Emperor's New Clothes - what beauty products are over rated?

Charlotte Tilbury - style over substance, the money seems to have gone on the packaging and marketing rather than the ingredients. The eye pencils are terrible and Pillow Talk is so bland. The skincare descriptions are a load of nonsense.
Clarins beauty flash balm - does nothing for me and pills like nothing else
Clinique chubby stick - meh to me
Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser - no coverage? Costs more than most foundations.
Liz Earle cleanse and polish - stingy malingy
Most perfumes - Jo Malone are very expensive given the poor longevity and spillage.

All of them.

NigellasGuest · 17/05/2019 18:08

Clarins Beauty Flash balm for sure!
Clinique Moisture Surge - brings me out in spots.
I have a Charlotte Tilbury lipstick and a lip liner. The lipstick is meh but I love the liner.

RussellSprout · 17/05/2019 18:29

Anything by Clinique

Anywhere selling lipsticks at more than £30, you don't need to spend £30 on a lipstick!

Honeybee85 · 17/05/2019 18:32

MAC Mineralize Foundation: awful coverage, makes skin looks very shiny, lays on very thick but wears off very easily. A lot of drugstore foundations are twice the quality of this expensive one!

UpToonGirl · 17/05/2019 19:41

Chanel soliel du tan (cream bronzer)... Universal my arse! Way too dark and warm on my pale skin and I don't see how it would suit someone with dark skin either.

Hourglass powders, not bad but not amazing.

Liquid gold, again not bad but plenty of cheaper options that are exactly the same.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 17/05/2019 19:44

I think Cliniwue chubby sticks are amazing, esp the Whole Lotta Honey lip stick, best colour on the market and very nourishing Smile

I did not like liquid gold, it really stung and gave me a few cracked mini veins on my cheek! Wtf!

Lunaballoon · 17/05/2019 19:45

The Ordinary

Madbengalmum · 17/05/2019 20:22

St tropez in shower tan, horrid stuff.

Theclearing · 17/05/2019 20:25

Guerlain midnight secret, horrid smell and zero difference!

Also Charlotte Tilbury.

Shitonthebloodything · 17/05/2019 21:37

Charlotte Tilbury especially that God awful old lady perfume. Eau de care home.

Louboutin nail polish and lipsticks etc. Entirely paying for the packing which I hate myself for liking.

origamiunicorn · 17/05/2019 21:38

Never tried it but apparently that Creme de Mer some celebs gush about is basically the same as Nivea classic.

Sexnotgender · 17/05/2019 21:39

I bought a Tom Ford foundation and was seriously underwhelmed.

TeacupDrama · 17/05/2019 21:39

all of them that cost more than £5
in the case of soap, deodorant and toothpaste ( which I say as a dentist) over £3

LightOfAThousandStars · 17/05/2019 21:56
  • Yes to the CT lipsticks, I've bought a couple and prefer my Mac ones over them.
  • The Ordinary, lots of hype over their products but I didn't find them to be anything special and same for their foundations.
  • Benefit Hoola, looked too dirty on my skin.
  • Huda Liquid Lipstick, dried out lips.
Sagradafamiliar · 17/05/2019 22:20

Oh my goddd I agree with most of the products mentioned here.
Mac foundations= bad skin in a bottle
Benefit hooks= powdered muck
Chanel soleil de tan= creamy muck
Clarins flash balm= emperor's new clobber
Liz earle face stuff= really unpleasant
Clinique anything= no.
Charlotte Tilbury= marketing and hype, dahhhling!

RainbowSparklyTrainers · 18/05/2019 08:22

Most of them. I’ve been through god knows how many products from MAC, Chanel, Avene, every brand you can name really and they’ve all been meh and a waste of cash. So I stick to Cetaphil, Superdrug acid pads and Aveeno and my skin is the best it’s ever been.

Sigh81 · 18/05/2019 08:41

Emma Hardie Moringa cleansing balm: I have deeply unsensitive skin which has never reacted to ANYTHING ever. Except this cleansing balm: lots of tiny red bumps all over my skin, so disappointing!

dudsville · 18/05/2019 09:09

I agree with most of this, however i use and love eve lom cleanser and this thread just reminded me i keep meaning to try the EH moringa one. If anyone's curious, it's £7/8 cheaper, and 15% off at look fantastic using code lh15.

Beauty flash balm is pointless. I'm slowly using it up on days off, when i remember.

I prefer Egyptian Magic to EA8hr cream.

DarlingCoffee · 18/05/2019 09:11

Guerlain midnight secret used to be amazing when it was in the glass bottle but now they appear to have changed the formula. I asked someone at guerlain about this and they swore it wasn’t changed but it has!

newjobnerves · 18/05/2019 09:14

I disagree with a couple of these! I love Liz Earle, I know I could probably get the same result with any hot cloth cleanser but it's transformed my skin. I used to have bad acne, sought treatment which left me with very dry skin but I was always scared to moisturise in fear of causing my spots to return. The cloth scrubs my skin which noticeably cleared my forehead of dry patches in a week and the moisturiser is light enough to not make my skin greasy. I buy it when it's on offer, which is often.

Also like the Huda lipgloss, it is drying but I find reapplication sorts it out so for the price doesn't bother me.

I haven't got on with Nyx lip gloss, it was watery.

Yet to find a shampoo that does what it says it'll do.

Wormentrude · 18/05/2019 10:03

@dudsville I use the EH balm and have for a couple of years - it keeps my awkward, changeable skin really happy and I love it. I also like the cloths you get with it, although I use them for bathing my baby with as I just use my fingers for the cleanser.

MotherOfMinions · 18/05/2019 11:02

Agree with all of the above, you’re just paying for the pretty packaging and feel good factor. I always go for mid range products- Revlon, Max Factor etc as it’s not cheap and nasty or overpriced

Sakura7 · 18/05/2019 11:08

YSL Touche Eclat does nothing for me. Cheap Catrice concealer is much better.

All eye creams have been useless for me.

I do like Mac foundation (studio fix) and Benefit blushers, but you have to be careful to get the right shades and apply sparingly.

MorrisZapp · 18/05/2019 11:17

Glad of the heads up re soleil universal, my sister in law raves about it but I'll save my cash.

Tinted moisturiser isn't tinted moisturiser, it's foundation. I've yet to find one that is actually sheer but has colour so I've given up. Decleor have a new one that looks interesting but it's 58 quid so feck that.

Bum Bum cream. Smells lush but the entire range is entry level quality. I found the Coco de Perle range from Other Stories, smells exactly the same for a fraction of the price.

stoplickingthetelly · 18/05/2019 12:11

Charlotte Tilbury for me too.
