Remember those dicker boots?

Wondered if anyone still covets or wears the Marant ‘dicker’ ankle boots?
I was thinking about some long since migrated-to-instal fashion blogs I used to read (seems like so looong ago!) and the famous, ‘cursted’ Wardrobe sta-les everyone seemed to be raving about at the time. Anyone recall ‘dead fleurette’? (Lovely, Nordic blogger who now focuses on food).

The usual suspects always made the essentials list:
Trench coat, black dress, blazer, etc. The emphasis was very much Parisienne//fressange, etc
And I have only just realised that although many of the items listed do appear to be ‘timeless’ (trench, etc), whatever happened to the others.

Do you remember the dicker boots?
I have a fairly ravaged pair which still sees sunlight on the odd, summery evening paired with a longish frock. But I’m a bit more dr marten/converse these days on the whole.

But back then, they were regarded as a classic, which is utter rubbish really because I rarely even hear of them now.

Im just a bit bored with a cup of tea here, so humour me:)

Curated - not cursted. Bollox ipad.

Cursted wardrobe staples. Sorry for the grotesque typos.

Still wear mine, I love them.

chasingseagulls · 07/06/2019 07:43

I think classic items exist in the sense that they are always manufactured every season, so the trench coat, blazer, biker jacket, jeans, ballet pumps etc. BUT something about the cut, fabric, shape is always tweaked every reiteration to make it seemingly more current and adapted to whatever the latest shape is (i.e. make is spend money!!). So I don't believe in classic in the sense of buy once last forever despite what lovers of the All Saints biker jackets will tell you on here

chasingseagulls · 07/06/2019 07:46

Sorry re the Dickers, I think it depends who you follow on IG. They are definitely not a current style and shape in terms of high fashion and as such lots of the mum IGers don't feature them because quite simply, they are not style accounts, they are fashion brand accounts with the main aim of selling clothes not featuring outfits for the sake of it. Despite what they tell us.

But Isabel Marant still make them so there must be a market for them.

wiltingflower · 07/06/2019 08:03

I've googled this type of shoe because I'm unfamiliar with 'dicker' boots and the style is actually really familiar to me! I know them as 'western' boots though and I've bought them before in new look and Matalan. I don't think they are that popular where I live but I do see people wear them and I still wear mine 😊

Musicforsnorks · 07/06/2019 11:36

They’re definite;y not as popular with bloggers, but yes, I’ve seen that I.M still sells them. Mine are the taupe ones, a;ways looked so good with slim white jeans. They are xtremely comfy boots. I wish inhad a version of them with a flat heel.

I also wish that I had an old fashioned keyboard for typing on the internet instead of this hideous, predictive text monstrosity.

Why it decides that I want s semi-colon rather than the plain old letter ‘L’ I have no idea.

I remember Dead Fleurette but thought she stopped years ago. Agree that most blogs and insta posts now don't feature things they've had for years because they want to put affiliate links in or are doing paid partnerships with brands around new things they are sent.

I worked for a company that made a similar boot back in about 2011 and I think they'd still be popular now tbh as I see newer versions every year. See also Ash Jalouse.

This is what I was struggling to say, thanks for explaining it so well hammeringinmyhead! I also remember Dead Fleurette, and there were a couple of minimalist very serious capsule wardrobe bloggers I loved, and a lady (cookie something) who now concentrates on photography but wore a lot of Isabel Marant and shopped very conscientiously. I also have to admit I loved WIT when Laura F was still a magazine editor and photographed her genuine outfits.

YesQueen · 08/06/2019 09:56

Still wear mine most weeks! I have a couple of pairs of dip front ankle boots

Mominatrix · 08/06/2019 10:09

I moved on years ago from the Dicker to the Chloe Susannah ankle boots. I retired those last year too for posh trainers (there were too many wannabes around). Dicker still look nice, I just got bored of them.

Musicforsnorks · 08/06/2019 11:34

Agree about instagram.
I kind of miss the blogs, there was actual thought, and writing to digest. Perhaps a tad overly intellectualised but I still loved it.

Dead fleurette became a fan of travel and photographing beautiful mid century architecture and..... burgers. Still seems to love her APC though.

I never got along with APC, fabulous quality but the cuts a bit too boxy/thick for me.

I only got mine 3 years ago after coveting them for a long time so I was quite late to the party in the first place.
The problem I’ve always had with them is that they don’t look very smart in the off black colour that I bought - they always looked a bit knackered from day one. So I do wear them occasionally but they don’t feel smart enough for the evening because of the colour. For £300+ worth of boot I’d have liked them to look smarter, really.
Bloody comfortable though!

fancynancyclancy · 09/06/2019 09:06

They are still in, most high street shops do a version of every year as they are easy. IM still sells them out.

I don’t use instagram any more but I noticed the focus seemed to shift from normal people wearing nice but wearable clothes with real style (alternative to fash magazines) to people having to wear every trend straight away. Also a lot of things are a thing on instagram but not so much the real world.

dudsville · 09/06/2019 09:24

I also did not know "dicker boots" were what I thought of as "western". Sooo comfortable, and the cut is great for my leg.

Musicforsnorks · 09/06/2019 11:39

Weird isn’t it?
If I recall, the blogs were supposed to represent a moving away from the mass produced, on trend stuff. Like a sort of minimalist philosophy (at least with regards to style).
I did wonder sometimes though if this was a ‘trend’ in itself........clouding a ton of old high street stuff into a charity bag so that you could excuse blowing thousands on designer ‘investment’ pieces.

Whilst I was never fully convinced by this, the blogs were kind of refreshing.

clickncollect I can see the off-black pair working really well/smartly with blue/dark blue skinny jeans. I probably would t wear with opaque tights, though. My taupe pair seem to go with everything and feel like velvet on my feet. I must get them out more often!

OP posts:
Musicforsnorks · 09/06/2019 11:43

dudsville they do have a somewhat western side profile, not so much from other angles. The low height possibly saves them from feeling a bit too barn-dancey though 😁

OP posts:
chasingseagulls · 09/06/2019 13:28

Clickncollect I had the off-black and sold them for that reason. There have been true black versions in some season releases, but my other problem was that the sizing is so inconsistent year on year, and between colours. Combined with having to order online, I never got the size just right, so I gave up a couple of years ago and haven't had a pair since.

I also meant to mention mija_mija as someone on instagram I still follow and love, and is a lover of the dicker. You only have to scroll back to the end of May to see her wearing her beige pair, but she wears them a fair bit in autumn winter, along with lots of other classic stuff that I know from following her she has had for years. She definitely does paid for posts, and as she's not in the UK and under the ASA, it sometimes isn't declared, but she has more to her feed and her blog than just fashion, I just think her styling is lovely.
