You’ve been so helpful with my question about shoes, I’m hoping someone can help me and DH look and feel our best generally for our big night out next weekend. We haven’t been out at night since our anniversary in August and won’t be going out again for some time. We are going to Le Gavroche, private dining, for BIL’s 40th. He and my sister are extremely stylish, and we haven’t had occasion to dress up for years. We have two young children with disabilities and babysitters don’t come around very often!

I’ve ordered this dress (just waiting for the kids to go to bed so I can try it on) and am working on the shoes (thanks everyone) but need to sort myself out so I’m not a hot mess!

I’ll break it down so people can chip in with their areas of expertise 😂

DH needs an outfit. He owns one suit that’s wheeled out for every occasion. He’s medium height, medium build and wants to look good but isn’t very adventurous. Dress code says jackets and ties aren’t essential, but I believe most men there will be wearing a jacket.

My hair I’ve recently bought a BBH and after a few attempts I’m getting the hang of it. But my hair is often still fluffy. I tried using Olaplex to see if it helped - it did a bit, but the next day my hair is really greasy and it was still fluffy. Looking for suggestions for treatments and styling products. Also suggestions for easy up dos I can do myself.

Skin where to start? I don’t even know the name of the main skin issue I have. I have enlarged pores, combination skin (gets very oily) and if you painted some PVA on your cheeks and smiled, that’s what my skin looks like. Lots of little lines, but not what fine lines looks like apparently. Estée Lauder resurface peel did help to an extent but I ran out a month or two ago and have neglected my skin since. I’ve just got some new products that are similar so will try them today but if anyone has any specific suggestions for this problem (or even knows what it’s called!) I’m all ears!

Make up Are there any foundations / primers that actually help to even out skin like this? I need foundation but most I’ve tried make my skin look worse! I’m going to go into town on Monday and try some out but there’s not a big range in my town (couple of Department stores).

I’ve ordered some of the new maybelline made for everyone lipsticks and I’m really hoping one suits me as I can never find lipsticks I like.

I’m going to get my eyebrows tidied up on Thursday - should I get a facial too, or is this a bad idea the day before an event?

Any suggestions for simple make up looks that would work?

Nails I planned to get a basic manicure as I have good strong nails... but of course, this week I have broken several. I don’t want to have to get fake nails that I have to maintain as it just wont happen! Any suggestions?

My confidence in my appearance is so low since I had my twins and I really just want to feel like I look my best. If you can help suggest anything, please do!

Does your budget allow to go to the hairdresser on the morning? Reckon a nice blow dry can make a big difference. For the nails, how about gel nails? They’ll last for a couple of weeks or so, and just go over your natural nails. And just eating well, drinking lots of water and exfoliating a little/moisturising can make a big difference. Have fun!

Should have said with gel nails you need them soaked off but can do this at home if you don’t want to keep getting them done - you just need acetone which you can get from Superdrug.

I second getting your hair done at the hair dressers.

I would love to get my hair done on the day but I don’t think it’s feasible - we have to drive to London with two toddlers in tow. Could possibly look at going in the morning but might be a mess anywhere by the time I get there!

Going to file my nails tomorrow and see if I can get them looking reasonable but I think a couple are just too short - might have to get some and then remove them shortly afterward as long nails and crappy nappies area bad combo 😂

Garnier pure active sensitive moisturiser with the salicylic acid in (will remove dead skin and help with pores. Not moisturising enough on its own)
A cleansing oil or balm - massage in and remove with a wet flannel
Evening primrose oil tablets - get rid of dryness and add smoothness and glow
Non gritty exfoliant - such as: The Body Shop Vitamin C Glow Revealing Liquid Peel or Primark Alex Steinheer peel pads or Pixi Glow Tonic or Paula's Choice salicylic

Apply body cream every morning or night within 3 minutes of washing
Exfoliating mitts or gloves after bath or shower

Volumising shampoo, mousse or thickening spray, blow dry hair upside down

I think a facial is a great idea. Ciuld you get a blow dry the night before and just not wash it on the day? a good do easily lasts 72 24 hours imo.

For Le Gavroche I'd personally consider a manicure, maybe even gel though i dont like the ruined natural nail that results, but not fake nails of any sort. Short polished is fine imo.

What bling have you got/can you borrow? I don't have pierced ears and always envy the big lift that a nice pair of earrings gives, plus my wrists are probably my best feature so I always wear something round my wrist plus a pendant, I'm not into hefty necklaces.

As a total klutz I prioritise spare tights...
