Can someone please help me with Curly Girl Method products?

I really want to start the curly girl method but I am so overwhelmed with all the information online between websites, Reddit, Facebook groups etc. that I have no idea where to start.

I just want a VERY simple run down of the steps with a product alongside each one which I can use. Preferably stuff I can buy in Boots or Body Shop or something rather than online.

I know there are tonnes of products you can use and it can be a trial and error process, but as a starter for 10 can anyone help me make sense of this by sharing what they use for each step?

Sure Smile
Do a final wash - any shampoo without silicones will work so check what you already have
Co wash and conditioner you can use the same product or different. Some safe ones are Wilkos happy hair, ultimate blends almond crush or Superdrug extracts
You can leave some conditioner in, or wash it all out, it's trial and error
You can also use a gel or mousse, Pantene number 3 or 5 (both say curls on) are safe
Eco gels are all safe
Let your hair dry totally before touching. If it's crunchy then gently scrunch it until it's soft

Hi Op.

I can give advice on what I do, but I don't follow curly girl method 100%.

I make sure to wash with silicon free and sulphate free shampoo and conditioner. (Currently using cocoa butter formula)

Comb out hair with conditioner in shower

Gently press water out of hair with old cotton t-shirt

Apply pure argon oil to ends

Apply curl product (I use Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie)

Part hair where I want it

Twirl strands

Turn head upside down and scrunch

Sometimes I plop curls

Sometimes I dry with diffuser.

Once 70% dry I do not touch

Shake out and scrunch once 100% dry

This is my routine on hair wash days, which is every 3-4 if being lazy. On days off I let the shower steam my hair then apply a tiny bit more product. I also pineapple my hair at night (tie onto pony near forehead) to keep some volume and to prevent from crushing my curls.

I hope this has helped a bit.

Forgot to post my routine!

Wash - Giovanni tea tree
Condition - shea moisture fruit fusion or noughty care taker
Leave in - Giovanni direct leave in (it's v light)
Products - either Jessicurl rockin ringlets and spiralicious or ecoslay orange marmalade

I diffuse then until it's bone dry and leave it overnight, scrunching out the crunchy cast in the morning

If your hair is v dry the garnier banana hair food is good, and the noughty care taker is good for sensitive scalps
Giovanni tea tree foams a little and is v tingly!

Primark micellar conditioner for £1 a tube is good and safe. I've actually find the biggest thing that helps is blotting my hair lightly after a shower, scrunching product in and then leaving well alone to dry. Even if I use anti dandruff shampoo (I cannot live without it) which has SLS in as long as conditioner is silicone free and I do the above it looks fine, which is miles better than how it used to look

I just wanted to add that you should be prepared to try a lot of different conditioners/gels and techniques before you find what works for your hair.

Sainsbury's coconut conditioner is a good one and costs under £1 a bottle. I use the olive oil eco gel, which is about £5 for a big tub. Don't be tempted to head straight for the expensive products.

I’m 2 years curly girl.

Cowash with tresemme undone though this is discontinued. You can use any of the Superdrug extracts conditioners to cowash, they’re all CG friendly.

I then leave in a little garnier hair food.
I comb this through in the shower with a wide tooth comb.
Using a microfibre towel or T-shirt scrunch out excess water.
Rake through a load of shockwaves mousse. Once thoroughly raked I smooth my hair between my hands (called praying hands because you put your hands together as if in prayer and smooth your hair between them.)
Then smooth over gel in the same way.

Scrunch well with hands and then with your microfibre towel gently.

Either air dry or diffuse.

So interested in this - I did try it but found the washing part very hard work

Does it really
Work?

Pooshy · 10/06/2019 21:38

Does it really Work?

Yip! Picture posted in previous post is my current hair after 2 years curly girl. This is my before.

I've not long started this and am doing a simplified version but I'm currently doing:
Shampoo with Johnson's baby head to toe wash
Condition (loads!) With either Tesco extracts (any one - 80p a bottle), Tesco keronics (the green one) Garnier hair food. Leave for a few mins then finger comb through with my head upside down. Have to use a tangle teaser on the knots.

Then rinse that out and apply a decent dollop of any of the above conditioners and finger comb through. While still soaking wet and upside down I put an enormous handful of pantene number 5 mousse through it then scrunch it a bit.

I pile it on top of my head in its clumps and put a shower cap over it, my one has microfibre on the inside. And I leave that for 10 mins or however long I have.

The diffuse dry on a not too high setting, mostly upside down and using my hands as little as possible until the end.

It's loads of steps but I find this way easiest at the moment.
Still have lots of frizz on my top layer but I think that because I need something stronger hold than the mousse.

GinMama1 · 11/06/2019 14:02

It's definitely overwhelming at first and takes a bit of experimenting. It does slightly depend on your exact curls. I use:
Low-poo shampoo (worked better for me) Noughty Wave Hello
Conditioner: Superdrug Extracts (the purple one)
Products: Noughty Wave hello styling cream, Cantu moisturing curl activating cream, Umberto Giani gel.

I don't do anything too complicated, just diffuse until partly dry.

Thanks everyone!! I’ve been to Boots and got the essentials (I think). Going to try stage one tomorrow afternoon. Fingers crossed. Grin
