Tightlining and tubing mascara

Following on from the thread about adapting make-up as you get older, may I ask those in the know about tightlining and tubing mascara?
What exactly are they and how do you do it?

I originally thought tightlining was putting eyeliner on the inner rim of your eyes (like 1970s kohl/kajal, where a black blob used to gather in the inner corners after a while), but I read somewhere else it's not that - it's putting tiny dots of eyeliner inbetween your top (and bottom?) lashes. Which is right, and how do you do it?

Also I thought tubing mascaras were mascaras in a tube (!!) as opposed to the normal cylindrical containers, but that's not right is it? Is it that they coat your lashes in some sort of "tube" effect? Why is it better and how do you know which brands are "tubing" types?

Also how do you stop eyeliner and mascara smudging? I'm not keen on waterproof stuff as it's hard to remove, but my eyelids seem to be a bit greasy (as well as crepey) so everything smudges.

I need a bit of eye definition but it's getting harder as eyelids become older. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I use an Avon glimmerstick for tightlining or Maybelline (as pictured). I only use it on top lashes.

I can't really comment on tubing mascara as when I looked it up on YouTube it made me feel a bit queasy when they took it off. Also I wasn't impressed with how it made their lashes look on any of them.

Tubing mascaras coat your lashes and come off with warm water instead of eye make up remover which means they are more smudge proof

I like Clinique but others on here have said they like the no7 gold packaged one

Or blinc which is the original "tubing" mascara I think.

It can be hard to tell which are tubing mascaras from the packaging, I've bought them by mistake more than once and really don't like them, they are really hard to get off even with hot water.

I use a very fine felt tip eyeliner for tightlining, dot it in between your upper lashes from below (eyes wide open).
