Help me crack this! Aluminium free deodorant

I've recently decided to go aluminium free with my deodorant. I tried using Bionsen for the first time today, having read good reviews. The scent is lovely but very quickly after putting it on I felt I was already starting to smell. I don't sweat excessively so I'm hoping I can crack this by trying some others or maybe making my own. Anyone successfully made the switch?

I've been using nuud and really like it. Prior to that I'd use the really strong sure stick deodorant daily and still feel sticky, with Nuud I find some days I use it daily then other times I can go 3-4 days without feeling the need to use it.
It isn't cheap but lasts ages, I'd recommend it to anyone

I’d like to know this too! I’ve tried one from a local eco type shop, smells lovely but doesn’t stand up to much sweating. Then a Mum roll on, again not great. Then a pink clay solid one from Sarah’s Soapery, this one does seem to work but a bit sticky. I’ve also got a Lush one which also seems to be working quite well. When I feel like giving up I remind myself that I did still get a bit whiffy even with the likes of Sure!

Veterinari · 18/06/2019 21:59

Sanex

BringItIn · 18/06/2019 22:19

I use Bionsen and it works ok but not when I am really sweaty or hot. I did hear sweat smells are mostly caused by bacteria and vigorously rubbing your underarms in the shower for a minute or so to really remove all bacteria can make a big difference. I haven't tried it yet though!

bordellosboheme · 18/06/2019 22:20

Weleda Rose spray deodorant. No nasties and effective.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 18/06/2019 22:22

I'm currently using the Dove one and it's a bit rubbish really!

BuildingQuote · 18/06/2019 22:27

A friend told me about Salt of the Earth sprays (Holland and Barrett have them and Amazon ) and our 12 year old and I haven’t looked back.
It’s the only natural deodorant I’ve found that is so reliable I feel safe with it even on a stressful day! Dd loves is too

DC3dilemma · 18/06/2019 22:34

Native is good.

The thing about going aluminium free is that nothing will work as well at first. It takes time to re-regulate after using aluminium for years. When I first started using non-alu, I occasionally returned to an alu one for extra sweaty days (!) but soon realised that takes you back to starting over again. After a few weeks alu free, your non-alu one will work much better. BUT, wash with soap (not shower gel) and put your deodorant on when you’ve dried and cooled down. Even if just going to bed after a shower -don’t leave it till morning.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 18/06/2019 22:45

Why soap and not shower gel?

Plumpciousness · 18/06/2019 22:53

Shower gel leaves residue and that can include some of the bacteria that causes sweat odour. Soap washes off better.

bumpertobumper · 18/06/2019 22:56

Toms of Maine I find very good. I use the unscented stick version. Don't sweat much and don't smell at all

Plumpciousness · 18/06/2019 22:59

I've never found anything better than Tom's of Maine unscented stick. Unfortunately it hasn't been available in the UK or EU for a few years now so I buy it online from the US.

I've recently tried Jason unscented stick. It's quite good but doesn't last as long as Tom's of Maine so I'm just using it on low activity days or overnight after a shower.

A friend has started to use Weleda and says it's good.

mrssmiling · 19/06/2019 08:46

Another vote for Weleda Rose...I've been using it for about eight years. Not cheap, but it is often on offer - usually pay around £9.
It's lovely to use, lasts a long time and works really well, except in very hot weather, when I use Bionsen.

Chipsahoy · 19/06/2019 08:51

I have always had to use Mitchum stick or I smell of no by the end of the day but really wanted to go aluminium free. I tried loads, only one that had worked and I never ever smell with is activated charcoal. A little fiddly to apply at first but you soon get used to it.

We use Tropic Skincare deodorant it works brilliantly and smells good, not too overpowering.
But I second that you and your body take a while to adjust to the change of non alu.

Brittanyspears · 19/06/2019 09:11

Sanex and Tropic contain aluminium!
Nuxe is good, and the sprays people have mentioned. Lush do hard blocks that id also recommend.

thedevilinablackdress · 19/06/2019 09:58

Lush Aromaco works for me.
There will be some adjustment, particularly if you've been using an anti-persperant.

Veterinari · 24/06/2019 11:57

@Brittanyspears Hmm

Wash your armpits thoroughly with soap (not beauty bars like Dove) twice a day. Then cut a slice of lemon. Rub it on one armpit, flip it over and rub on the other armpit.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/06/2019 16:45

Another vote for Nuud

silverstream · 24/06/2019 17:58

Dr Organics from Holland and Barrett. The Rose One is my favourite.

Mrs9C · 24/06/2019 19:24

i've tried almost everything on this thread, and none worked longer than 2 months. Find it very disappointing and frustrating, as some of them cost £10+ Currently using Topic, which isn't aluminium free, but is contained in such a way it rubs off the skin? Can't quite remember how it was put when I asked about it, but it's been working for me for 4 months, which is a record!

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/06/2019 20:00

Why go aluminium free?.

XingMing · 24/06/2019 21:05

I hate to sound unhygienic. but I haven't routinely used deodorant for several years. And DH who's a sensitive flower and tells me straight out if my breath smells, has never commented negatively on BO. There is a Dutch university study (Utrecht?) that suggests it's all down to having a benign potpourri mix of bacteria versus an adverse monoculture. The Times had an article about it a few weeks ago.

XingMing · 24/06/2019 21:07

I do shower daily, and change clothes regularly, but I don't seem to smell bad, even after vigorous exercise.
