Right. I'm absolutely sick of the frizz. Can anyone tell me what the blooming heck to use on my hair?

It's medium-textured (not QUITE true, some of it is fine, some of it's coarse; it's just another of the joys of my problem hair, but overall I'd have to say medium), and it's wavy rather than curly (but straight in parts!)

I have a LOT of it. It's not thick hair per se, but there is a LOT of hair there.

It's almost shoulder length, with longish layers to break it up, and a soft fringe. I wear it up ALL. THE. TIME. As in, even to bed. I hate the way I look with my hair down (and so does everyone else in my life) and it suits me so, so much better up. Suits my face shape etc. I cannot/will not go short, though, despite never ever wearing it down, as short hair suits neither my hair texture/type nor my face shape. I will look like a startled toilet brush.

But my God, it's frizzy and flyaway and awful.

I have no idea where to start in overhauling my regime. I have a crappy crappy hairdryer that I long since lost the smoothing nozzle of, which is probably the biggest problem. I can afford a new dryer but not an expensive one. That said, if a particular hairdryer would make a huge difference all on its own, I could spend a hundred plus quid.

I just blast it dry, I have no time or ability to do anything else. I never straighten it, it looks shit if a hairdresser does. It needs to work with the bounce rather than against it iyswim.

PRODUCTS! Tell me products. I use an expensive moisturising shampoo (awapuhi?) that I'm not wedded to. I use Paul Mitchell leave-in conditioner. I have no idea if it's doing me any good. It's probably a littler frizzier if I don't use this. I occasionally use a TIGI shine/silicone smoothing jobbie that I always regret as I think my hair is frizzier for days afterwards.

It's just dry, frizzy central and I hate it.

Recommendations for dryers/products from washing through to styling, and tips much appreciated.

Oh and I'm trying very very hard to switch to only Cruelty-Free products.

You lot all sorted me out with my non-wafting kimono and I really need hair advice too!!

Google the curly girl method and do that. It transformed my curly hair.

HepburnKNotA · 19/05/2019 20:47

Leek, really? Do you think? My hair is absolutely not curly, it's got soft waves but no curl at all.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 19/05/2019 20:47

Sounds like my hair texture. I've found Liz Earle hair oil a game changer. Couple of pumps on wet hair, leave for a bit in a microfibre turban thing then bkow dry til almost dry. Then I sort of fiddle the ends til it finds its curl!

cpjoli · 19/05/2019 20:48

Keratin blowdry! Changed my life. Frizzy, unruly, always up, to easy to manage, sleek and lighter.
Love it!

LoafofSellotape · 19/05/2019 20:49

Head and shoulders with argan oil both shampoo and conditioner or Pantene smooth as silk shampoo and conditioner.

L'Oréal Extraordinary hair oil or Frizz Ease or the really big guns is Frizz Dismiss by Redken.

Blow dry with round brush and Parlux hair drier ( makes a difference ime) you have to just accept you have to put a bit of effort in, very few people can just wash and leave it and look fantastic.

Doubt any of that is cruelty free though you'd have to research.

boxlikeamarchhare · 19/05/2019 20:50

This elixir, my hairdresser used it on my hair about eight years ago. I went back into the salon the following week to ask him what he had used and I have used it ever since.

GlossyTaco · 19/05/2019 20:52

Maui moisture shampoo and conditioner, leave to dry for 30 minutes , apply some garnier banana hair food , blow dry with a Revlon one step volumizer hot air brush. Finish with some soap and glory serum.

My hair sounds similar to yours and I get good results.

HepburnKNotA · 19/05/2019 20:54

cpjoli, I used to get the keratin blowdries done but I fell out of love with them, I saw photos of myself from when I had them done a while ago and couldn't believe how flat my hair looked :( Plus in all honesty I can't really afford the upkeep, I'm in London and don't know of anywhere that does keratin for much less than £100.

Usuallyinthemiddle, ood, nice tip re the Liz Earle, I might try that.

Sellotape, I have heard argan oil is good. Frizz dismiss by Redken sounds right up my street! Will have to investigate the cruelty free anspect.

How much are Parlux hairdryers these days? I used to have one that lasted about 3 months and then started to smell dangerously of burning... should have got my money back but it was right around the time I got pregnant so it slipped my mind!

GlossyTaco · 19/05/2019 20:55

Pantene gold styling cream is also good but it's really heavy , the garnier hair food might be better for you.

dudsville · 19/05/2019 20:55

I noticed with my frizz prone hair that putting it up, as i used to do every night, made it frizzier. I think being pulled up close to my head, the warmth, possibly a bit of night sweat, who knows, but it's smoother if i let it be.

Only comb it in the shower with conditioner and a wise tooth comb. Otherwise i finger comb.

I blow dry it and use gigantic hot rollers because it softens my hair, gives me some control to what would otherwise look like a shrub.

I spent about 6 months trying all sorts of recommendations for products, so i think each of us needs to find our own holy grail. Mine was found through products listed for afros, i.e. dry kinky hair. I wash it every 4 to 5 days, i use hair oil in between and especially on high humidity days.

Good luck!

isabellerossignol · 19/05/2019 20:56

My hair is like yours (I had a thread last week about how it was driving me crazy).

I have discovered a conditioner that really works for me and it's so cheap that it's frankly ridiculous. I put a generous amount on and brush it through in the shower then rinse and it leaves my hair falling in nice waves but without being weighed down.

Right. I'm absolutely sick of the frizz. Can anyone tell me what the blooming heck to use on my hair?
HepburnKNotA · 19/05/2019 20:56

oooh march hare, I like the look of that elixir. Is it silicone free, do you know? I just have this suspicion that silicone makes my hair worse...

GlossyTaco thank you, Maui moistire is one I've seen in Boots (I think).

Will look up that hot air brush too.

isabellerossignol · 19/05/2019 20:57

Oh and on the advice of clever posters on my own recent thread, I have stopped wrapping my hair in a towel or piling it on top of my head. And that has helped a lot too.

HepburnKNotA · 19/05/2019 20:58

isabelle, I will look up your thread! Thank you!

dudsville, I think you're spot on about everyone finding the specific selection of products that works for them and I feel I've never quite got there. I don't have much spare £ so I'm so anxious about spending a lot on products if they're not going to work and I have to just try more!

llangennith · 19/05/2019 20:59

This might be worth a try. I've used a Mason Pearson hairbrush for 50 years. Tangle Teaser on wet hair. I have very flyaway frizzy hair. About 6 months ago I lost my MP brush and started using my TT all the time. After a few weeks I noticed my hair had less static and frizz. I think the TT doesn't cause any static.

MumUnderTheMoon · 19/05/2019 21:01

I'm trying no shampoo method for dds hair. Basically you only use conditioner to wash your hair.

Mabelface · 19/05/2019 21:04

I wash and condition my hair with Superdrug own brand coconut and almond conditioner. Brush when wet with a tangle teaser, then a dollop of Boot's curl creme (£1.99) and that's it, job done.

HepburnKNotA · 19/05/2019 21:05

thanks so much everyone.

llanegennith (whisper) I never ever brush my hair. As in NEVER. I finger-brush it. Comb occasionally when wet. I LOVE TT brushes on DD's hair but hers is silky and lovely even when it's tangled. If I brush my hair at ALL, I look like Captain Caveman. Honestly, it's appalling.

Isabelle, I've scoured the last few days' threads but can't find your thread... any chance you could link to it? I'm probably being dozy but I just can't find it! Huge thanks either way.

HepburnKNotA · 19/05/2019 21:06

Mabel, ah, thank you, I'm keen on Superdrug as it's cheap AND cruelty-free... might try those!

A pp is right in that you might have to experiment to find what's right for you. I've been looking for almost a year but have finally found "my" products.

My daughter is thrilled at the many lovely products that I've passed down to her.

isabellerossignol · 19/05/2019 21:13

here is my recent thread. I thought it was only last week but apparently I had actually lost track of time!

I described my problem as being too tangled, which it was, but there was a frizz issue too. Smile

Itssosunnyout · 19/05/2019 22:09

As a pp has suggested Google the curly girl method. Its also used for each hair.
It focuses on products, what ingredients/chemicals to avoid. I would certainly invest in a sulfate free shampoo and a better leave in conditioner.
Asiam, shea moisture, cantu, trepadora and boucleme have excellent ranges
Try to do regular deep condition treatment and maybe once a month a protein treatment.

Roja27 · 19/05/2019 22:15

I found the thing that worked the best for my hair which sounds similar to yours are shampoo/conditioner and hair mask with argan oil. Definitely use a mask at least once a week. Frizz ease is good too.

LillithsFamiliar · 19/05/2019 22:23

Your hair sounds similar to mine. It's thick, wavy and prone to frizz. I agree with PPs that it's a process of trial and error. I've also found that my hair needs change over the years so what I used at 20, doesn't work now I'm in my 40's. Anyway, for days when I want to let it be messy I work a sea salt spray through it whilst it's damp. It takes the frizz out and makes the tousled look seem intentional.
If I want a sleeker look then I use a Philip Kinglsey Elasticizer pre-shampoo, towel dry then use straighteners.
I've found a good cut makes all the difference too.

SlipperOrchid · 19/05/2019 22:31

I’m following this thread with interest. My hair is similar but in the past couple of weeks it is much much worse. The only things I had tried was a silicone free shampoo and I had also started using a product called wow dream coat that I read about on here. My hair has NEVER looked worse.

I use a parlux dryer, a round bush. I have bought SO many products recommended by hairdressers. I have Argan oil. I don’t wash daily. Nothing works and like you I tie it up every day. My pony tails look terrible though as I have never figured out how to make it look stylish despite looking at many uiTube tutorials, all made by women with long sleek hair.

In despair I had it cut to my shoulders a couple of months ago and it didn’t help. It needs the length to help weigh it down.

I have a Babyliss big hair and I would advise against buying it. It broke my hair particularly around the front of my face so the sides look wispy in places.
