What to buy with a (small) inheritance?

My father died recently, and left me approx £600. I want to buy something lovely that will remind me of him and make me smile when I wear/use it. While alive, he never bought me jewellery, so I did think maybe a dress ring or some earrings, but maybe a classic bag would get more use?
What would you buy? Or any other suggestions?
Thanks.

A lovely silver/gold statement necklace?

happytobemrsg · 13/06/2019 15:07

I would 100% get jewellery. A bag shows wear & tear but jewellery, I find, last longer.

Thanks Single, I wouldn't know where to start looking - any links?

Next poster (sorry can't see your name, phone playing up) yes you're prob right that jewellery makes more sense

I think a watch, because you will look at it several times through the day and you'll think of him. And maybe a nice piece of artwork for your wall?

baublegirl454 · 13/06/2019 15:12

Ooh yes a watch is a good idea! I like that.

I would buy jewellery. As another poster said, a bag would eventually show wear and tear whereas jewellery will last a lifetime. I’d get mine from either Georg Jensen or Marianne Dulong (my favourites, both Danish brands).

Alternatively, if you go into an independent jeweller and look at vintage or preloved pieces your money would go much further.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 13/06/2019 15:15

I would probably buy a piece of art or an original print to put on the wall. I'd get more pleasure out of that but I'm not really a watch/jewellery/bag type of person.

Ninkaninus · 13/06/2019 15:15

Oh yes a lovely watch (or two!) would be nice too. I’d look at citizen.

tadpole39 · 13/06/2019 15:16

I bought a large picture of sunflowers, my mums favourite flower. It’s in the loung and I always think of it as mums picture.

happytobemrsg · 13/06/2019 15:20

Oh yes a lovely watch is a great idea!

I know someone who bought a National Trust life membership with some money they inherited and they think of their family member every time they use it. Could that (or similar) be an option?

Alternatively I'd probably go for art or jewellery.

LaMarschallin · 13/06/2019 15:31

In similar circs I bought a watch, which gives me great pleasure. I already had my main "good" watch, so got an evening watch (sort of bangle style).
Now I'd get diamond earrings.

I'm very sorry for your loss, but it will be lovely to have something to remember him by.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 13/06/2019 15:31

My grandad left me a similar amount when he died. I bought a vintage gold Omega dress watch. It is a lovely, classic piece, and always makes me smile and think of him when I wear it.

Ninkaninus · 13/06/2019 15:34

Flowers I’m sorry for your loss. Should have said that to begin with.

A vintage watch is a lovely idea.

BlueMerchant · 13/06/2019 15:35

I'd choose a timeless, classic, simple pendant or bracelet and maybe spend time choosing a beautiful perfume that could become a signature and remind you off of him each time you buy and wear it thereafter.

statetrooperstacey · 13/06/2019 15:37

Jewellery or a watch are both good ideas. But I prefer the art work or a print I think. How about a garden sculpture or a tree?

baublegirl454 · 13/06/2019 15:45

Thanks everyone, there are some great ideas here that I would not have thought of. Artwork is a great one, he lived by the sea so maybe a nice local print. And I think a watch or jewellery are definitely better than a bag. I love the NT idea too. We were members but couldn't afford to keep it up so I might look into that again. Thank you 😊

Something timeless.
Diamond studs?

user1486131602 · 13/06/2019 15:57

Why not look for those things at vintage market! Unique pieces, less costly and things of quality too!

Popuppippa · 13/06/2019 17:38

I would buy an Elsa Peretti ring from Tiffany and always wear it.
