Advice please on highlights & covering greys

My hair js brown but with greys appearing more frequently. I have been having a semi permanent colour put on for a few months but I think it washes me out. I’ve always had highlights in the summer and I really want to get some more done but I am confused about a few things.

What colours should i ask for for the highlights, how do i know what will suit me
Eg ash, caramel, lowlights??

How do I avoid it looking stripey? I am worried I could end up with orange stripes and look like a tiger.

What do you do when the grey roots start coming through? One hairdresser I spoke to said I could alternate with a tint on the roots one time and then more highlights the next. But what colour should the tint be? Brown like my natural colour?

How do I stop it becoming too blonde? Really I would like it to be my natural brown but with some light bits but if I keep getting highlights surely the brown will become less and less.

I have actually been to a couple of hairdressers to ask them what the best thing to do is and tried to ask all these questions. I didn’t fully understand the answers and the terms they were using like the no.s of the colours, my semi is a 6 currently apparently.

Sorry its long but I have booked in for Friday and want to make sure I know what I’m exactly asking for. My main aims are to cover my grey roots, keep naturalish browny colour but have some lighter strands too, natural ‘sunkissed’ effect.

Can anyone help at all please?

If you have warm skin tone then caramel would suit you but if you’re on the cooler side then ash is better.
A good hairdresser won’t do stripy highlights.
When the grey comes through it will be less noticeable, the hairdresser will then do more highlights with brown in between so it will be multi tonal keeping your natural hair colour. It won’t go too blond if the hairdresser keeps doing blond and brown each time
