Starting roaccutane today - question?

After suffering for so long with bad acne I've finally got my prescription today and to start 40mg per day of roaccutane.

What moisturiser should I get? It must be oil free and non clogging of the pores...

Also, the dermatology appointments procedure is a load of shit - I've waited two years to be seen and given this drug. I've apparently missed two appointments during this time (I never did!). The consultant advised me to make an appointment for four weeks time to get another prescription and to have my bloods checked. The receptionist said she can't give me an appointment there and then and her next appointment is end of September. That's way past the four week mark, slightly confused as to how I'm meant to get my prescription... consultant said I'd be looking at around a 6 month course minimum SadHmmConfused

I had to email the consultant’s secretary to bring forward every single appointment when I was taking it.
Our local service have handed back their contract and it’s been taken over by a private company. Too much demand not enough supply...
I found the LRP toleraine moisturiser really good when I was taking it. And eight hour cream for my lips.

This is something that only your hospital appointments system can answer.

LaLemonLa · 01/07/2019 18:18

@Heratnumber7 I know technically only they can explain it but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced similar, such as Flamingo's post.

@FrowningFlamingo What mg did you start on? How was your experience?

I can’t remember my dose, sorry! I’ve had two courses. I don’t mind being on it, get dry lips and inside my nose but otherwise ok.
It works for me while I’m on it but unfortunately not permanent for me. Getting pregnant cleared mine and it’s still good 4m post partum so I’m hoping it lasts.

I used roaccutane about 15-20 years ago. It worked really well for me, though I have no idea what the dose was.
I remember doing 6 wks on half a dose to be sure I could tolerate it then the consultant upped the dose.
I had horrendous dry flaky skin, particularly on my face, but it worked and I didn't need a second round.
It has left me with v dry eyes though. I don't produce enough tears, and that's led to eye infections, but it's worth it.

My daughter was prescribed roaccutane a couple of years ago. Her dermatologist recommended a simple skin care routine using the cetaphil cleanser and moisturiser. She also used blistex for her lips. She didn’t suffer too much with dry skin and was even able to continue wearing her contact lenses.

Dd1 is on it currently. She cleanses and moisturises with Coconut oil and finds Aquafor the best lip balm.
She was started on 35mg for the first month and then upped to 40mg and now 60mg. She's fine and her skin doesn't look too dry but is very sensitive to the sun. So she needs a very good sunscreen.
I can't help you regarding the appointment system unfortunately as we've had to go privately. The waiting time was so long. Dd's acne was getting pretty bad and I was very concerned about scarring.

I’ve just finished my course on Sunday. I used the Aldi q10 cream.

Ring the consultants secretary, main switchboard will put you through to them.

I can’t help you with the appt system either. But just a word of caution: you can get a purging of the skin when you start. Often your consultant has a regime for dealing with this, seems your consultant doesn’t but I suppose you could try and contact her/him if this happens. My starting dose was 10mg and I did get a nasty purging. Max dose I needed was 20mg because it worked. Dry-ish skin (the relief compared to the oil tank I was!), v dry lips. I found Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream to be best for lips.
