If I dye an item which is a rusty colour, with a deep plum dye, what colour will it turn out? I don’t suit anything vaguely brown or orange based to trying to make it burgundy red or plummy

Or will it turn an awful brown colour? I’m nervous!

What fabric is the item as this effect the take up of the dye.

Figure8 · 03/06/2019 20:02

Can you bleach it, or use the colour remover first?

Figure8 · 03/06/2019 20:04

Ps
I think it would turn browny/ orangy

MikeUniformMike · 03/06/2019 20:12

It depends on the weight and composition of the fabric.
If it is cotton, you might get away with it, but if there is any visible stitching, the thread may be polyester, which won't dye.
I have dyed something orange red using dylon and it was ok. Turned out black.

Rooftree · 03/06/2019 20:18

The material is cotton so I’m confident the dye will take. The stitching should be ok as it’s mainly hidden and is a close enough colour anyway. I’m just concerned about making it even browner. Bleaching it first could work I suppose. I didn’t know there was a colour remover, I’ll have a look at that

Don't bleach it. The dye won't necessarily take on bleached bits.
I would try the plum dylon and follow the instructions to the letter. You could pop a tired t-shirt or something in at the same time.

QueenofCBA · 03/06/2019 20:23

I would go for it - the dark plum should be darker than the rusty colour. It might turn out a bit darker than expected.

Rooftree · 03/06/2019 20:24

Oh really, dye doesn’t work on bleached bits?
I’ve only ever dyed black jeans black when they’ve faded and it’s worked so well I thought I could do this but it’s not as simple as I thought Confused

Id be happy with a dark plum. Maybe I’ll go for it!

Is the rust more golden warm and the plum more red based? I'm not great at this but f that's the case then I think you'll need to dye it a few times to strengthen your choice because you're over colouring from different parts of the colour spectrum. I struggle with this but Google the colour wheel, look for what's closest to your original piece and then look at options maybe?

Rooftree · 03/06/2019 21:27

I’d say the rusty colour is fairly red rather than golden. I’ll look at the wheel, thanks!

As long as the dark plum colour is darker than the rust then I think you'll be fine as it's cotton fabric.

I dyed faded rust loose covers Dylon Tulip I think it was and they came out a lovely deep scarlet. I did have to use several boxes of dye. I'd definitely give it a go.

Rooftree · 03/06/2019 21:32

Thanks, the shape of the dress is lovely so it’s worth it as I never wear it -the colour is wrong on me. Wish me luck!

dudsville · 04/06/2019 20:21

Either "good luck!" or "how did it go?"

Ch3rryTree · 04/06/2019 20:24

Get in touch with Dylon- they advised me by email. You could send a photo of the item to show it's colour, plus photo of composition label. They'll tell you whether it will work.

Rooftree · 04/06/2019 20:26

I’m doing it tomorrow when I’ve bought the dye dudsville!
Maybe I should contact dylon first...

I think it might be a disappointing dirty brown. I love dying stuff - did flamingo pink and goldfish orange this week and will do a black load tomorrow. I should be a Dylon ambassador but I’m not!

Rooftree · 06/06/2019 11:13

I’ve done it! It’s ok. It’s definitely not plum as the dye was but I didn’t expect it to be. It’s darkened the fabric and taken the orangey tones out which is what I wanted. I’d describe it now as a burgundy colour really, on the warmer side but ok. Definitely better than it was before so I’m counting it as a success. Thanks for the advice

OP posts:
Rooftree · 06/06/2019 11:19

I guess it was the bluer tones in the plum dye which balanced out the orangey tones in the fabric? Anyhow I’m pleased so will try more things now I think!

Well done and thanks for the update.
