If you're a SAHM what do you wear day to day?

I live in skinnies and ugly jumpers. I feel the cold terribly so tend to go for practical clothes but I want to feel a bit more polished and grown up.
I'm in the process of sorting my hair out and my skin care/make up is OK when I can be bothered. But I need suggestions for alternatives that will keep me warm but look half decent! Footwear suggestions also very welcome. Big feet, live in ankle boots and primark converse.
29, size 12, 5'6" if it makes any difference.

I'm not a sahm as such but not working currently due to health issues.
Jumper dress and tights
Hoodie and slim fit next joggers
Breton top and jogger jeans
Long Cardigan, vest and leggings
Lucy and Yak dungarees with long sleeve top

TobyTall · 08/05/2019 16:37

Thanks for replying, some good ideas there. I like the idea of dungarees but I'm not sure if I could pull them off without looking like an overgrown kid. I know a woman who wears them and looks fabulous so I'll see how she styles them too.
Will look into the slim fit joggers as they sound like a good alternative to jeans. Cigarette trousers feel a bit formal somehow but these could be a good alternative.
I like jumper dresses and tights but just the thought of it makes me shiver. Maybe thicker tights than what I currently have would make this a but more accessible..

A midi dress. Can't go wrong with a midi dress. Sometimes m&s do absolute corkers like the constellation dress from last year and the red leopard one from last season. I never get more compliments than when I'm wearing these, they're low effort, floaty (so hide a multitude of sins Grin) and stylish.

With converses or trainers or ballet flats, or tights and boots in crap weather. Give a midi a go OP!

Someone on here recommended the Diesel jogger jeans. They are denim but really soft inside like joggers with stretchy waist. I got some primark ones for 10% of the price of the Diesel ones!
Dungarees look good if worn in dark colours with plain top underneath and low key accessories I think.

I picked up some cropped joggers in Marks and Spencer for 9.50 a pair and they're great for summer. Super comfy compared to cigarette trousers

fiorentina · 08/05/2019 17:47

I have made a conscious effort to not be in skinnies all the time so wear a mix of jumpsuits, pleated midi skirts with t-shirts and trainers, cropped straight jeans etc. I wear with tops from Other Stories, Cos, Uniqlo and a few bits from Warehouse. Trainer wise I have some Nike Air Force Ones, Veja, and some chunky sandals for summer.

I WFH most of the time rather than a SAHM but I’m generally in leggings, T-shirt and jumper with either wellies or trainers depending on lunch time dog walking conditions. No make up & sometimes brush my hair lol. God knows what state I’ll be in when this baby arrives 😂

TobyTall · 08/05/2019 18:47

Thanks for the suggestions! I do actually have a midi dress that I've just started wearing again. I am put off them a bit because they can make my legs look a bit stumpy, because I have big feet too I struggle with what shoes to put with them. I think trainers would look ridiculous on me but the one I have works fine with ballet flats. I'll shop around a bit more!
I need a good hunt in primark so will look out for these soft jogger jeans. Though it is still jeans, mine are long overdue replacing.
I tend to shy away from cropped trousers but if I can be talked into a midi then maybe I should give them another go!
Ha anon you sound just like me. I love a good cosy fleece and thermal legging combo. But I really want to make more effort, I feel like such a frump!

fiorentina do you have the uniqlo base layers at all? I was wondering if they might be the way forward in solving my cold issue!

Yes I do and really rate the Uniqlo base layers. I don’t wear them a lot but they are good.

prisscalledwanda · 08/05/2019 19:05

OP I had the same worry about trainers making my feet look gigantic so I ignored them as a footwear option for years. Then on a whim I tried some 'proper' ones (Nike trainers and also superga kicks) and actually they made my feet look SMALLER somehow. I was delighted. So I would really recommend trying on, you might be surprised.

BadmintonBadass · 08/05/2019 19:07

Jeans, jumper
Leggings, dress
Always converse
Literally don’t remember the last time I wore anything else Blush

JaneR0chester · 08/05/2019 19:27

Ooh I came on too to praise the Uniqlo Heat tech base layers - I've got so much wear out of my long sleeve top (under jumpers or layered under dresses or jumpsuits) and leggings (under skirts and dresses mostly). They've been a regular feature of my wardrobe this winter.

I mostly wear long dresses or skirts (with my thermal leggings underneath!) and ankle boots, in the winter. If it's dry then I might go for trousers and trainers. Often I'll layer a cardigan over my outfit for extra warmth.

Unbelievable18 · 08/05/2019 21:31

I am a WFH mum, wear either running gear (sorry, unhelpful I know, but it is comfy and warm!), leggings, smartish trackies/lounge pants, comfy jeans (not usually skinnies), dungarees, chinos and pinafore or slip on dresses/skirts if I'm out that day. I have a fantastic pair of NB slip on trainers that I have worn every day for the last 2 years pretty much, but sometimes wear Chelseas or Toms/sandals in the summer. I have several Uniqlo Heattech tops that I wear under wool or cashmere jumpers. I have a long wool cardigan that i wear in the house to keep warm too, it's pretty old now but does the job.

TobyTall · 10/05/2019 06:15

Thanks all, there's some food for thought here. I remember having a pair of trainers once that made my feet look quite small priss I think they might have been Stan smiths. I'll have another try!
I think it's time I invested in a warm base layer. I'm hoping that it will mean I can ditch the huge jumpers and actually show off my nice tops!
