Do any of you know any? I’m a bit overwhelmed by all the stuff on YouTube (and I’m not very good at doing hair). I’d love to be able to plait my daughter’s hair.

Can you do a normal plait or are we starting completely?

CruCru · 03/06/2019 10:27

I can do a normal plait (and ponytail).

I'd love some help too please!

I have found that if you leave it long enough, they learn to do it themselves!

DD finally gave up on my attempts aged 11 and has been doing her own hair since.

I found something on YouTube called “Pretty hair is fun” last night. I might have a go based on that.

A good tip is to put your daughter's hair in a half ponytail - that way you have a definite starting point and the "French" bit isn't as long. Split the hair from the half ponytail into 3 and do two crossovers (left into the middle, right into the middle). This is where the juggling starts - one side at a time, add a section of loose hair to the left and right handfuls. Make them chunky to start off with as it makes it easier. Do two crossovers and repeat until you run out of loose hair, then continue the plait as normal.

This "baby steps" method worked for me when I learned to French plait my own hair, hope it helps! Eventually, you have less and less hair in the half ponytail and add smaller and smaller sections and before you know it you are doing a full French plait.

Part the hair and bobble the side in waiting out of the way

Take three normal sized chicks of hair and do two cross overs - using the hand with one strand collect a bit more hair - then do two cross overs - the single hair is now on the opposite side - collect note hair / keep going -

Keep the plat low to the head at all time

If just doing the front part the hair with a comb and finish the parting past and behind the ear- so the plat is away from their face

You can do this!!!

Cool - thank you!

Is it possible to do your own? I'm going to an outdoor concert next week and was thinking I'd like two French plaits as I won't have to worry about going frizzy if it rains etc and is like to pretend I'm a teen again

CruCru · 03/06/2019 20:35

A friend says that the Gymnastics teenagers she knows do side French plaits when they have class. However, this sort of thing is miles beyond me.

I’d love to be able to learn this too. I have tried so hard to learn but my dd always freaks out because they are “too puffy”!! What she means is the top bit starts ok, but after the ears it does start to go wrong and it’s never neat Confused

CruCru I have sat waiting for dd while she is in her trampolining class and watched quite a few of the girls doing amazing french and Dutch plaits on their own hair. I think they might think I’m weird because I just stare at them Blush

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 03/06/2019 20:48

I think I'd lose a finger!!

GreenTulips · 03/06/2019 20:52

Keep your hands low to the scalp and follow to the neck. Then platt the rest

CruCru · 10/06/2019 09:14

Having now spent a load of time on YouTube, my daughter is now refusing to let me try to French plait (or, frankly, any plait) her hair. Hey ho.
