Natural shampoo - can I go to the hairdresser?

Hi, I’m doing the transition to natural shampoo and desperately hoping my hair calms down soon. I’ve read that you shouldn’t go back to using normal shampoo or you start the process again. But does this mean I can never go to the hairdresser and get my hair washed there? Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks for your help Grin

Just take your own shampoo in, or, wash before you go and go in with it wet or wet with just water when you are there.

JustMe9 · 23/06/2019 18:45

What do you mean by natural shampoo?? Shampoo without SLS etc?

haverhill · 23/06/2019 18:46

I use Faith in Nature. The occasional use of ‘normal’ shampoo doesn’t do any harm.

icecreamsundae32 · 23/06/2019 18:47

Take your own and ask them to use that?!

Pindlesandneedles · 23/06/2019 18:49

Yep, solid shampoo no spa... I thought about taking my own but I was a bit worried they’d be Confused! @haverhill good to know that it doesn’t make too much difference. Maybe I’ll just risk it.

Either take your own in, or wash it at home and go in wet, or wash it in the morning and tell them it's clean and could they just wet it.

I used to take my conditioner in when I was conditioner washing only (no shampoo, so silicones, no drying alcohols, blah blah blah so I didn't trust their products). They thought I was weird, but used it anyway!

I can't imagine a hairdresser having a problem with just finding clean hair to wet it before cutting. Surely they'd be pleased to skip a shampoo/condition?!

haverhill · 23/06/2019 18:54

Once you’re over the first stage of straw hair, you can occasionally use siliconey stuff. It’s the repeated build-up that causes issues.

No idea about your actual question, as I've not been to a hairdresser since I started shampoo bars, but out of curiosity, how long have you been using bar shampoo? I started about 3 weeks ago and my hair still feels sticky and grotty. I'm hoping it won't last too much longer and soon I'll be "transitioned"..!

Pindlesandneedles · 23/06/2019 19:01

@flipsyflops I’ve been using it a month, I’ve heard it can take up to two months. I found the cider vinegar rinse helped but my hair is still a bit Hmm. Thinking a new cut might improve it? Good tip on the wash and then go in with wet hair, I’ll try that. Thank you so much everyone for your replies!

I found that when I went to the hairdresser one wash with their normal shampoo sent me straight back to square one Confused

Flipsyflops · 23/06/2019 20:14

2 months Shock Sad !!

I shall persevere. I have tried the cider vinegar rinse a couple of times. Might try being more consistent with that. Sigh.

I'm really hoping this is going to be worth it!

I went through a few shampoo bars, the amica soap ones left my hair horrible but the funky soap company ones are lovely, I never went through straw hair phase and can have my hair washed by the hairdresser with all his products and go back to my bars no problem.

Sparrowlegs248 · 23/06/2019 20:51

Which bar are you using? I've tried over the period of a year, with 4 different bars. I've switched back to bottles. Sone were better than others, but none were great. The Lamazuma was the worst (And most expensive) and one of the Lush ones the best. But still not good enough.

swimwithaview · 24/06/2019 07:24

I went back to liquid because I didn’t find any of the bars good long term, but I use the Faith In Nature refill scheme: www.faithinnature.co.uk/article/faith-in-nature-refill-stations.aspx Or you can buy the 5l bottles yourself.

Not perfect but better than a new bottle every time.

YesQueen · 24/06/2019 09:04

Take your own. I don't use shampoo and my hairdresser is happy to use my own products
