I’m going for the first time this year, but unsure what to wear. I need to be comfortable as will be doing lots of walking and tube travel but smart at the same time.

Any ideas?

A dress you might wear to afternoon tea with flats.

To be honest people go in a variety of clothes from very informal to a bit more dressed up, like afternoon tea clothes as a pp poster said.
You are on your feet a lot, so comfort is key. Also, unless you are going the first day, really does not matter that much. Which day are you going?
Last year I wore a long linen white and blue dress, something like this, as it was one of the hottest day of the year

But really, last year on the last day people did not dressed up at all. This day I am going on the first day, so I will have a nicer dress.

Not fashion related but take an antihistamine even if you don't have hayfever. There's a serious amount of pollen. Dress wise, I'd say dressy casual.

I’m thinking this. But not sure about shoes.

I’m going on Saturday.

Or this might look better with trainers / converse?

If I was going I would just wear casual, weather appropriate clothes with comfortable shoes. So, dress 2 would be my choice. TBH I didn't realise there was a dress code.

There was a thread about this the other day. I went several years ago - it was incredibly hot and I wore wide-legged linen trousers and a sleeveless top. If you're not going into one of the corporate event tents you don't need to dress up. But do make sure you wear comfortable shoes - it was absolutely rammed and there was very little space to sit down so you'll be on your feet for most of the day.

stringbean · 17/05/2019 10:37

I would go with option 2 and trainers/converse.

Check the weather,we got drenched walking from the grounds to the tube.
Also make sure it's something your happy sitting on the grass in as that will be the only place to sit while you sip your Pimm's.

Thanks everyone. In my head I am tall and slim, wafting around in a long floaty dress. In reality I am short, slightly overweight with a waist thickened by menopause Grin

The weather is not looking good for next week either, so probably a cagoule Grin

I've been a few times: there are people wearing all sorts, so basically you won't go wrong! The serious gardeners are in trews and comfy shoes scrumming for the best look at the gardens and eating their M&S sarnis perched on the grass, to the society types are sipping champagne in the bar their lovely outfits! It's certainly smarter than say Hampton Court flower show, but there's still a huge mix. Assuming you want to do more than sip champagne, bear in mind it can be quite cramped and busy in sections and you will do loads of walking and standing, so don't compromise comfort for floating gorgeousness! I've worn garden party type frocks to nice jeans and a top and never felt wrong...
