School white polo shirts - the best ones?

UserN0me · 06/06/2019 08:14

Hiya, it’s not really style and beauty but I’m in search of the best school uniform white polo shirts that withstand tumble drying and are as crease resistant as possible.

I’ve tried a few brands and they all seem to shrink and are creased even straight out of the tumble drier

Any recommendations??

Sainsbury Tu bionic 100% cotton but they are £7 for 3 so not the cheapest. They wash and wear much more nicely than tesco, next or asda.

We have them because they don't upset ds1s skin but I'm so pleased with them I buy for both children now.

KneelJustKneel · 06/06/2019 08:26

We go cheap and replace in summer.... honestly none seem to try last.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 06/06/2019 08:27

try the matalan ones. I found that even if they come out creased, you can hang them in the bathroom on a coathanger, whilst you shower, and the creases drop out thanks to the steam

Billydessert · 06/06/2019 08:29

M&S polo's have latest us all year and can take a hot wash without shrinking or going out of shape. So much easier to just buy once for the year IMO

federationrep · 06/06/2019 08:38

DD had 2 emergency ones from Tesco at end of last year as she had a big growth spurt & 2 from M&S bought last Summer holidays. There is no difference in the wear & tear and they are both looking a bit grey now. 2 M&S ones that were hand me downs from her big brother so bought 3-4 years ago and already had a years wear look pristine in comparison. Definitely a slide in M&S quality and no longer worth the extra £s imo.

KneelJustKneel · 06/06/2019 08:43

M and S ones we had tended to lose their white! It was that that made us give up and go cheap - which means theg always look fresh. We like M and S for girls shorts though.

We liked new looking ones for sports day and summer term for eldest. Youngest wears dresses in summer so only need to last two terms.

KneelJustKneel · 06/06/2019 08:45

Fed - exactly! All end up looking the same. Ive run new-to-you stalls in the past and gave up with polos. You can compare branding and once they've been warn there's little in it. There is for some other things though. It was great being able to compare brands after wear!

Always bought M and S ones 100% cotton and washed on 40 degree wash with other whites and fairy powder. Have lasted well and only been replaced when grown out of Wink

MyNameIsCharlesII · 06/06/2019 08:57

Sainsbury’s are the best. Dd is wearing the same ones she’s had for three years. Washed in Lidl bio powder (Which? best buy for whites) and they’re as white as ever.

They were big when I bought them and are verging on too small now of course but they’re still white had have never been ironed and usually tumble dried.

fiorentina · 06/06/2019 09:51

M&S or Sainos were fine. A regular wash with vanish and taking them straight out the tumble dryer when finished and they don’t need ironing.

BellMcEnd · 06/06/2019 09:56

My children are utterly filthy and literally come home from school looking like they’ve been eating yoghurt up chimneys. I buy the cheap supermarket polo shirts (usually Sainsbury’s) and stick them on a normal 40 degree wash with a splash of bleach. Seems to work.

MaMisled · 06/06/2019 10:03

Definitely M&S. Super quality and stay white.

KneelJustKneel · 06/06/2019 12:21

We buy sainsbos. Def come out of tumble dryer fine.

TantricTwist · 06/06/2019 14:18

Amazon - Fruit loom - very good quality and cheap.

TantricTwist · 06/06/2019 14:19

*Fruit of the Loom

TheJoxter · 06/06/2019 14:22

Tesco I find go grey, stain easily, and shrink lengthways so they end up short and wide (no good on my tall skinny DS) I bought some from sainsburys this year and they seem far better

CurlsandCurves · 06/06/2019 14:34

Nutmeg at Morrison’s, I find are excellent. Brilliant quality, wash and tumble well, the collar doesn’t go all funny like they can do on other brands I’ve tried.

UserN0me · 07/06/2019 09:08

Thanks everyone. I’ll give Sainsbury’s a try this time then and maybe the others recommended

I’ve tried Tesco, Asda and m and s and none of them have been worthy of handing down!

Been a while since I bought them but :

Sainsbury - best ime
M&S shrunk lengthways
Asda - looked grey

Fruit of the Loom - their PE polos (bought from school shop) were FotL . Honestly you couldn't kill them even with fire !
DS was passed to DD as a spare then they went to Charity Shop, still looked ok. Though they weren't washed as often as the school tops .

LucidDream · 07/06/2019 10:17

IME it's best to buy cheap supermarket ones that you can afford to replace, as they only get whiteboard marker all over them (or is that just my kids?), and it a bugger to wash out.

KneelJustKneel · 07/06/2019 12:05

No white polo shirts are worthy of handing down.

We as a PTA didnt accept them for resale in the end!

KneelJustKneel · 07/06/2019 12:06

White shirts have been fine though, and other uniform. Just not polo shirts. Ive actually found similar with white frilly ankle socks and just rebuy - but my kids are mucky!

WellTidy · 07/06/2019 17:10

Trutex are fab. They withstand a hot wash and the tumble dryer and I have never ironed them (and I iron pretty much everything). Ds2 is wearing ds1’s old ones and that is not true of the m and s ones that I used to buy.

federationrep · 07/06/2019 23:59

Jeez Trutex! My PE shirts were always Trutex. Didn't even realise they still existed. Will be ordering for DD if only so I can say "this is what mummy wore"
