Hi, Ive just started curly hair method so would like to ask to share your experiences who already been doing it for longer time :) Have you got any before and after pics to share? I.e. Ive started it because my hairdresses ruined my curls by bleaching it and they became half straight, frizzy mess! My hair is now half the lenght it was before the bleaching becauae they simply just broke off and fell off :( I hope CG will help to restore it somehow.

I've been doing Curly Girl for about 18 months now and I love it! It's a real trial and error process though because what works for one person might not necessarily work for someone else.

What products are you using now? This is what works for me:

-Clarify with a cheapo shampoo from Aldi every few weeks
-Wash hair with Shea Moisture black castor oil shampoo
-Condition with Shea Moisture conditioner
-Get out of the shower, turn head upside down and squish wet hair with fingers until curl clumps start to form
-Mix cantu curl cream and cantu curl custard together and squish into (still upside down) hair. Keep squishing to squeeze the product into hair.
-Use a microfibre towel to squish some more, then plop hair in a long sleeved t shirt for an hour before leaving to dry naturally or diffusing on a low heat and low power.
-Squish in gel to hold.

Also I really recommend a good deep conditioning treatment once a week to help your curls to be healthy. It's taken a long time, but my hair feels healthy and soft now, instead of a frazzled mess.

There are loads of curly hair people on Instagram who post tips and videos that are really helpful. My favourite is hif3licia ; I've learned so much from her channel.

Good luck!

I don't have before and after pics but I've been doing it for 9 months and my hair has never looked better. I don't wash it every day - twice a week max - and it keeps the curl for much longer with no frizz. If it goes dry I dampen it and run some conditioner through it as a refresh. I also find it's become far easier to detangle now, in the last two months or so.

I am using Boucléme stuff - it's not cheap, but it's working out cheaper than smothering my head in serums and shea butter. Curl cleanser to clean, then condition and detangle, rinse, more conditioner run through, leave in, squeeze excess water out with microfibre towel, run gel through, add root clips (a pain but necessary for me), let dry naturally, take out clips, scrunch out the crisp gel. This is what works for me but everyone has a slightly different routine and products; it takes a bit of time and trial and error (and curly hair hairdresser advice in my case) to find the exact right one for you.

So I did it for about two years and gave up I look back on the photos and I always looked scruffy. I do think it’s good to give your hair a rest but it’s not really practical

IhaveALooBrush · 16/06/2019 20:42

I've been doing it for about 6 months and my hair looks shite.
The frizz refuses to go on the outer layers but underneath its lack lustre.
If I use a diffuser I look like Edward scissorhands.
My hair is really fine and I haven't found anything that isn't too heavy.
Since starting the curly girl method my spiral ringlets curls have gone anyway. I now have frizzy meh waves and its very flat on top.

I've been using the curly girl method method for the last 12 months and can really see a difference. I'm always buying new products but at the moment I'm using Superdrug extracts conditioner to co wash, Shea butter black caster oil deep conditioner then the Shea butter back caster oil leave in. I wrap in a micro fibre towel then use eco olive oil gel and Pantene no 5 mousse. It sounds complicated but after years of straightening I'm liberated leaving it curly . Some before and after pics ( not very good but you'll see the blonder pic is when I stated). I'm also going to Vicki queen of curls to get it cut- she's amazing Smileplease persevere Smile

Thanks for sharing x

The girls that said it didnt work - did you make sure to include protein treatments in your hair routines? As it turns out, good protein treatments are as important as moisturising coditioners etc. If there is a lack of protein in your hair - it will make hair frizzy...

JustMe9 - I’m not saying it didn’t work, it just looked shit like I was some old ageing witchey looking hippy, I work in a corporate environment, I go to the gym every day I just couldn’t manage hair that took 4 hours to dry and left me looking like Stevie nicks much as I love her

Ouryve · 16/06/2019 21:10

I'm still in the early stages of experimenting with it, but my hair is so much softer and wavier.

Getting the amount of gel right is a learning process, mind :o

I've done it on/off for 6 years, started off using the book and moved on the many FB groups for advice.

Like anything it can be very dictatorial (thou shalt not shampoo your hair etc). The last run of it left my hair looking and feeling like shite; lots broken off too. Turns out my hair hates protein and coconut (which mimics protein). So you need to work out your porosity. Its taken months for it to look reasonable again.

Also, its great if you can find a CGM hairdresser. A good one is worth their weight in gold.

bonbonours · 17/06/2019 09:23

I do a very basic version of it with my daughters hair and mine. Basically wash with conditioner, don't brush ever, only comb through when wet with even more conditioner. I use body shop coconut hair oil on mine, and usually nothing on my daughter's but both our hair looks much better than when we used to brush it.
I don't do all the wrap in a Tshirt nonsense just a microfibre towel wrap then leave to dry naturally.

SleepForTheWeak · 23/06/2019 19:19

I've been doing it for about 5/6 weeks now. My hair is more wavy than curly though. The first couple washes my hair looked great but now it looks all dry, frizzy and messy.

Going to try different products - think my hair is rebelling against coconut and/or Shea

AccioCoffee · 23/06/2019 19:29

What do yous do in the mornings to revive each day in between washes and what combs do you use.

I'm struggling with my dd hair and don't know how to make the most of her curls

bonbonours · 23/06/2019 20:07

To be honest I just tie my hair up if I'm not washing it I think it only works when I at least wet it.

I use a wide afro comb when combing in the shower with conditioner.

The downside so far is that my daughter's long hair gets very tangled because I don't brush or comb it in between washes, and only wash it a couple of times a week. So when I do wash it, it takes quite a while to comb through the tangles. My own doesn't seem to get so tangled but then like I say I tie it up a lot.

Tilikum · 23/06/2019 20:16

In the morning I spray with a mix of water and lavendar oil, then diffuse it for 1 minute upside down, sometimes with mousse, to bring it back to life.

At night I tie it up with a claw clip on top of my head (bobbles leave a dint in your hair and mess up the curl pattern). Some people sleep in silk bonnets to protect their hair but I had elastic creases on my face until mid afternoon when I tried that, and it's hard to explain what the marks on my face were when people asked without sounding like a weirdo...
