Fake tan recommendations please.

I've managed to reach the ripe old age of 50 without ever having tried fake tanning lotions/potions/whatever.

But for the past couple of years, I've worn trousers/jeans on a daily basis (apart from really warm days).

This now means that I have a natural 'olive-ish' colour on my arms/face/neck but my legs are ultra-grow white!

Can anyone recommend a fake tan I can buy over the counter? Something that's not too dark and will tide me over until I can get some colour on my legs, once I start wearing dresses/skirts a bit more?

I don't really think tinted moisturiser will cut it and I don't want to go for a spray tan, because I know I'll just keep putting it off.

I need something I can order online while I think to do it.

Thanks all.

Oh and what happens when I shave my legs?

Will I be left looking like a stripey stick of Blackpool rock? Blush

skinnytan mousse excellent. non streaky and easy to put on.

sleepwhenidie · 12/05/2019 20:35

Any and all versions of vita liberata. If you are nervous use the instant, wash off one. It doesn’t budge easily, especially off palms so use gloves/mitts when applying, but this is in general a good thing with regard to sofas and clothes. Other end of the scale is pHNeomenal which claims to last 2-3 weeks. I think this is a big call but it definitely lasts longer than any other self tan I’ve tried and fades beautifully, rather than leaving patches.

Shortandsweet20 · 12/05/2019 20:37

Skinny tan mousse or st tropez. Can never go wrong with those two!

WorraLiberty · 12/05/2019 20:45

Thanks for the recommendations.

I was looking at This Has anyone ever tried it? The reviews are glowing...pardon the pun Grin but not many of them in the grand scheme of things.

Haven't tried that one - but today tried this for the first time: www.boots.com/vita-liberata-phenomenal-2-3-week-self-tan-mousse-medium-125ml-10137571?cm_mmc=bmm-buk-google-ppc--PLAs--(GB:Whoop!)+Vita+Liberata-_-(GB:Whoop!)+Boots+Shopping+-+Category+-+Toiletries+-+Desktop&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIheTo5vGW4gIVg7TtCh0CvAaiEAQYASABEgLl6vD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
It was too confronting for me. Goes on bright green - like seaweed juice. That and when i put it on my arms/torso I did a crap job of it and missed spots. I...showered it off immediately.
Help. Please...Do i need someone else to apply it to my back and shoulders. Tips for application? And is this a good one I should persist with?

MrsMaisel · 12/05/2019 22:07

sleepwhenidie how do you make sure you apply it evenly? Do you use a mitt?

MrsMaisel · 12/05/2019 22:09

I just threw this in my amazon basket...
tanning mitt

Toothlessismyspiritanimal · 12/05/2019 22:11

Another vote for skinny tan!

WorraLiberty · 12/05/2019 22:16

Thanks all.

I might go for the Skinny one then and buy a mitt too.

St. Moritz mousse. Use a mitt to apply it AFTER you shave.

Beetle76 · 12/05/2019 22:17

I’m very pale and use skinny tan successfully! I use the daily moisturiser one and use it maybe once (or twice) a week to build gradual colour.

Cornishqween · 12/05/2019 22:20

I used to use instant tan and then I found the Palmers cocoa butter gradual tan. It is gradual but you see results same day, every time you apply it gets a little darker. It's not fake looking, smells amazing, leaves your skin beautifully soft and is so so forgiving. You just bung it on and let it dry. I usually do it for 2 or 3 days then stop for a few. Also another benefit is that it's relatively cheap.

WorraLiberty · 12/05/2019 22:23

Oh yes, when I was Googling earlier, I read lots of complaints that some fake tans smell of biscuits? Grin

Is that right? Do some smell weirder than others? I hadn't even considered that aspect.

Another vote for skinny tan mousse.buy the dark one, it's very natural.

Buy disposable latex gloves to apply it. I don't use the mitt although I have one. Just make sure you rub it in all over and wait a couple of mins before you dress and you're good to go.

I have used st tropez for years and recently switched to this and it's better, and it doesn't smell either or come off on the bedclothes.

Soozikinzi · 12/05/2019 22:30

Another vote for skinny tan I use the coconut one which smells really nice there's always offers on their website free mitts etc.

heidipi · 12/05/2019 22:54

M&S Autograph self tanning oil is great and doesn't have the smell! I'm pale and freckly and the light/medium one is subtle and builds up over a few applications. Costs about £12 and seems to be like the Clarins one that gets recommended a lot.

PersonaNonGarter · 12/05/2019 22:56

I really like the results from the vita liberata mousse - I never regret putting it on. Does smell tho, so put it on at night and wash off in the morning

sleepwhenidie · 14/05/2019 11:47

@MrsMaisel sorry, only just came back to the thread. It definitely has a green tinge going on but that seems to disappear when it sinks into your skin. I use latex gloves as I find I get bit of tan seeping through mitts. Mitt is useful for buffing feet and ankles/knees and elbows to finish off though. I can just about get to all of my back but a long handled body brush with a mitt over the brush would help!

Persona I don't find the vitaliberata smell bad at all!

DrFoxtrot · 27/05/2019 22:25

I'm also looking at these recommendations!

I'm looking for a fake tan that definitely doesn't smell biscuity, I've used several previously including the gradual tans from Dove and Johnson's, Clarins, Boots soltan and a spray tan (I think St Tropez?) and they all smell biscuity even though other people who use them say there's no smell. Is it my skin?

Is there such a thing as a 100%-definitely-not-biscuity fake tan?

Namechange8471 · 27/05/2019 22:27

Skinny tan.
You get what you pay for!

St moriz is bloody awful(and cheap!)

definitelyshouldknowbetter · 27/05/2019 22:39

The skinny tan daily moisturiser is fab and only about £8 in Superdrug, it doesn’t smell at all on me, DH commented I smelled coconutty when I last put it on and it goes s lovely even golden colour on my Casper white arms!

DrFoxtrot · 27/05/2019 23:52

I was looking at the Skinny Tan daily one, I don't mind coconut.

ReindeerTails · 27/05/2019 23:56

I have used lots of fake tans and now I just do Garnier Summer Body (dark). It's gradual but if you are quite liberal with application you get a good tan result. I am light-medium olive and used to use medium or dark fake tan but to be truthful it turned me unnaturally tanned which is fine if you want to look really tanned, but if you are looking for a shade or two tanned then I'd go for a gradual one.

PS buy a box of latex or similar gloves (supermarket) for application or your palms will stain! No mitt required though. If you ever use a mitt, use over these gloves as tan will soak through mitt to hands. Also put moisturiser on feet, ankles and elbows first and blend a lot round these areas.
