Can teachers wear jumpsuits to work?

Staff dress casually in my school (secondary). It is an all girl school.
Amongst the female staff I have only ever seen one woman wear a suit for example. The principal favours bare legs and above the knee shift dresses - she just adds tights in the colder weather.
In the last few days the weather has been hotter and the female staff have been wearing floaty dresses including sleeveless ones, and open toe sandals are everywhere. They look great and cool. As with every year I struggle with dressing in the hotter weather. I only love dresses with black tights and I manage to make all dresses and skirts look dowdy without tights.
I also prefer to be overdressed rather than under- dressed. I like to look smart and would never wear open toe sandals - just my personal choice, I think they are a sensible option but just not for me. In fact I like to wear heels every day too.

Would a jumpsuit be a viable alternative to a dress or are they too trendy and only for wearing socially?

No worse than a floaty dress, but probably a pain in the 3 seconds you have for a pee at the end of your so called lunch break. Be prepared for PA jibes from SMT, though, for not looking professional, along with any other women baring a bit of arm.

Thanks, yes that's the thing, it is as covered up if not more than all the summer dresses, but feels like a totally different category. So on the basis of it being a jumpsuit the principal might raise an eyebrow and yet she shows a lot more leg in her short dresses - think she wears sleeveless ones too, must remember to check that.
I am a conservative dresser by nature and usually think if you have to ask if it's appropriate then it's probably not, but this option would really get me out of a style problem - how to look smart and cool if you like heels and hate dresses/skirts.

Mmm I am a frequent toilet goer though - good point!

My mum was a teacher, and I vividly remember her wearing a jumpsuit to work in the 80s/early 90s. So I say go for it.

eeela · 16/05/2019 00:55

My favourite teacher at school used to wear jumpsuits or suit trousers with t shirts in the summer weather (10-ish years ago). She wore them consistently so I can't imagine it was ever an issue. The one from whistles pictured looks very teacher-y IMO - so a good choice!

gluteustothemaximus · 16/05/2019 01:00

Jumpsuits are lovely. But pain in the arse when you need a pee. Worse if it's a high zip at the back.

Thanks everyone.

Deputy Head here whose always in jumpsuits! We are a smart secondary school - I wear heels and go for ones with shoulder coverage or a jacket.

Thank you SarBear. I'm pleased to think I can capitalise on the fact that there are plenty of them in the shops now. Summer dressing for work is my nemesis so this could make a big difference!

Jumpsuits ( in general) yes!

But the one pictured is short sleeves, short legs and low neckline.

Lovely as it is ( and it is very nice) I'm not sure it's the right one for work?

OneOfTheGrundys · 16/05/2019 14:09

I shall be jump suiting tomorrow.
😊
No duties just teaching so I shall be free to pee and take as long as I like. (In theory!)

Pinkyyy · 16/05/2019 14:14

I love this and think it's perfectly suitable for you to wear at work. I don't find them particularly annoying when I have to go to the toilet. Where's this one from OP, if you don't mind my asking?

Pinkyyy · 16/05/2019 14:16

Totally disagree, in what world are those short legs? And the sleeve length is not an issue. If it's too low cut then wear a cami.

I’m an Ed psych and love a jumpsuit as I think it’s the perfect combination of practical and smart, for playing in a nursery in the morning to a formal meeting in a secondary school after lunch. I wear my navy one with a white cropped cardi or boucle jacket, as I’m always cold. I’d say go for it!

dreichuplands · 16/05/2019 15:25

I like jumpsuits, I think they are smart and practical.

LeapingAroundLikeA · 16/05/2019 15:25

It's from Whistles @Pinkyyy
I have my eye on it too but it's a bit too pricy for me

SarBear1980 · 16/05/2019 16:32

The M&S ones are great and a good price...stripes, spots, animal prints...with heels they look really smart but aren’t hot like dress/tights combo. On colder days I’ve worn them with leggings and vests under too!

Nyon · 16/05/2019 16:37

I've been wondering about this as well... I say go for it!

Lumene · 16/05/2019 16:52

As long as it is a smart one I would say fine. Jumpsuits feel like they are just on the cusp of becoming more generally accepted wear.

Pinkyyy · 16/05/2019 16:56

Thank you @LeapingAroundLikeA I'm not sure now, it's nice but as you say a bit pricey!

professionalnomad · 16/05/2019 17:52

I do

I wear on that looks pretty much like this with a pair of mid heels and a statement belt. I feel polished and professional.

neveradullmoment99 · 16/05/2019 18:18

Seriously though, would someone really say you were not to wear it? Certainly not in the school I am in. I wear trainers! No comments are ever made to anyone!

gluteustothemaximus · 19/05/2019 00:09

Have you checked out Next? On their clearance section they have some really smart jumpsuits x

PollyShelby · 19/05/2019 00:18

I would get a talking to if I wore that, but we can't wear sleeveless or 3/4 length trousers or leggings.

Chocolatecake12 · 19/05/2019 00:20

My teacher in my primary school wore a jumpsuit every day - summer and winter
It was the 80’s
Ms Brown
Oh the memories!!
The one pictured look great and professional- go for it!!

We have a dress policy, unfortunately. 'Professional' attire at all times.
