Best primers for those of us that produce enough oil on our faces to cook a full English?

What are the best primers to reduce shine? Ideally could last a day without needing to use blotting sheets throughout the day?

Does anyone use NYX shine killer? Does it do the trick?

Have you tried using powder before foundation? I know it sounds weird but works well.

VladmirsPoutine · 24/05/2019 20:10

No I haven't. Usually do powder after to 'set'. Willing to give it a go though. Summer is especially awful for my skin wrt unwanted shine. I can pull of the 'sun-kissed' glow look for all of my commute till I get to the office then its game over by 9:15am.

Smashbox photo finish, the pore minimising one. It’s fab. But is it maybe worth looking into your skincare routine too? My beautician always tells me that it’s a lot less about the product and a lot more about skin prep than we would think.

cuppycakey · 24/05/2019 20:23

Benefit Porefessional.

Nothing else works.

Amrapaali · 24/05/2019 20:24

Would love to know about skin prep. What should I be doing?

OP funnily enough the Biore sunscreen is a brilliant primer I've discovered. Yes a sunscreen but doesn't leave a white mask. Effectively keeps the grease at bay. Try the Watery Essence tube

Floralmoral · 24/05/2019 20:34

@Amrapaali I used to have a very oily skin. I stopped using anything harsh on it, it’s only gentle cleansers now, a lot of moisturising, oils and above all “Buffet” by The Ordinary. The annoying over-production of sebum has stopped and I can finally keep some makeup on, rather than have it sliding off my face before lunchtime.
I’d done some irreversible damage in the past and have some acne scars but in general my skin has never been better.

Amrapaali · 24/05/2019 20:48

Ooh thanks Floral yep cystic acne sufferer here. So much fun!! Hmm

I'm on the Retinol and Zinc/Niacinamide from Ordinary. Definitely can see an improvement. Extra sebum is a bit under control not completely tackled though. But agree skin looks so mich better...

Bioderma Sebium Pore Refiner from Boots and

I can't quite get the Paula''s choice to work under make up, but as a 'slap it on at lunchtime' over make up it's brilliant.

SinkGirl · 24/05/2019 21:04

Estée Lauder advanced night repair serum / powerfoil mask has made my skin so much less oily

Now using Benefit porefessional, followed by Urban Decay All Nighter foundation and Rimmel Stay Matte powder and I’m just not as oily as I was.

Pegase · 25/05/2019 07:50

Which blotting papers do you use @VladmirsPoutine ? Shine on my nose is ridiculous so really need to get some.

ThankYouDebbie · 25/05/2019 07:55

Benefit Porefessionel. So glad they do much bigger tubes of it now.

missjoanie · 25/05/2019 09:21

The NYX one you mentioned feels really silicone-y on me and broke me out. Most primers seem to, even Porefessional. Back in the 90s, 17 did an amazing gel mattifier. I’d love one like that to stop my oil slick!

Orchidflower1 · 25/05/2019 09:26

Body shop one is fab and really cheap too as is the Avon one.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/05/2019 12:56

@Pegase I use Clarins but I suspect kitchen roll would achieve similar results!

I'm using the ordinary products including buffet, a glycolic acid and I'm also using Elizabeth arden 50 spf, which is acting like a great primer tbh. Before I started this regime, which includes so called 7 skins, I also used wilko matting papers, They're under £1 each pack. But the regime has helped, It's so much better, and my makeup isn't sliding off my face anymore! I used to just slap stuff on top and hope for the best but it doesn't work for me, so now I'm looking after my skin in an effort to combat oiliness And help fine lines, pores etc - the Ordinary give you a range of things to try for your specific issues and they are so so cheap.

JellycatElfie · 25/05/2019 15:54

I’ve found adjusting my skin care works well too. I like the number 7 serum which seems to calm my skin down and currently
Using garniers new facial oil!

tierraJ · 25/05/2019 18:08

I use Clinique Superprimer

Lanaa · 26/05/2019 06:36

I'm naturally oily af and I've found that really taking care of my skin and layering on the serums and moisturisers has helped. I sat next to a dermatologist on a plane who gave me a impromptu consultation: basically my skin was over oily because it was dehydrated.

Morning I wash with LRP Effaclar H cream cleanser, tone with a glycolic. Then apply TO Alpha Arbutin + HA, Hada Labo Gokujun, which is an incredible hyaluronic acid and stops the overproduction of oil, then Cos RX snail mucin, LRP Hydraphase intense and finally the Japanese Nivea sun Water gel. I use NYX angel veil primer.

Nighttime routine is very similar but I use DHP oil cleanser and then LRP Effaclar foaming before the creams and serums. I've invested in Biologique Recherche toner and I finish off with Weleda Skinfood.

It does look like a lot of effort when written down but it's super fast - the whole routine takes a couple of minutes and it's really improved my skin.
