Graduation in a couple of weeks but don't have any idea of what to wear, as in not just what do I fancy wearing but also what is the expectation. Scared of turning up and looking like I am the MOB.

Vision of being stylish, modern but elegant. Hate feeling I'm not appropriate! I've posted in the past and love being pushed out of my comfort zone!
Need the whole outfit, including footwear.

Size 8 and 5ft 3"

Love a bargain including eBay.
If anyone has time to spare, I would appreciate links to actual items rather than just broad suggestions.

TIA!

I'm not sure of your complexion, but I love this:

Long Dress or Shorter Dress

Heels or Sandals

Clutch

It depends which university it is to an extent. We did university of Leeds last year and people wore everything from jeans to summer dresses, don’t remember any hats or wedding type outfits. Men in anything from jeans to smart suits. Nobody minds, the staff were not all looking particularly smart either although the robes looked impressive. Be comfortable, wear something that will look good in the photos for years to come and don’t stress.

Pleasance · 21/06/2019 19:20

Thank you! I'll take a look and let you know. Hadn't remembered some of the good stuff in TKMaxx either.

It's Edinburgh University, to those that asked for more information. I think I would want to be smart though, regardless of which uni.

When I graduated from my PG qualification, at the same age as you, I wore navy trousers and shirt with a Zara/Chanel homage jacket. I don't think you should go far outside your comfort zone unless you live in a Tesco uniform or trackies. A scrubbed and polished version of you smiling from ear to ear with pride would do beautifully.

Pleasance · 22/06/2019 10:28

Love the long TKMaxx dress, but no sure if it is summery enough? I'm not keen on the shape of the second. Shoes are definitely too high for me...especially on Edinburgh cobbles! 😂

The jumpsuit is an interesting thought, though that one isn't in my size. I wonder how 'lilac' it is, that feels a bit scary, whereas it looks more of a blush pink in the photo.

Might have a look through my own 'stuff' though I wear 'smart' for work and don't want to wear any of those outfits. Suppose I wanted a treat!

Ah that's a shame it's not available in your size! I was sure it said there were size 8s available yesterday! Oh well. There are a few colours in the same jumpsuit on the JL website though, if you like it.

I used to live in Edinburgh, in the New Town / Stockbridge area. You are correct. It is a stiletto no go zone 😂.

Fatkins · 22/06/2019 11:11

It isn't just the cobbles, it's all the hills! Going up in high heels is ok, but walking down is hellish.

What colour is your hood? Was at DDs graduation this week (Dundee so similar climate but flatter) . DD had bought a gorgeous cobalt blue body con dress but had a wobble reading the dress code so wore it black instead. She'd have been fine. It meant she could wear a lovely duster coat in nude after she handed her robes back in.

Graduates were still fairly formal with some amazing national dress/ cultural outfits.

What age are you?

The OP is attending her child's graduation, as for as I understood? I am the nutter who will meticulously give people false hope about heels and cobbles, so definitely ignore me on those! I suspect a 3/4 long sleeve would look particularly elegant: TK Maxx got some Ted Baker in yesterday online, so maybe something there for you? Also a lot of Reiss on eBay at the moment too. I'd recommend some more items, but I only wear blue and I think that's not the most summery? Let us know what you end up with, and most importantly - enjoy the day!

Lidlfix · 22/06/2019 15:23

Oops she is indeed. I (like to think that I am very young to have had a DC graduate) also have a fear of frumpy MOB outfits or going floaty and looking like a lady of a certain vintage on a cruise. I am 45.

What about this? With wedges and a cardigan that pics out one of the colours?

Lidlfix · 22/06/2019 15:24

With the pic Blush

lidfix you get me! Love your descriptions about MOB or lady on a cruise!

Heads back to TKMAXX...

Oh, yes forgot....early 50's ( yep a shock to me too!) ...but going on 20 (wishful thinking!).

Do try and stay fashionable without looking ridiculous ( I hope!).
