Holiday attire for those of the fat leg

I am finally going abroad! Hurrah... first time since having kids 7 years ago. But we are going to a hot hot place, 40 degrees or so with no guaranteed air con!
Here in the UK I live in knee length dresses, maxi skirts and occasionally a maxi dress. But I fear I will bake alive!
I can't wear shorts, my legs are fat and minging.
Where do people suggest for cheap! Cheap! Summer clothes for those who are fat of leg? I am a size 12 and fairly narrow on top, just carry weight on hips and legs unfortunately, like a weeble.
I am thinking cropped trousers (hot) or flowing knee length skirts. Need some quick ideas as taking kids to Primarni on Friday evening to get them shorts and stuff, and would like to do my shopping too whilst I am there.... any ideas would be amazing!

Fake tan which will be replaced by the real thing once you’re out there makes all legs look slimmer/better.

I wouldn’t waste money on clothes trying to disguise and cover you up as you’ll probably find them hot and uncomfortable.

Loose clothing in natural fabrics to keep you cool. Buy a size or two bigger for comfort and wear a pair of men’s cotton boxers if your legs rub at the top.

PregnantOnPurpose · 24/06/2019 22:30

I'm the same:( my anxiety is beginning to spiral just because I'm going on holiday with my family and DP and i know they love to take photos.

Shorts look absolutely ridiculous on me, no matter what style, my thighs rub and send the shorts right up my..

Skirts I can pull off, but my thighs are so bloody aft they sweat, chafe and get really sore. For context, I wore a midi dress to a christening last year and I had to make a mad dash to the loo because my thighs had sweat that much while I was sat down it dripped down my legs and made it look like I'd peed myself!

I honestly cant find anything that is nice looking and not too hot :( let me know if you find anything

BentBaastard · 24/06/2019 22:40

Put roll on deodorant on your inner thighs.

Life changing.

girlofthenorth · 24/06/2019 22:48

If you can get to Matalan the have some really nice things for summer, maxi skirts that look nice and thin and long kaftany things . I have the same problem , I just take more roomy stuff and long things .the thing is with the cropped trousers, is that they may end up being too hot .

crazycatbaby · 24/06/2019 22:53

Snag chub rub shorts under dresses/skirts you're welcome Wink

DailyMailcanfuckthefuckoff · 24/06/2019 23:00

A pair of cotton cycle shorts under dresses works WONDERS for my otherwise-vicious chubrub, and I stay cool thanks to the cotton. Unfortunately there isn't a Primark near me but I'm sure they'll have some. (Just in case: my 100% cotton ones are from H&M if you can't find any in Primark.)

Chewbecca · 24/06/2019 23:02

I just wear shorts despite my trunks. I wear Fat Face’s Bermuda shorts with a cotton top.

averylongtimeago · 25/06/2019 08:52

Floaty skirts and dresses are great when it's hot. Tight skimpy tops and shorts are actually hotter imo.
For chub rub invest in cotton leggings/ cycling shorts - you can get a special cream but I'm not sure what it's called.

What I would say is: no one will care what you are wearing - I am a traditionally built granny and there is always some one even more traditionally built than me!

Mumof1andacat · 25/06/2019 08:56

I tend to wear linen trousers or floaty style trousers with a print on them. Lots in the shops at the moment

Teddybear45 · 25/06/2019 09:09

If your legs are chubby but toned thigh length shorts will be fine.

Peachesandcream14 · 25/06/2019 09:17

I am also chunky of leg and pear shaped, and found my pre baby high waisted Levi's cut offs no longer fit/suit me. While I like midi skirts and dresses I missed the practicality of shorts and did a LOT of hunting and I think I've found the holy grail of shorts for pears. They are mid rather than high rise (which I find are usually too big on the waist if they fit my hips and sit awkwardly) and have deceivingly loose legs so don't cut into your thigh when you sit down, all in all very flattering. They come in light wash denim, black and white from the brand Raey at matches. They are expensive, but I buy things on a cost per wear basis and know I will get it down to pennies if I buy a good basic.

NiteFlights · 25/06/2019 09:31

Maxi or midi skirts in thin cotton. I can’t wear trousers in hot weather. Wear cotton underwear, cotton everything! It really helps. You get a breeze on your legs.

poopypants · 25/06/2019 09:32

Peachesandcream the OP is looking in Primark. No amount of 'cost per wear' statements is going to be appropriate when suggesting £220 shorts to someone shopping at Primark.

ACurlyWurly · 25/06/2019 09:37

My very fat wobbly thighs thank me all summer for roll on deodorant as @bentbaastard suggests, it is a life changer! no more chub rub and sweat patches my fat thighs just glide over each other. take deodorant stick if you have hand luggage as the stick int classed as liquid.

I always take things to cover up in and then get so hot I realise I dont care what I look like in the day anymore and wobble free! I save my floaty skirts for the evening.

Hoppinggreen · 25/06/2019 09:39

I’m a size 16 with fat legs, I know I never going to look my best in shorts but I’ve just accepted that and wear them. My legs are usually a pretty good colour and I dont have much cellulite or other marks so while I don’t look great in shorts I’m not going to scare small children either!
I have a few pairs of the Boden chino ones in khaki, dark pinky red and navy and wear them with fitted but not skin tight tops, I find a belt helps too as I’m an hourglass
If you really don’t feel you can wear shorts OP get some anti thigh rub undies to wear under dresses but I find dresses a bit sweaty in the nether region when very hot
I work on the basis that there will always be someone who looks better than me and always someone who looks worse so I should wear what I want

goose1964 · 25/06/2019 09:39

Something like this would be really cool.
www.lagenlookclothinguk.co.uk/collections/tunics/products/lagenlook-martha-linen-shirt-in-white-code-90936

As for thigh rubbing I find keeping the area well moisturised helps.

Deadringer · 25/06/2019 09:44

I don't think you will do better that light floaty maxi dresses, they are ideal for hot weather and fat legs I find Vaseline on inside of thighs helps greatly with chub rub. I would love to be able to wear dresses, but I am short and dumpy and fat and they are just awful on me.

IggyAce · 25/06/2019 09:44

Asda’s little angels liquid talc helps stop my thigh rub in summer.
Asda have some lovely linen trousers in full length and cropped for £10-£12.
Agree with pp Matalan have some lovely things in at the moment, I got some lovely 100% cotton vests for £8 each.

Happinessbegins · 25/06/2019 09:47

Yes long floaty skirts and wide floaty trousers would look good and are cooler than shorts anyway.

sundaylast · 25/06/2019 09:56

I'm on holiday just now and I say beep it! Honestly people of all sizes just go with what is cool! This year I got some sloggie long length pants that go down just past mid thigh honestly best things I've bought for wearing dresses they are so soft and haven't rode up at all and I have gigantic thighs!

Beachcomber · 25/06/2019 10:07

Have you tried denim shorts? Not tiny cut off ones but properly cut nice denim ones. I look rubbish in shorts in general but denim ones seem to work for me and I've yet to see anyone not look good in denim shorts no matter what their size or body type.

They are also surprisingly cool for something that is like jeans. I live in a hot place and I live in these all summer. Not the cheapest but I really like Levi's 501 long shorts (they aren't long they are shorts but not tiny ones. They are a proper length and not tight in the thigh so are loose enough in the leg to be flattering even when you sit down)

If you really really don't want to wear shorts what about a jumpsuit. They always look fab IMO and are cool and easy to wear.

Don't be hard on yourself and your body though. Where I live, women of all ages, shapes and sizes wear shorts, minis, etc because it's hot and nobody cares and everyone looks just great.

Smellbow · 25/06/2019 10:10

I have legs that are much fatter than the rest of me no matter what weight I am, hideous veins, milk bottle skin ... I feel your pain.

Viscose trousers are absolutely the way forward. I got a cheap pair one year in TK Maxx to go to Sardinia and they are actually way cooler than wearing shorts and less likely to sweat and chafe than any maxidress or skirt. I now have four pairs and rotate them in the summer! I feel comfortable in warm climes for the first time in my life.

championquartz · 25/06/2019 11:25

Like sundaylast I say beep it too. I have heavy legs and to some they are not my most attractive feature (although actually, no one has ever said that to me, thanks internal voice). However, they work wonderfully well, and for that I am very grateful. If you are a size 12 they cannot be as bad as you are telling yourself. Honestly. Shorts really are the handiest for hot hols.
Next do a denim boy short and many like them lots. Zara and H+M are good too.
Next shorts
I have sun dresses but really shorts are handier.

meisthree · 25/06/2019 11:51

Thank you for all the replies! Some of the links have been very useful. Love the shirt dress and floaty trousers!
I am going to Primark to pick up some shorts and t-shirts for my two girls. But I am not limited to shopping there (I have never actually bought anything from there as everytime I go in it feels too manic!)....but it is in a shopping centre type place so I think H&M and other shops are nearby. I normally online shop for clothes but I feel such an odd shape at the moment that I think I need to try stuff on - especially if I am considering shorts (which still scare the life out of me, despite the body positive comments on here!).
Will let you know if I find anything wonderful!

Last time I was in primark there was a lot of knee length and midi skirts in thin fabrics and also strappy dresses of similar lengths. Mini isn’t really in at the moment and city (around knee length) shorts are also popular at the moment so I think you should find quite a few pieces that are flattering for your figure. H&M usually have quite cheap thin shirts and shirt dresses in their divided side too so it’s worth looking in there.
