Wavy hair, curly girl and frizz halo; what can I do?

I have wavy/curly hair and recently have been following Curly Girl principles although I don't co-wash as my head is itchy and greasy if I don't shampoo it. I wash my hair about once/twice a week. In the attached pic I had used leave-in conditioner and left to dry naturally. This is day 3. My hair looks acceptable on day 1 but by day 2 I have a halo of frizz all over but especially at the roots. I have a lot of new growth and wiry, almost pube-like white hairs in my hairline around my forehead.

Is there any product that can help this? I struggle to blow dry my own hair (especially these short new hairs) but when I get it done at the hairdresser it stays smooth and frizz-free for days. Thanks!

Percy and Reed Wonder Balm is curly girl friendly and good for second day hair.

Hair Mousse definitely helps mine stay less fuzzy, especially for a few days after I wash it. Put it on when you’re hairs wet after a shower. At the minute I’m using the wella shockwaves for curls & waves, though there are others with a stronger hold.

Do you have a diffuser for your hair dryer? Can’t dry my hair without it! Let’s it dry in curls without blowing it all over the place.

Also with mousse I can just wet my hair a bit the day after washing and it ‘reactivates’ yesterday’s mousse 👍

Google or YouTube has a host of information. Just type in frizzy hair and see what happens. No thank you necessary mam Smile

Shea moisture curl jelly. It makes my hair frizz if I use it when wet but it is brilliant on dry hair for sticking curls together www.sheamoisture.com/coconut-and-hibiscus-curling-gel-souffli/764302290315.html

You can get it in boots and superdrug

Using a styling product rather than just conditioner will help. I would suggest a gel or custard (Umberto Giannini curl jelly or cantu custard are decent basics; Boucleme, Only Curls and Jessicurl gels are all great but expensive).

But I have to be honest, if you are still shampooing and getting blow dries then you're not following cgm. It's an all or nothing thing really and committing to the method will bring much better results than any product. It's not a quick fix and there will be a transition period whilst your hair and scalp adjust, but the change in the long run is dramatic.

I started off with waves very similar to yours. I'm 18 months in now and have developed ringlets which are semi-regularly complimented by strangers on the street.

I use a proper cowash rather than just using conditioner. The As I Am coconut cowash is brilliant, or the above high end brands all do a curl cleanser which you can use instead of shampoo. Either way, I'd definitely recommend ditching the sulphates if you want to see real results.

I have very curly hair and wash my hair every other day. Any more than that and it looks frizzy and dry.

Maybe a silk or satin pillow? It’s meant to stop your hair getting messy as you sleep as it doesn’t pull.

ChristineBaskets · 23/06/2019 09:34

Thanks for all your advice Smile

I have a silk pillow. I'm wondering whether a hair net might help at night?

I have tried curly girl properly before, without shampooing etc, and my hair was itchy and unbearable so I stopped. The shampoos I use don't contain sulphates and are cg friendly. I don't blow dry my hair apart from occasional diffusing, I was trying to explain that if the hairdresser blow dries it (when I wasn't doing cg) it stays lovely and smooth, but I can't blow dry it straight myself even if I try when I'm not doing cg.

I will get one of the styling products recommended thank you, I particularly like the sound of the mousse. When I did cg before I bought loads of stuff that didn't work/suit me including the fabled Boots pink creme and other stuff that made my hair crispy. It's an expensive game of trial and error isn't it.

I also love Boucleme and Jessicurl - have never gone full curly girl and use the shampoo/cleanser from their ranges and it suits me fine. They both also have lovely styling products for ringletly curls.

But I never ever blowdry - either leave it to dry naturally or diffuse it.

Blowdrying is just going to cause frizz.

My hair is similar to yours and I have tried everything from the cheap to the ridiculously expensive! The only thing that truly work and has been successful is Paul Mitchell twirl around. It's a bit pricey at £22 but you only use a bit so it does last and you can use it on wet or dry hair, I've tried to go back to cheaper products but non come close.

raisinsraisins · 23/06/2019 16:47

ChristineBaskets, it’s fine for your hair to go crispy. When it’s dry you can then scrunch the curls with your hands “scrunch out the crunch” and it then looks lovely.

Have you looked into a Brazilian/keratin blow dry?
