Wardrobe boost- where to shop today?!

I have nothing to weeeeear. Hate getting dressed, having culled all the old things that didn't fit/suit - but not replaced them! Where should I go to sort this out?!

I'm 28, pale, blonde, size 10 with even proportions I'd say. Love wearing dresses because they're easy- no need to coordinate top and bottom. Far too attached to black and blue so trying to move away from those colours, although blue suits me.

Where should I go shopping today? What's good these days? I prefer classic to super trendy but I want to look my age, and feel it, instead of like a weirdly frumpy teenager...

Are you near a John Lewis?

Beachcountrysidetown · 08/06/2019 08:36

I’m 33 and a size 10. I recently culled most of my wardrobe too as I was feeling like a was dressing like a weirdly frumpy teenager too!!
I found building my wardrobe with a couple of good fitting jeans and midi skirts that both can be dressed down with slub T-shirt’s and vests, denim jacket etc but dressed up with blouses, shirts and a blazer. Buy to a colour palette so everything go with each other. Dressed are great too as there’s less to think about as you say and again can be dressed up and down.
Zara, mango, amazingly m&s have some great things this season but you’ll need to go to a flagship store or look online.
White trainers are great for making a look more contemporary and a flat form sandal for evenings. You don’t need a lot of clothes, try to build a seasonal capsule wardrobe. Good luck!!

I'm a fair bit older than you in my early 40s but I'd also recommend Mango. They have quite a lot of natural fabrics in at the moment including some cotton and linen dresses. It's worth having a look on their website too and if you spot something you like it's worth asking a member of staff if they have it in stock as they don't always have everything out on the shop floor.

I am near a John Lewis- 10 mins from Brent Cross and within half an hour of Oxford St but it's murder on a Saturday... I was tempted though!

There's a big M&S at Brent Cross so maybe that'll be my first port of call. Thanks for the suggestions- I'll take a look at Mango and Zara too, although I struggle with online shopping... Always browse forever and buy nothing.

What sort of midi skirts, @Beachcountrysidetown?

I love the pleated ones and there’s loads about - great dressed up and down!

happytobemrsg · 08/06/2019 11:40

If you like the ease of dresses, maybe give jumpsuits a go? They are so comfy. I agree with PP - start with a colour palette so it’s easy to co-ordinate. I’m getting help from a stylist (Styled by Susie) to sort out my ‘colours’ & a seasonal capsule wardrobe. I think she sells pdfs which might help you build a capsule wardrobe

Goosethemoose · 08/06/2019 11:45

I really struggle with jumpsuits: so many women can carry them off but they always do something weird to my lower back/bum area... :(

Mango was a genius suggestion! Tried on ten things immediately and bought 5! Including the loveliest playsuit, although it will need some alterations around the busy slightly. Thanks! And got white canvas trainers in Dune too. Feeling much trendier already

ASOS. They do loads of different brands and budgets. Get the credit card out, order everything, have a massive trying on session at home and return what you don't want and then pay back your credit card.
Zara do good designer copies. I've noticed quite a few Dior derived clothes and a version of the green Gucci suit. They've also got some Chanel inspired things in cardigans and a skirt suit.

Look for stylish people you like then search for their clothes. Example: 'boat neck top' or 'cropped fitted cardigan' and see what comes up.

Great news OP. I could have bought half the shop in there last week, which is very unusual for me!

happytobemrsg · 09/06/2019 15:24

Great news OP! Agree with PP about ASOS - pay £10 & you get free next day delivery for a year so it’s easy to try on bits & just return them

Goosethemoose · 09/06/2019 15:49

Well, having tried the items again in the cold light of day- plus a top from Hobbs - I think I'm generally on the way up but still a while to go... Mango sizing is off around the boobs, mine clearly aren't the shape they expect (although I'd say they're pretty average!).

Very excited about my incoming white trainers. All other tips and tricks gratefully accepted.

I adore And Other Stories for dresses.

happytobemrsg · 09/06/2019 16:11

It sounds silly but getting (& wearing) trainers were a game changer for me. I always liked the look but for some reason I felt to anxious to step out of my comfort zone of ankle boots. Since getting some lovely black/leopard print trainers I’ve ordered more trainers in other colours & branched out to other things too which I loved but didn’t have the courage to wear - jumpsuits, fun hair accessories etc. It’s been really fun!

sleepwhenidie · 10/06/2019 16:33

There are loads of great dresses around, but how casual/formal (work?) do you want?

I am smitten with Kemi Telford skirts at the moment and she does some great dresses too. They somehow look great on everyone (check out Instagram for happy customer pics) and are so easy to dress up or down. kemitelford.com/collections/bottoms

I agree Mango is great and I live in a playsuit during the summer. Zoe Vine has really nice dresses, but I think they are online only. I prefer to try everything on at home instead of traipsing around the high street.
