40th birthday coming up & ive got £1000 to spend on myself. I was contemplating a bag but I’m now thinking jewellery would be nicer, would hold value & I could pass to my children. I’ve got a nice watch & some small diamond studs (from my 21st! So proud I’ve not lost them!) so contemplating a bracelet. Maybe a tennis bracelet? I’d like something I can wear day to day without looking over the top. I’m not sure where to start looking or which shops to consider so was hoping for some tips. I realise my budget isn’t massive in the world of diamonds!

Jewellery doesn't hold its value unless you buy Cartier etc. I would go for vintage looking at auctions to get more for your money or a very established seller on EBay.

Sunshine196 · 04/06/2019 17:46

I’ve been considering auctions. I’ll have a look. I don’t think much holds it’s value these days!

Thanks for the link. That one did look nice. I’ll keep an eye on the website. We’ve got a nice local independent jewellers that I totally forgot about so I might mooch there at the weekend. Something’s making me want to avoid high street jewellers for some reason.

Have a wonderful birthday! Honestly, most jewellery that presents good investment tends to be beyond the $10k mark. I'd suggest either going for a weight of gold made into something you love, or simply buying something you absolutely love without too much thought about the ability to retain value. I have some beautiful jewellery with diamonds sold through Israel, and we've always found the prices to be reasonable if you know where to access them domestically. My DH goes to Hatton Garden, or if I travel through Antwerp.

Sunshine196 · 04/06/2019 19:59

Yes I think you’re right. Getting something I love is the key. I’m feeling pressure to make sure I make the correct choice so I’ll just take my time.

My friend Wendy is a jeweller, she makes some beautiful pieces. Her website is www.oaklandjewellery.com

Hope you find something you love!

Sunshine196 · 04/06/2019 21:52

Thank you everyone. Definitely lots to think about.
Your friends website looks lovely. I might consider getting something bespoke.

Bespoke sounds lovely. It's my 40th next year and I'm thinking of asking Wendy to melt down some old jewellery I have and never wear and make me something new as a birthday treat to myself...

Sunshine196 · 05/06/2019 07:34

Sounds nice. I’m just not very creative so I’ll need to look around for some ideas first!

How about a bracelet - try antique fairs as well - I always go vintage or bespoke

What county do you live in (if in UK) ?
I travel around a lot due to my job and might be able to suggest non high st options

babysharkah · 05/06/2019 09:29

I have a similar amount to spend from my 40th back in April but haven't found anything yet so following with interest!

Sunshine196 · 05/06/2019 11:52

I like the second bracelet you have JaceLancs. I’m in Manchester.
@babysharkah it feels like a big decision doesn’t it! I think taking my time is the key. Happy 40th to you too x

@Sunshine196
Thank you I’ve seen the same bracelet not long ago in Weldons jewellers in Southport - who have a fair amount of pre-owned jewellery - think it was £995
There is a good second hand jewellers in Bolton and 2 in Bury
I’ve always found the Manchester ones too pricey
I would also google Dualco antique fairs - they do a fair few events around Manchester area - and there are some amazing bargains
A few years ago I bought an amazing opal ring at one of their fairs at George Carnall leisure centre and haggled it down to under £100 - it’s just been valued at £3500 😊
