Fashionable quality clothing

FriendsForeverForNow · 18/05/2019 21:31

I’ve not bought any clothes this year after buying quite a lot of rubbish fast fashion over the years.

I need a dress for a funeral but also just a few prices of quality clothing.

I’m in my late twenties, size 6/8, 5f3 and my budget is moderate.

Would any more fashionable members of the forum be able to recommend something for me?

Bump.
Anyone?

I'm the same. Aways bought from primark, new look and h&m but the clothes are crap material. Struggling to find fashionable clothes in a nice cut and material.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 19/05/2019 11:13

Perhaps no one’s sure what a ‘moderate’ budget means. Or whether you want things for work (formal or not) or leisure.

And - are you in the U.K.?

Floisme · 19/05/2019 11:16

I think you scared people off, asking for the more fashionable members of the forum Grin

The best quality I know on the high street is Cos but I'm not sure if it qualifies as fashionable and it's not to everyone's taste.

Floisme · 19/05/2019 11:16

Me and Em too - quite a bit spendier but good sales.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 19/05/2019 11:46

Thing is, late twenties is a time for experimentation surely? I’d really hesitate to make suggestions to someone of your age.

However ... There was no internet shopping when I was in my twenties. (I probably wore mostly Top Shop, vintage and greatly reduced cutting edge designer stuff.) If there had been, and I wanted a one stop shop for browsing (from where I would broaden my search to other places) I might take a look at Matches. (Online) For a moderate budget I’d probably stuck to their Sale sections - setting the page to scroll from low to high prices.

But other people will suggest Dorothy Perkins. Or Next. Or that you book a personal shopper at John Lewis. Don’t listen to them ...

Floisme · 19/05/2019 11:56

I think it's the combination of fashion and quality that's got people stumped, unless you have a very high budget.

Both Zara and Warehouse have had a number recs on here lately - I think Warehouse in particular have a new(ish) director of design who's getting plaudits. But I'm not sure even their biggest fans would say they're great quality.

fancynancyclancy · 19/05/2019 11:57

Zara, Warehouse & Topshop (particularly the Boutique range) will have some good quality bits.
I find Cos the most consistent.

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 19/05/2019 11:58

Jack Wills? Would suit your shape, a lot of it is timeless? X

chainmail · 19/05/2019 12:04

And Other Stories

GeorgeTheBleeder · 19/05/2019 12:07

I suspect the OP’s idea of a moderate budget is not going to encompass the lower end of the average High Street ...

MikeUniformMike · 19/05/2019 12:07

Jigsaw, Hobbs

fancynancyclancy · 19/05/2019 12:14

Higher budget The Outnet or Matches etc on sale.

Floisme · 19/05/2019 12:20

If you're looking for a leg up from the high street but you're not quite in the Matches league, how about Young British Designers?

GeorgeTheBleeder · 19/05/2019 12:29

Hah! Floisme - Great minds. I looked at that black dress yesterday but decided it wouldn’t be quite right for a funeral.

(Also it’s a site I’m reluctant to share ...)

Floisme · 19/05/2019 12:35

I got it from another poster George (could even have been you? Wink) and I've been hooked ever since.

BumbleNova · 19/05/2019 13:01

Have you looked at Zara recently? I've bought some great things recently in really nice fabrics. I was surprised - Zara always used to be rubbish but this season they are on fire.

FriendsForeverForNow · 19/05/2019 13:12

Thank you for the replies!
GeorgeTheBleeder moderate for me means not on the 100s/1000s for a normal item and not a special event. I need all formal, work and leisure. Really most of my clothes are just awful. And yes I’m in the UK

Floisme haha I’m sorry. Just thought anyone is more fashionable than me at the moment.

I have Bumble - usual thing; great styling on the website, dreadful limp synthetic fabrics in the shops - mostly. (There’s the odd ok thing - but I’m always aware I could buy a similar thing in a better quality elsewhere which won’t need to be replaced within months.)

I daresay if you’re of a delicate build, and like shopping continuously it’s quite fun - but only the fiercest tailoring works for me, and I like a couple of years to get to know any new item of clothing.

But who knows what the OP might like.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 19/05/2019 13:16

Aha! You’ve returned.

Where do you usually shop?

FriendsForeverForNow · 19/05/2019 13:34

I have a coat I like from Zara but I’ve always thought the clothes don’t suit me. I’m an hour glass figure and most of their clothes are meant to hang right? Or I’ve just missed some great prices.

I’ve mainly got things from H&M, New look, miss selfridge and Dorothy Perkins and while I loved them at the time they are not timeless and I need an update. I also want to look more finished if that makes sense. I feel some of the things I have are too young.

I’m checking out some of the recommendations now like Jack Willis, jigsaw, Hobbs! Thank you

@georgethebleeder - I am currently both of those. Ive got a six month old so I've been in maternity and nursing clothes for ages now and I'm enjoying injecting a bit of spark back into my wardrobe. It's absolutely not a classic pieces kind of shop but if you want something fun, it's great. I wore a fabulous Zara jumpsuit out last night and people kept stopping me to ask where it was from.

BumbleNova · 19/05/2019 14:02

OP - I think it really depends on what you want when you say pieces that are timeless. Do you need formal work Staples? Great denim? Knitwear?

For knitwear I go to cos and arket. My work Staples are Hobbs, banana republic and boden.
