I have looked everywhere.

I like Boden. Their Richmond trousers are great.

Sooverthemill · 16/06/2019 07:39

Hope, pure collection, baujken, jd williams all online.

I suggest you look at the 40+/50+ Instagram people for ideas. There is a lot of stuff out there you just need a few ideas to start

Sooverthemill · 16/06/2019 07:40

Yes Boden are also great ( I pick through the bright and quirky prints for classic stuff)

Hellywelly10 · 16/06/2019 07:43

Peter hahn has some lovely bits op.

M1Mountain · 16/06/2019 07:46

Do you have a brwnch of John Lewis near you? Their personal shopper service is excellent and free.

ImogenTubbs · 16/06/2019 07:49

I'm not usually a big fan, but they have some nice things in Laura Ashley this year. Well cut linen dresses that fall just below the knee and cropped chinos in lovely summery colours. I could have bought about five pairs!

Hollowvictory · 16/06/2019 07:50

I agree that the boden Richmond trousers and shorts are really good

BikeRunSki · 16/06/2019 07:54

Boden
Seasalt on the High Street- although I find the trouser legs are it is possible to dress like a toddler from there
I’ve had a lot a decent stuff from Sainsbury’s too recently.

ShanghaiDiva · 16/06/2019 07:55

Uniqlo?

SpeckledyHen · 16/06/2019 08:05

John Lewis on line website is great to use - easy filtering and huge choice of brands at all price points . Also recommend a personal shopping session there .

mrssmiling · 16/06/2019 08:12

Another vote for John Lewis. If you need beach stuff, Boden swimwear is pretty good, and Monsoon Beachwear is worth a look.
Jigsaw is generally over budget for me, but the sale is on with lots at 50% off...lots of well cut trousers.

UnderPompeii · 16/06/2019 08:28

I quite like Wallis. Ambrose Wilson online has some decent stuff if you trawl through.

MaudesMum · 16/06/2019 08:49

I am a size 16 50-something and our tastes sound similar. If you can get to an Uniqlo, even just once, it's really good for basics - it's filled the gaps in my wardrobe where M&S used to sit. And, once you've worked out your size with them, their website and online ordering is really good. I'd also agree that Boden is worth a shot, especially if you bide your time and wait for one of their many sales. Cos, if you can work your way through the madder items, - their stuff lasts really well. I also wouldn't discount a good rummage through TK Maxx, as they often have clothes from brands like Jaeger and Paul Costello.

teta · 16/06/2019 09:02

I am similarly sized. I like Monsoon clothes in the summer, M&S for wide cropped linen trousers and Jigsaw for culottes/ wide crops and dresses. Basics I buy at H&M like linen t shirts and Pima cotton Pjs. Wrap/poetry in the sales - love the linen sweaters. Also occasional bits from Brand Alley like some Hush items and some Jigsaw jackets. Also Tk Maxx for brands I like - Vionic and Nydj.

TheCanterburyWhales · 16/06/2019 09:07

Agree with Boden for trousers.
Also as pp suggests, I go through the JL app, and search brands and items. Stick it in a wishlist and wait for the sales.
Hobbs, Jigsaw etc have some nice tops which IMO, once you've scored a bit of discount/sales are good value for money.
Mint Velvet and Hush have stuff which looks nice online, but the quality is pants for the price.
Without wanting to sound like my Mum, I've picked up tops from both Betty Barclay (JL) and Jaeger that I've been complimented on.
I'm a 14 top these days.

TheCanterburyWhales · 16/06/2019 09:08

And the H&M linen t shirts this season are the bollocks. Fabulous.

Asitgoes · 16/06/2019 10:41

Whilst her style (& life) are very different to mine, I think the Midlife Chic blogger is very good at analysing trends and editing collections. She mostly cover John Lewis, Boden type brands but also showcases smaller brands, with an emphasis on sustainability, quality and those run by midlife women.

Hotterthanahotthing · 16/06/2019 10:44

White Stuff has some nice unfussy dresses short and midi.

BikeRunSki · 16/06/2019 10:48

BAM t shirts are extremely good. I have a very long back and their “Infinity” tees actually cover my waist and then some! I have bought 3 in different colours for the last 3 years, and the originals are still going strong. I also like the knickers, PJs and socks. The socks are not that hardwearing, but are lovely, and seem to kept my feet cool or warm as required.

grownup2 · 16/06/2019 12:42

I'm also 14+ size in my fifties and find myself living in BAM bamboo casual tops. Their range isn't huge but cleverly and generously cut, superbly comfy on the skin and washes really well.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 16/06/2019 13:03

Honestly OP I’m very curious about this ‘everyehere’ that you’ve looked for decent clothes. What is the difficulty, exactly? 14+ is a completely average size. And no one has to look for a separate category of clothes because they are over 50.

I’m hoping that by ‘mail order’ you mean ‘online’? (Rather than an old style paper catalogue dropping through your door?) So you have unlimited choice.

Can you say what sort of prices you’re happy to pay? If you are not a completely regular size and shape then very cheap clothes will never be very flattering - but I know people who swear by Sainsbury’s t shirts ...

But Toast would supply you with all you need. You may want to avoid some of the more garish patterns. And the dresses are sometimes odd. But they can’t be bettered for good, simple t shirts, shirts, trousers.

If you have a lot more money then Margaret Howell could be perfect.

These can both be bought online if you can’t get to one of their shops.

(By the way, my experience of trips to the US is that it’s better to take very little and shop there to wear there.)

BikeRunSki · 16/06/2019 13:08

Toast is great unless you have a long back, in which case the tops are all too short, the dress waists are under your boobs and the trouser/jeans waists barely cover your bum. I’m not that tall, the overall length is fine on dresses and trousers, but the proportions are all wrong on me.

Sparklypen · 16/06/2019 13:45

I find phase 8 good. V ordinary looking on the hanger, very flattering on.
White stuff
Crew.

Pullyers · 16/06/2019 13:48

Nomads. Brilliant.
