Curly girl method question

Gottoloveabagel · 02/06/2019 20:01

So I'm seriously considering going for this in an attempt to stop heat damaging my hair. What happens when I go to the hair dressers and they are colouring it, they'd need to use their products wouldn't they?

My hair might be a bit short to do it at the moment but on the other hand it might grow better if I treated it better!

Any tips and product ideas gratefully received. Thanks

to be truly faithful to CG method you wouldn't colour your hair. you could see a curly hair specialist. and make sure you get an olaplex.

ritzbiscuits · 03/06/2019 20:57

I do semi curly girl method. I initially went whole hog, but my scalp just can't take never using a shampoo and shampooing with conditioner instead. I was getting terrible build up on my scalp and it itched really badly.

I therefore use a baby shampoo (Child's Farm), conditioner without -cones (Tresemme Naturals) and all products are CG friendly eg Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly, no hairspray etc.

I have my hair dyed with a semi permanent dye about 3 times per year. Hairdresser just uses her normal products which doesn't bother me. I'm one of those people that prefer doing my own hair!

So that's a none purists view! You may want to dive in and start trying some products, I'd worry about dying approach a bit further down the line.

ritzbiscuits · 03/06/2019 20:58

PS there are a few huge CG threads on Mumsnet to search for to get more product ideas.

Gottoloveabagel · 03/06/2019 22:36

Thank you! I think I might have to go for a non purist try and see what happens. I've just started going lighter and like the colour!

I take my own products when I get it cut, usually as I am co wash and a conditioner
Been nearly 3 years CG now and on my god, the difference in my hair

PickAChew · 03/06/2019 23:10

I follow curlyhair on reddit and loads of people on there colour or bleach their hair. It's worth checking out as people post their good hair days and routines.

I don't colour my hair but go to a lovely stylist. She was amazed at how my hair had changed from being coarse, wiry and frizzy to really soft and pliant, just by changing the products I use on it and I think was a little embarrassed that she coudn't get it back how I had it. I didn't even abuse it al that much before - just quitting silicones had an almost magical effect on it.

I probably will take my own products, next time. It's a rather offbeat salon, anyhow, so she'll probably be up for it.

YesQueen · 03/06/2019 23:13

@PickAChew my salon love it! They're always rummaging in the stuff I bring and smelling products and trying them out
Soultanicals was a big fave and the Giovanni tea tree Grin

PickAChew · 03/06/2019 23:29

@YesQueen I'm using mostly cantu, at the moment. The shampoo and conditioner feel as if they were made for my hair. It actually acquiesces to the stuff! If I don't use the curl custard or enhancer, I use a bit of the UG Curl Jelly. But yes, they'll probably love a bag of goodies to play with.

I'm not so fussed if it doesn't get a curly cut, s it's more wavy than curly, though I must admit that it does occasionally get caught out by a cut that goes against the grain. It's chin length, though, so if I cut it as per curly girl handook, this time around, the right hand side is perfect, but I'd have to trim the left hand side to about an inch higher! LHS is curlier than RHS, so it's not like I can consistently plan for it.

Gottoloveabagel · 04/06/2019 22:33

Well I've been practising up styles as I'm in a catch 22 right now. My hair needs less heat styling and the short front bits might actually grow but it looks awful growing it out. I can't leave it down currently without straightening it! So I'm going to do a bit of product switching and see what happens! Thanks all

Pickachew, how long did it take for your hair to lose its fuzziness please?

gubbsywubbsy · 07/06/2019 12:54

I do curly girl and colour my hair .. it's a bit weird for 2 days after but does calm down again ..

Greenvalleymama · 07/06/2019 18:01

I'm mostly curly girl and I still dye my hair, I just use my own conditioner afterwards without cones. I also now just skip the gel and blow dry my hair, which is kind of against the rules but it's still far less damage causing than blow dry/ straightening every day like I used to.
I did about a year of following it to the letter but my hair was taking all day to dry with the cast on, I looked like a scarecrow and it just wasn't worth it. So now I just co-wash with a cheap Wilko conditioner, use the same stuff to condition my hair and as a leave in, blow dry and go. It lasts a whole week before getting greasy at the roots, and my hair is the best it's ever been. Go for it, and don't be afraid to bend the rules if they don't work for you!

Greenvalleymama · 07/06/2019 18:11

This is the conditioner I use, it's 90p from Wilko and it's amazing!! It's thin and slippy enough to co-wash and I just add a bit of almond oil to it if I want a deep condition. It's so cheap, it's perfect for co-washing. A bottle lasts me about a month even though I use it for every stage of the hair washing process. My hair is so low maintenance now, it's a revelation to me still after a few years!!

Curly girl method question
Tilikum · 07/06/2019 21:14

I do curly girl and colour my hair. My hairdresser uses Olaplex, which helps.

After I've been to the hairdressers I wash my hair with a clarifying shampoo (cheapo Aldi one, it's like washing up liquid!) Then do a deep conditioning treatment on it. My favourite deep conditioners are Shea Moisture Black Castor Oil Masque and Hask Keratin Mask, both from Superdrug. Put a shower cap on, then wrap a towel over the top so the heat opens your hair follicles and lets the treatment in. Leave on for an hour then rinse off with your head upside down with lukewarm water. After that add all your creams and stylers.

Deep conditioning has been a true game changer for my hair and really sped up that horrible 'fluffy' stage of Curly Girl, when your hair is still too frazzled to curl properly.

Try tying your hair up with a claw clip too, as bobbles can wreck your curl pattern.

Good luck! It might take a few weeks but once your hair has settled into its curly style you won't want to go back to straightening!

womanaf · 07/06/2019 21:16

I let my hairdresser do her thing then just do a final wash to get rid of the silicones (with hand soap) and pick up where I left off. It’s fine.
