpedasatree they are pretty short.
I'm confused as to why mens shorts aren't really short, but they can still run presumably?
If the fabric is light-weight and loose, it should restrict running without me feeling exposed?
I run alone (with my dog) in the woods and I would feel more confident more covered up - plus I'm a 5ker, so not running loads to get too hot, and so don't need tiny shorts to help with serious heat, just enough to feel nice and breezy.

Haven't RTFT but Sweaty Betty do some that look double layer but actually aren't. They're great

lekkerkroketje · 04/07/2019 13:24

Ronhill describe these as longer, although the still look pretty arse-skimming to me. All the stuff I've had from them has worn ok.

I hate the shorts with built-in leggings combo that seems to be the thing at the moment. If I wanted cycle shorts, I'd wear cycle shorts! I've started wearing football shorts, although they're a bit sweaty

dollyknocker · 04/07/2019 13:32

I have some great ones from Decathlon. Brand is Kalenji or something like that! Think they were under trail shorts.

Sheusedtobesomeonelse · 04/07/2019 13:44

Yup, Kalenji shorts are also good, and cheap as chips especially if you dont need to wear them for more than a couple of hours, they do ride up my bum slightly but the fabric is really light and overall a bargain compared to some prices!

OvalCanvas · 04/07/2019 13:49

I used to wear flimsy cropped leggings or cycling shorts under my tiny running shorts.

I feel your pain op.

TheHoundsofLove · 04/07/2019 16:46

I've been having a nightmare finding suitable running shorts too! I'm perfectly happy with mid thigh, but I agree that they're all like hot pants. I even ordered some from Land's End, thinking they might be more 'sensible' - they were the skimpiest of the lot! I don't know why they're all so short as I find it an impractical length for running, due to them always seeming to end exactly at the point where my thighs meet and so rubbing (and I'm only a size 12 with slim legs)!
The best I've found are the Ronhill Twin Stride Shorts - they are the cycling shorts / shorts combo, but they're a decent length and really lightweight.
