What style rules do you go by??

For example, I was reading a thread the other day about what coverup to wear with a tea dress. Quite a few posters said you should balance a feminine dress with a more masculine leather jacket to stop it looking too twee. I hadn’t thought about that before but now I get it.

I don’t have any rules but looking for more inspiration here!

Apart from on the beach wear nothing that is wider than it is long.

SallieSallow · 14/06/2019 20:38

No slogans for me either, I don’t want people reading my chest Grin

I’ve not had my colours done but think I’ve got pale yellow skin so it’s obvious immediately if a colour doesn’t suit me as I look sallow/jaundiced/ill.

Ellapaella · 14/06/2019 20:39

The only rule I have is to only wear something that makes me feel good and that I think suits me rather than just wearing something because it's in fashion or because alleged 'fashion wise' people say it is.
Also totally agree with the poster who mentioned skin tone.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2019 20:41

I'd love to get my colours done. Previously I would never wear pink/dusky pink or black because they literally sucked the life out of my face. Now though I love them and they suit me! Can your colours change with age?

Whyknot · 14/06/2019 20:51

Lots of the above, but also if it has belt loops then must wear a belt, I really hate empty belt loops.

Tights only between beginning of Oct and end of March. I have no idea where this self inflicted rule came from, but I just can't break it! As the weather has been crap so far this year, I've had to live in trousers 🙄.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/06/2019 20:51

Not rules as such, but I am conscious of my narrowest point (waist) and widest point (arse) so wear things that hit at the right length - I look best in tucked in or slightly cropped tops. (I mean sitting on the waist, not flashing my tummy.)

Also, if you try something on and don’t feel better in it than what you were wearing when you walked into the fitting room, don’t buy it. With the exception of “basics” like a plain black polo neck, I only buy things that I truly love and feel amazing in.

Mythreefavouritethings · 14/06/2019 20:59

Pencil skirt, quite high-waisted with a bit of stretch. Absolute go to and can be dressed up or down. And a bit of colour with a gypsy-style black top (have a lovely green skirt in a weird stiff material that flares out). And boots/ballet pumps/heels. Some lovely ideas here, might steal!

PickAChew · 14/06/2019 21:03

Don't mix red trackies with turquoise trainers and a green quilted jacket.

Unlike the guy who walked past my window, earlier :o

happytobemrsg · 14/06/2019 21:05

I never mix navy & black

Always fold my trouser cuffs if I’m wear jeans with trainers

Just because it fits, doesn’t mean it looks good.

nevernotstruggling · 14/06/2019 21:13

Mine are;

I'm too old for new look.

Never wear heels with a hood (jumper or jacket looks really mumsy)

Never show a knicker line.

happytobemrsg · 14/06/2019 21:20

That’s great news Beef, now I don’t have to feel bad about never having matching underwear!

Oh yes Sallie I’ve bought too many shoes which hurt so I never wear them. Comfort is key. I now know my narrow but long feet must have laces (trainers/brogues), good straps (sandals) or be boots to stay on my feet. I also look ridiculous walking in heels so I’ve given up. Luckily I’m 5f 6in so heels are not a must.

Oh I really like black and navy together - if they're the right tones I think it looks great.

Chelsea26 · 14/06/2019 22:13

Dress for the figure you’ve got, not the figure you want.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/06/2019 23:01

I'm just watching Madonna walk on stage on Graham Norton. Clearly she doesn't read S&B and missed the memo about not getting boobs and legs out at the same time. There's getting your boobs out and well, there's Madonna's outfit tonight. Shock

Gwenhwyfar · 14/06/2019 23:35

"Oh I really like black and navy together - if they're the right tones I think it looks great."

I suppose many of us do it with navy jeans.

Goodideaatthetime007 · 14/06/2019 23:42

No double denim (easy as I only have denim jeans)

No double leopard print (harder - I have a lot of leopard print).

If in doubt about what to wear at any social event I err on the side of underdressed. I dread looking like I’ve tried too hard.

Wincarnis · 15/06/2019 02:25

Only buy black socks then you always have a pair

Less is more (too much jewelry, scarves etc start to look a mess)

No linen (always looks a mess)

Monty27 · 15/06/2019 04:52

Too tired to read so marking my place Smile

DramaRamaLlama · 15/06/2019 09:49

I actually find navy jeans really hard to style and probably wouldn't wear a black top with navy jeans.

I've got a beautiful black and navy self portrait dress and a Marc O'Polo top that is navy with a black frill

Gwenhwyfar · 15/06/2019 09:59

"Only buy black socks then you always have a pair"

I do this, although some of the black socks fade to grey and some fade to a kind of navy so they're not all exactly the same colour.

Also, most of my bras and knickers are black so match in colour at least.

I actually didn't realise that some women routinely wore matching underwear until on MN - I thought it was a thing for hot dates or special occasions.

MohairMenace · 15/06/2019 10:00

I ask myself ‘what would Iris Apfel do?’

DogHasEatenTheSqueaker · 15/06/2019 10:24

Ignore the label size, try on until you find something that fits and accept that some days you’re in a size 8, some days you’re in an 18. (Looking at you H&M Hmm)

nevernotstruggling · 15/06/2019 11:26

Throw out anything that makes you feel rubbish.

DramaRamaLlama · 15/06/2019 13:08

Yes! That's totally underrated advice. I think we're all guilty of hanging on to stuff that never worked/no longer works. As I've got older I've got much better at saying "this now looks a bit shit" and binning it
