Internal layers / ghost layers - any experience?

Hi, my ridiculously thick hair has benefited somewhat from a Brazilian blow dry, but there is just too much of it still....it takes an age to dry / style, and never really sits properly.
Traditional layers end up looking like door steps, so I'm thinking to have internal layers cut. Has anyone had these, are they fab or does your hair just look weird and helmety?
Thanks in advance Wine

I have no idea what internal layers are, but I do have ridiculously thick hair and have managed to tame it somewhat with a combination of the Curly girl method (even though my hair is only wavy at best) and lots of layers/ thinning scissors.

I’ve never heard of internal layers; the best haircuts I’ve ever had have been razored to fuck - to prevent helmet head! So it sounds like that might be a gentler way.
Also had a substantial undercut a couple of years ago (and may again if it’s a hot summer) and that worked brilliantly, though it is quite an extreme look if you want to wear your hair up..

Internal layers are where you keep the bottom and top layers of your hair, and the hairdresser hacks fuck out of the middle until its much thinner. So it looks like a one layer cut you know?
I've been to so many hairdressers who have tried layers and they just look choppy as hell, I'm pretty desperate. I'm 37 and I've never liked my hair!

God that sounds scary, but if you do it please post about your experience!

If you are getting blocky layers, they they aren't very good layers. Sounds stupid but not all hairdressers can deal with lots of hair. Very thick hair or lots of hair doesn't behave the same way as thinner hair.

To be honest, if a hairdresser can't cut proper layers in your hair, I'd be very reluctant to let them do anything more complex or specialist. Do you know a hairdresser that does this style?

Could you ask anyone you know with thick hair where they go?

I know some people have great results with razoring their hair but again you need to be careful. I've had it done and the first time it wrecked my hair and caused split ends everywhere. The second time (different hairdresser) it made my hair look fluffy and sort of whispy as it grew.

I always wanted an undercut as a way to manage my hair but was never allowed by my parents and now by work!

I've emailed 3 of the poshest (most expensive) salons in the nearest big city to see if any of their stylists specialise in thick hair and would give me a consultation. I'm pregnant and my hair has multiplied even more than before I could lose 60% and still have "normal" hair I think!

If you have pregnancy hair I'd be cautious of trying anything drastic tbh. You don't know how much you'll shred afterwards or where from. They might cut it beautifully for the hair you have now but it might not work if your hair changes again.

No idea about internal layers but the best think I can do to get my hair to sit nicely is get it cut to one length, no layers, and I can blow dry it so quickly and it looks pretty decent.
