A question about cutting curly hair

I have thick curly/wavy and am a bit frustrated by how it's been cut recently. I've found a hairdresser I like but every time she cuts my hair she blowdries it straight to cut it As she says it helps her get it cut right. But it doesn't seem to stick out and it right once I've washed it and it's gone back to its usual wavy kinky.

I'm thinking that she should be following the hair growth and going with the curl. Am I right about this and if so, do need to look for a specialist in cutting curly wavy hair? I'm a bit disappointed as I like my current hairdresser

@myidentitymycrisis

Here you go! Before, it was a mismanaged birds nest. And I have alopecia, so I had visible scalp and very flat roots.

As a PP wrote, a good haircut lasts longer when each curl is cut individually. So I pay less annually even though the individual cuts are pricier.

Your hair looks great. I’m going to look up Deva cut now. I can’t get away with infrequent cuts with a short style though.
Here’s mine

Youliana is great! I’ve also had a brilliant curly cut and pintura highlights from Stephanie at Curly Hair London in Denmark St. A proper curly dry cut and the right products will make a huge difference.

@CatherineMaitland I’m so pleased to see your recommendation here - I found Fabian’s website when looking for a curly salon near Dorset but wasn’t sure if the trek was worth it when my current hairdresser does an ok job!

Itssosunnyout · 19/05/2019 22:03

Try spring in Birmingham.

You're best getting your hair cut dry and curl by curl. You go in with your hair styled like you normally do (I go with day 2/3 hair as its the nicest) and the stylist will cut it curl by curl as they will see where your hair naturally falls which curls are more could than others etc.

It can be expensive but its worth it and if you follow a good regime with limited heat, keeping on top of deep moisture, protein and oiling etc you may only need 1 cut a year

CatherineMaitland · 19/05/2019 22:54

@Hissinggoose It's an hour's drive for me but it is well worth it. Put it this way: since the first cut, I've been wearing my hair loose some days for the first time in 25 years.

He said he's had people from Australia and Norway too!

I cut my own hair, curl by curl.
I started to do this becayse absolutely without exception every single hairdresser I've been to has fucked it up in one way or another.
So for a couple of years I've cut it myself and honestly it has never looked better, probably saved a fortune too.

If you join the curly girl group on facebook (think it's called Curly Girl UK or something like that) they have a map of all the hairdressers who can cut curly hair properly!

accendo · 20/05/2019 02:07

You need to find a hairdresser that dry cuts curl by curl. Look on FB for a curly girl method group in your area and they will be able to give you recommendations.

I cut my own hair curl by curls and have great results. This youtube video was helpful

I am CG and use two hairdressers depending on availability!
One is a dry cut which costs me £10 and she cuts curl by curl. The other is a wet cut and is £37 but they cut it really well and exactly as I want

Find a hairdresser what does a lot of curly hair, you want to see loads of photos of there work with curls not the one token photo

Curly and wavy hair is best cut dry.

EssentialHummus · 20/05/2019 12:48

I wasn’t impressed with Jay/Youliana (also, irrelevant but a bit strange, Jay seemed very keen to hide that Y was her mum... no idea why). Spring was good, but a real trek for me in SE London. Michael Price/Unruly very very good but north of £100 a cut last time I went.

nellyitsme · 20/05/2019 16:00

By chance today I found a post about curly hair on my local Facebook page and there's a curly hair specialist in Loughborough 15 miles away from me

Hair Magic. Natasha was trained by Lorraine Massey the Curly Girl founder.

I have very curly hair and have had many awful hair cuts 🙈 I have found a couple of places that are well worth travelling to, I've never left them feeling terrible about myself or filled with regret. I love what their skills and trust them enough to do what they'd like.

I think Unruly Curls in London are brilliant and well worth a visit, Grace, Michael and Anthony do funky and cool hair.

Aveda Urban Therapy in Nottingham has a hairstylist called Ben who does amazing cuts and colours. His cuts grow out really well and he pays a lot of attention to how you like to style your hair and the time you have to work with it.

I really didn't rate Spring in Birmingham, they stuck me under one of those lamp/dryer contraptions, hair looked okay when I left but never looked the same again and I'm pretty good at styling my hair. Was really disappointed.

Good luck!

I’ve had some pretty horrible hairdresser experiences before finding ones that properly understand curly hair. Alan Milner, who works in London and will cut your hair at home (and is great with colours too) is a curly specialist and does some famous curly people. He’s cut my hair for years.

MightyMunki · 25/05/2019 06:04

I don’t rate Unruly at all, they cut wet and spent about 2 minutes on the actual cut, and for weeks afterwards people were telling me there were ‘gaps’ in my hair Confused. Best cuts I’ve had have been by Jay and Youliana, they cut dry and take their time to shape the hair in its natural state so easy to recreate the style at home.

All I can recommend is to find someone with decent pics of their work (I looked for pics of people with a similar hair type as myself in their Instagram/ on their websites).
