Grey roots won't take dye.

I dye my hair with Garnier Olia permanent dye. I love the colour (Vivid Garnet) it lasts well without fading and (I like to think) suits me quite well!

The problem is I'm 30 and have quite alot of grey for my age. The roots at the top of my head are fine but I have a small section near my temple which just doesn't seem to take the dye. I only did it a few days ago, washed once since then and I can already see it's fading badly and will be grey again within a week.

Is there another kind of dye that will work better? I've seen a few root touch-up pens which I think might work for going over that one section without a faff, but these seem to be mainly for browns and blondes.

The only home dye I've found that worked was when I invested in a big bottle of developer and bought the tubes of colour from the Goldwell TopChic range.
I had to google the charts to work out which colour I wanted, and search for the instructions, but for me it was basically 50/50 mixture. Amazon do cheap bowl and brush sets, so after buying the developer it worked out at £7.29 a time.

@OfMe this sounds very interesting! Don't suppose you have any specific links do you? I've often wondered if you could buy big lots as I often use two boxes of home dye and he cost adds up!

@HintOfRaspberry I use dark brown olia and I have a sort of similar issue. Covers the greys fine but it does seem to fade around my temple and just above my ears faster. I don't massively mind as they're never bright white like my roots.

whoops, link fail

Thanks OfMe, that looks like it might be worth a try.

I had wondered if Henna would work better, anyone know?

Thanks so much @OfMe

OfMe · 26/05/2019 17:37

no problem - it's been the only time I've ever been happy with a DIY job!

If I remember correctly that's a red colour isn't it? I had to stop colouring my hair red because it faded so quickly, especially on my greys. After switching to my 'natural' dark brown, it doesn't fade as quickly.

I have found granite doesn’t stick to my hair for long, the one that has worked better on my hair is John Frieda’s foam hair dye. It is wonderful, but it comes with a very small selection of colours😕

TanMateix · 26/05/2019 17:41

Granite??? With my luck I bet that sticks well to it! Damn the autocorrect, I was trying to write GArnier!

TanMateix · 26/05/2019 17:42

Interesting Fatted... I’m also using a reddish tone, wonder if that is the problem...

When I was home dying my hair red I used nice n easy root touch up (the actual dye, not the powder or spray) on the greys round my temples and hairline. I used the auburn one as my hair was a darker red but this one might be a better match for you.
