Foundation or bb cream for 45 year old?

My skin is dry with red patches. Armani foundation looks a bit caked on and i need a bucket of concealer to hide redness/blemishes. How do you get coverage and hide imperfections but look glowy/natural/not caked in makeup? What do you use? Thanks!

I’ve been looking for exactly the same thing - Also have dry skin with redness and blemishes particularly around mouth area.
I’ve just got a sample of Clinique beyond perfection, use body shop facial oil under it to give a dewy look, and the foundation can be used more liberally on the areas that need it most.
I’m really pleased and will be buying this when sample runs out.

I haven't got major skin issues but I find using two types of cover is best, one light weight product than a thicker (Estée Lauder double wear) on areas that need it.

I use a BB cream as the base and then cover the red areas with a little foundation (always apply with a brush). I've found that using a primer and a finisher makes a huge difference.

Yes, I use an illuminating primer, then illuminating foundation (Laura Mercier candle light glow) then apply double wear with a brush on the areas that need it. I may or may not dust with loose powder.

body shop bb cream is good.

hugoagogo · 15/05/2019 06:41

I would say you need a better moisturiser? I always bang on about eucerin, because before that nothing really worked and I always had dry flakey bits.
Foundation wise revlon is good for dry skin.

I am 43 and for a few years now I’ve been using Missha bb creams. My favourite is the MISSHA M Signature Real Complete BB in the palest colour (13). It is not covering enough for bright red acne or very dark circles, but it evens out skin tone and is one of those “my skin but better” ones. It’s also quite moisturising- in all honesty I prob look a little shiny most of the time but I say fuck it and call it dewy because I can’t be arsed. My self confidence is low enough to demand some sort of makeup routine but high enough for me to be happy with it being just bb cream and mascara Grin

Anyway it might just be perfect if you’re dry. I agree that it might be good to see if you can fix the dry skin patches first because as they say in Korea, skincare is the foundation of makeup Wink

The Bare Minerals one (think it’s called complexion rescue) is really nice - it’s what I wear most days and doesn’t cake. It can be a bit shiny on me but a very thorough cleanse improves that, and if it’s a very shiny day I’ll chuck on some powder afterwards (Rimmel stay matte is good).

I think really regular good exfoliation and hydration would be good - so some kind of peel (enzyme peels are really good for dry skin) and then hyaluronic acid and really good moisturiser before make up

Avene thermale do a nice hydrating moisturiser for sensitive and dry skin. I'm 40 and had red and dry skin, it was awful in the winter. I bought the hydrating serum and moisturiser and used them both morning and night and it transformed my skin. Which was nice!

Love2dance · 15/05/2019 10:51

Ideally sort out the skin issues first if possible - maybe you have sensitive skin or an allergy?
I tend to buy cheaper but uncomplicated moisturiser like Cetaphil then layer on:
Primer (Laura Mercier hydrating primer until it's finished but I actually
prefer the much cheaper NYX hydrating primer);
Mineral sunscreen (Dr Sam's or Elta MD);
IT Cosmetics CC cream spf 50 or Nars tinted moisturiser spf 30 for daytime, Armani Luminous silk of MAC Face and Body at night.

I use Retin A so I still get some flaking but this regime works for me. I need to leave 5-10 mins between applying sunscreen and any foundation otherwise it balls up and flakes.

Love2dance · 15/05/2019 10:57

Oh yes Avene too. Great moisturiser when skin's really dry. There is a nice eye cream too.I forgot to say in the morning I use a Vitamin C serum with hyaluronic acid which really helps. If I'm starting makeup for an evening out I'll use the Vichy Aqualia Thermal serum - also containing HA. It gives that extra bit of moisture to supplement my moisturiser and combat dryness later on.

HoppityChicken · 15/05/2019 11:00

Boots Instant Illusions Primer works well for me as a base, whatever I put on after that sits well and covers, BB or foundation.

Lumene · 15/05/2019 12:32

Erborian - I use the cc cream. No good if you wear spf as well though

FashionFiend · 15/05/2019 15:03

Thank you all! Going to invest in some primer for starters and maybe some tinted moisturiser. Really appreciate the advice!
