Curly girl method advice for straight hair

Hi S & B gurus! I’ve always blow-dried my hair - with a quick blow-dry my long, one-length hair is poker straight (no straighteners needed). However, in the hot weather last week, i thought I’d just leave my hair to dry naturally and discovered the slightest hint of wave/curl and twisting hair into a bun made it really nice and textured. I think my hair’s probably changed a little since having a baby.

It made me think I really fancy trying to encourage any kind of natural curl that there might be and wondered if the curly girl method might work? Will probably was into it, but any advice would be really great! Could peeps kindly recommend any shampoos/conditioners to start with, ideally ones that aren’t crazily expensive and that I can buy from the supermarket? And best products/tips to make mostly straight hair curl as naturally as possible?

Thank you! 💁‍♀️ x

Noughty shampoo, etc, worth a try. Not expensive and you can get it in Boots/Superdrug

CantspellWontspell · 01/07/2019 14:49

Anything without sulphate, silicones and drying alcohol will do. Super-drug do their own version that is cheap and cheerful.

Best to join a group on Facebook and possibly one that has people who know about wavy hair as many of the products/techniques don’t work the same on it.

I've got naturally wavy hair, which I'm hoping might become curly with CGM.

I started just over a week ago. I did a last, clarifying wash with Johnson's baby shampoo and now I use As I Am co-wash and then conditioner. I get it from Amazon.

So far, so good. It looks fab after I've co-washed it and let dry, but doesn't last long. Waiting for my Eureka moment when all my curls fall into place 😂.

Thanks all - some great suggestions. 😊 x

If you use Instagram follow marissacurls she has some brilliant posts on the cgm. Pantene curl mousse is fab and I 2nd the noughty products they are fab. The curly girl method is alot of information and can seem over helming but you really can keep it simple

The 'Happy' range which you can get in Sainsbury's is silicone free.

Umberto scrunching jelly makes my wavy hair curly. You have scrunch out the crunchiness when dry though!

Peachyx2505 · 02/07/2019 07:51

Superdrug extracts conditioner... cheap as chips, always on offer. If you want to go full on curly girl then no shampoo. You can go low poo and for that I'd recommend kind natured from boots xx

I've just started with this exact same thing!

Photo attached here is what my hair looked like blow-dried on a high heat, weighed down by it's own length, without layers. Often straightened, often tied back, often wearing a helmet for various sports. It would always have a kink and a tendency to frizz. I had no idea it might go wavy/curly.

Key for me so far (although I'm super new to this) is not brushing it no matter how tempting! My hair is very fine, although there's lots of it, and brushing just knocks the wave out of it.

Go for it Grin

I use Faith in Nature shampoo and conditioner, and the Cantu hair products, both which you can get at Boots.

Greenvalleymama · 02/07/2019 18:23

Lots of scrunching when wet will make the most of the curl. You need to allow the hair to clump together when it's wet, and not disturb it at all until it's completely dry, that for me was the key to getting the best curl. There are lots of You tube videos and lots of different methods to try.

Buy cheap products to begin with (the Tesco or Superdrug own are fine as long as they are CG friendly) and upgrade if they're not working for you.

QueenBlueberries · 02/07/2019 18:27

ALso, when your hair is almost dry, you can put it in a bun, or ideally two buns or four buns! for about half an hour and it will create a bit of volume/waves.

twosoups1972 · 02/07/2019 20:59

I think if you do CG properly, you don’t use any shampoo at all, just co-wash. I could be wrong though.

I've been curly curling for a while now and while it sounds like my hair has more natural curl than yours I've found the best combination for me has been Johnson's Baby Top to Toe wash, followed by a Shea Moisture conditioner, followed by a Shea Curl Creme.

I wrap in a cotton t-shirt for a couple of minutes, never brush or comb it and leave to dry naturally which is sometimes a pain.

But it's been trial and error on the products. Start off with the cheapest ones and fingers crossed you'll find something that works for you.

There are a few websites that list supermarket stockists of curly girl stuff. I've found this one is good for an easy to read list;

Good luck!

Are there shampoo bars that are suitable?

Teddybear45 · 02/07/2019 23:17

Whether curly girl methods work on your hair depends on your hair type and whether the curl you have is natural or caused by damage. The method was originally designed for Afro-Indian type hair that is thick, somewhat coarse, but light / porous, and has natural curl / wave and so the methods may be too much for some hair-types and cause hair loss. If you have smooth silky hair nn-porous hair then I suggest not using the curly girl method at all.

PsGal · 26/07/2019 12:56

How often are you guys washing your hair? I'm just starting out but really struggled with the product in it being all crunchy.
