Personal shopper (maybe JLewis) advice for everyday clothes - not special occasion?

Hi all of you who've done personal shoppers and anyone else with info! I'm wondering about booking a personal shopper (the John Lewis ones seem to get good feedback) but all the reviews Ive seen seem to focus on occasion outfits or high end work wear. I'm actually looking to do something about my day to day messy clothing Grin - do you think that would work? I guess my fears are it would all be really expensive for just regular clothing or that they're not geared up for that. Any thoughts very much gratefully received.

There is no pressure to buy anything or have a high budget.

As a starter the JL website has a rather good AI personal style planner. If you don’t have a clue where to start then I’d give that a go (and if you really hate its suggestions then the JL personal shopper is unlikely to work for you).

I did JL for every day and it was great. I chose a few things from those suggested and have since used the advice to make better choices. I like their online style advice too as you can tailor to your taste.

I've used John lewis personal shopper lots and it doesn't need to be for a special occasion and is a great service. I love having a massive lovely changing room all to myself with no need to get dressed to go and get more stuff as the shopper does it. You can get through trying on a tonne of clothes in a short time.

Great thanks everyone. Weirdly that info has revealed that Im actually a bit scared of a personal shopper trip so I just need to deal with that now. I actually didnt realise I was expecting people to say no no dont bother with that for everyday stuff and then I wouldnt have to take it further Grin! But I definitely need to move forward on my mess so I think I'm going to do it - will report back hopefully soon. Thank you also Anton for the AI link - I couldnt find it on their website at all.

Dw and I want to do this.

I might be getting too old for hoodies and skate shoes :)

I did Debenhams and came out with an amazing jacket! It does encourage you to spend more than you might have otherwise though.

RiddleyW · 20/05/2019 07:05

It depends who you get I suppose. I did JL and was really disappointed- came away with one dress. I think I was maybe too much of a challenge (short and dumpy), but she hardly had anything to suggest.

My husband gifted me a nice sum of money and booked me a personal JL appointment about 10 months after I had my 2nd baby. I wanted practical, everyday clothes. I can honestly say that those 2 hours in that giant dressing room were incredible. The personal shopper helped me so much, I felt so pampered. She genuinely just wanted to help me look my best. We had discussed budget and there was no pressure. I needed jeans, tops, tunics and a few bras.

stucknoue · 20/05/2019 07:14

We did it a couple of times in Debenhams and it was great, a wardrobe revamp is a great thing to ask for. Just be sure to have your parameters worked out especially budget and what outfits you want for it

Hollowvictory · 20/05/2019 07:34

Op its not scary at all it's a really pleasant experience, give it a try, but do have a decent budget and let them know in advance what that is

Mrscog · 20/05/2019 07:37

Do it, it’s a brilliant experience - John Lewis all the way. I’ve done it twice now for everyday.

DarlingCoffee · 20/05/2019 15:06

This is a new online service from M&S which might be worth trying - it’s free

I did the JL one for a wardrobe update, and it was great. I went in thinking my short, fat body was beyond help, but the stylist was so encouraging and helpful, and honest as well - she didn't just tell me I looked good in everything to try and drive up my spend. She didn't succeed in getting me into short skirts and doing French tucks, but I really liked that nothing was ruled out.

SittHakim · 20/05/2019 22:13

It obviously does depend who you get. I did JL (for a specific occasion) and the woman I got clearly thought making me look half decent was totally beyond her. I'm a short hourglass and I know I'm difficult to dress, but I was practically in tears by the time she'd finished. (All was not lost, kind people on here helped me find an outfit.) I wouldn't be in a hurry to repeat the experience.

Have a look at Styled By Susie. She's a stylist who specializes in styling normal people with high street budgets. You can book a personal shop (she is booked up like a year in advance though) or you can get an online package which is what I've done. You find out your seasonal palette, your body shape (mine wasn't what I thought but can see now Susie was right!), your style personality and then get a guide as to what will suit you. I'm building my capsule wardrobe now and its given me a real sense of direction with what I should be buying and stopped me buying tat.
Highly recommend!
