Permanent hair colour: I used some for the first time and it is just too bright

My hair is dark blonde naturally I guess with lighter bits on top from sun etc. Lots of grey recently though so I decided to use Nice and easy on it (Really can't afford to get it done at hairdressers).

The colour I used was dark champagne blonde but it is actually pretty bright and I am afraid it will get brighter if we get some sun. Roots also too noticeable. So...what if I use a light brown colour on top, would they react together or would that be OK? Lightest brown they do is called something like light golden blonde.

As you can probably tell I am new to this. Haven't ever died my hair except for blu when I was 20 and then the odd go of Sun in about 10 years ago...I am out of my depth.

Any advice will be gratefully received!

I remember using Sun-in in my teens!!! My then hairdresser told me that washing it in washing up liquid would take away the brightness. Not sure if that is true though.

fawkeoff · 25/07/2007 20:20

there shouldnt be a problem putting that on over it.........or u could just by a toner that will take the brassiness off.......they sell these in superdrug, tescos, boot etc etc etc.

kittylouise · 25/07/2007 20:20

Don't put brown dye on top because it will make it go green - some kind of reaction is caused apparently.

A friend did exactly this once, and her hair seriously went khaki. Well, we all laughed afterwards but at the time she was distraught! And had to go to the hairdressers and pay a fortune to have it out right.

If you put tomato ketchup on the top that will help to take the brassiness out - leave it on for about 20 mins and then rinse out - will look like you hgave been butchered but may help.

Good luck!!

Give it a week or so of washing every day and the colour will fade. Does it suit your skin tone?

hufflebranpuff · 25/07/2007 20:21

I wouldn't put another permanant colour on top of what you have as it might damage your hair. Could you use a wash-in wash-out vegetable based dye for a few weeks first to give your hair a rest?

I use to colour my hair myself when I was younger, but I wasn't really aiming for a natural look then. Now that I'm covering grey and trying to make it look natural I get the hairdresser to do it and she uses a semi-permanent on me to avoid the grey roots problem.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 25/07/2007 20:23

KL - I have used colours one on top of the other and never had a bad reaction to any combination. ATM I have blonde highlights and an all-over reddish colour (so the blonde bits are bright red). If you look on the colour map on top of the box it should give you an idea what colour it turns out. I think Henna is an exception, or used to be years ago. That was tricky and needed growing out before applying another colour.

kittylouise · 25/07/2007 20:23

years of hair dye disasters here. I never looked like the person on the box!

CristinaTheAstonishing · 25/07/2007 20:24

Yes, I agree that using colours one on top of the other is likely to damage the hair, particularly noticeable if it's been natural for so long.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 25/07/2007 20:25

No, I never look like the person on the box either. Much to DS's surprise as he keeps choosing the colours for me based on the picture.

kittylouise · 25/07/2007 20:27

Yes - I think though that I expected to have miraculously developed cheekbones and perfect skin and would look exactly like the model (fool).

Same as cutting pictures outof mags, taking it to the hairdresser and expecting to turn into Jennifer Aniston!

soyabean · 25/07/2007 20:28

Thanks everyone. Hufflebranpuff I did get a supposedly non permanent colour last summer at a hairdressers to cover the grey but it must have reacted with sun or something as I did end up with visible roots. Have tried some wash in colours but they dont seem to do anything to the really grey bits.

Oh dear, maybe I am stuck with it. The ketchup sounds scary kittyloouise (and smelly?!)

Cristina I think it looks OK with my skin, but I just feel it is too obviously dyed! I would like something more subtle. I think I made the mistake of matching the sunbleached bits of hair, when actually most of my hair was a darker shade...

I guess I should try a wash in and see what the result is.

I have my dark brown (or grey) hair coloured at the hairdressers and always get them to put some "ash" into the colour. Otherwise it ends up looking very artificial.

kittylouise · 25/07/2007 20:32

you will probably find that the colour tones down a bit after a while, so will probably look ok in a week or so.

Then the dreaded roots will start to appear!

southeastastra · 25/07/2007 20:35

i did this years ago and it went really bright weirdy colour. i just put brown back on it quickly! it looked better probabaly best to go to hairdresses to get it sorted out properly

dressedupnowheretogo · 25/07/2007 20:36

im a hairdresser kitty is right by the way

i would advise bying a semi permanent from superdrug in an ash colour and popping that over top so a medium ash brown would tone it down too

hth

any more detailed an answer needed let me know

princessLUCYKATE · 25/07/2007 20:55

my hair is dark blonde too, with grey in it. i find nice and easy colours come out much lighter than it shows on the box. have also used their champagne blonde and didn't like it either.

i find this suits my hair better, schwarzkopf country colours shade 40, nevada dark blonde. to get rid of the champagne blonde, i used this one over the top about a week after. it didn't fully take so coloured it again 5 weeks after that. don't know if a professional would advise to do that or not but it worked for me. it's so close to my natural hair colour, root growth hardly shows. i use this one all the time now, just to hide they grey.

soyabean · 26/07/2007 10:18

Thanks v much for your advice, think I'd better get down to Superdrug

It has purple toner and neutrelizes the bright yellow.
