glycolic acid cleansing pads

Hello
Hoping someone could help with expert advice!
I bought some superdrug glycolic acid cleansing pads after reading so many positive reviews on MN.
I have blemish prone skin that is increasingly looking dull
Also suffer from hyper pigmentation but the dermatologist recommends I leave it alone :-(

On reading the instructions on the box, they seem to recommend it to be used on cleansed face
What do people normally use before using the pads?
Any recommendations will be super helpful.
I use no make up so any tips to make the skin brighter and even would be very much appreciated.

Thanks very much
Xx

I use Johnson’s blue make up wipes to take my make up off and then use the Superdrug glycolic pads after that. I then wash my face with Nivea face wash to take residue off. I find that works really well for me. I use them most days even though it says once a week, my skin is quite oily but I’m getting on a bit (nearly 40) and it seems to keep my skin brighter.

I have no expert medical advice but I would say if you are seeing a dermatologist please listen to them - I know my mum was told that she shouldn't use any chemical peels for her melasma as it could make it worse, she was prescribed something else. I would definitely talk to your dermatologist before using those glycolic acid pads.

Thanks Fairylea!
So a cleanser before the pads then!!
I missed the point about using it once a week.
Should read again!!
I had oily skin and hence the acne and the big pores but in my mid forties now and skin is less oily but also dull...no winning!!!

Hopefully I get some result with this

Cleanse your skin with something first, think of the pads more like a toner to be used before your moisturiser or oil etc.
I have blemish prone skin too and I use a cleansing balm to take off makeup (switch between eve lom, Clinique take the day off) and then use another cleanser to actually cleanse, something that's more gel/liquid based. I then use an acid (pixi glow or an aha serum) and then a facial oil (no cream moisturiser).

Thank you for the advice on sticking to dermatologist advice!!
Vanity does make one a bit foolish sometimes!!!
I wear no make up and strictly look for non comedogenic products.
She recommended I use neutrogena (orange face wash), neutrogena moisturiser and a high SPF. I have been using la Roche Posay 50.

I own no make up and do very little to myself. Got carried away with all the success stories on MN.
I bought myself the smallest box of glycolic acid pads thinking don't want to waste it doesn't suit!!!

I would start on once a week and see how you go, upping every couple of weeks. I use acid every other day now and when I'm consistent I get great results.

I love them. I cleanse first, and then use. My skin suffers if I haven't used them for a week or so

Haworthia · 10/06/2019 22:19

Use them on freshly cleansed skin. Then swipe the glycolic pad over face like you would a toner. Then either go to bed or follow up with a moisturiser.

Fairylea - if you wash your face after using the glycolic then you’re just washing it straight off the skin. You may as well not use them in the first place. If I were you I’d use the Johnsons wipe (although they’re so environmentally unfriendly I’d recommend you ditch them), then wash your face to remove whatever the wipe failed to remove, then the glycolic pad.

Also, only once a week? I doubt they’re particularly strong so you can definitely use them more often than that! I use Pixi glow tonic (5% glycolic) once, sometimes twice, a day.

Caroline Hirons has loads of great tips about acid toning on her website.

I use GA toner after double cleansing ( first cleanse to remove makeup then second time to actually cleanse face) Just make sure you are only using them PM not AM!

Lamentations · 11/06/2019 15:20

Agree not to wash the acid off your face. Do cleanse before though.

Fairylea · 11/06/2019 16:51

I’m not sure it’s a waste of time washing the acid off ... I can definitely feel it burning when I use them so it’s doing something! I wouldn’t want to leave that on my face afterwards. I think it’s best to experiment and find whatever works best for you.

Haworthia · 11/06/2019 17:13

They’re designed to be left on the skin, and yes, a tingle is normal. Acid toners work by dissolving the bonds between the old skin cells on the surface, revealing the newer cells underneath. Washing it straight off is pointless, trust me Smile
