Options for dealing with upper lip hair for older woman

Wiifitmama · 06/05/2019 20:34

I am about to turn 47. I am really trying for a "polished" look (stole word form another current thread). I have my hair highlighted and cut professionally and think it looks really good. I have nice gel nails. I put natural light makeup on each day. Etc. However, I do have hair on my upper lip that is now starting to bother me. I used to bleach it when I was younger but I stopped a couple of year ago as really all that did was make it look blond but still there! I have dark hair so it didn't work well. I am not keen on waxing and I also have a severe skin allergy to anything adhesive so am somewhat apprehensive.

What are my options? I did spend a bit of time with tweezers today plucking hairs then stopped as I wondered if it will grow back worse. Any thoughts?

Having my upper lip threaded was one of the most excruciating things I've ever done! It was agony. Never again.

Betsy86 · 06/05/2019 22:21

Jml flawless! Had mine a month and so far its been great:)

Puffykins · 06/05/2019 22:21

I threaded/ waxed/ plucked for years - it gradually became more and more wiry. Last year I bit the bullet and finally did laser hair removal, and it has been a total game changer. It's ALL gone. The cost has totally been worth it.

itsbetterthanabox · 06/05/2019 22:47

Get it threaded. You'll get a much cleaner finish than doing it yourself.
If you are allergic to adhesive it's unlikely you are allergic to wax as it's completely different. You could have a patch test done on your inner wrist to see.

Ellapaella · 07/05/2019 06:34

I used to thread but dear Lord it's painful! Lasts quite a while though, around 3 weeks.
I use the Veet face wax strips now, they're excellent and fine on sensitive skin.
Plucking would surely take ages and be terribly painful? Also plucking eyebrows and face hair seems to make me sneeze uncontrollably for some reason.

TapasForTwo · 07/05/2019 06:39

I use my epilator. Works a treat.

rosedream · 07/05/2019 07:11

I wax it. I bought a wax heater pot off amazon for about £20. I don't know what I'd do without it.

Floisme · 07/05/2019 07:27

Tweezers. I find it quite satisfying, like squeezing blackheads.
They seem to be getting thicker and tougher, which may be due to tweezing or may just be advancing age, but I reckon I'll soon be able to tug them out with my bare hands, which is a bonus.

(Incidentally why am I still getting blackheads at 62, huh?)

XingMing · 07/05/2019 12:28

Threading, but it does hurt.

LatinforTelly · 07/05/2019 12:34

Can I ask is the JML flawless a mini razor type thing or does it pluck?

teta · 07/05/2019 13:10

Braun facial epilator or
Braun pink battery hair trimmer sold in Boots.
I’m allergic to waxing.

I'm not entirely sure how it works. It definitely doesn't pluck so I guess more like a razor but doesn't feel like one and I don't seem to get stubble (and I have dark hair). I think it comes with a money back guarantee if you're not happy with it too.

wizzler · 07/05/2019 22:28

I use the twiddly spring thing from amazon... it's brilliant once you get the hang of it!

wildhairdontcare · 07/05/2019 22:31

I pluck.

MaryBoBary · 07/05/2019 22:45

I used some facial wax strips and it was awful. Removed all the hair but gave me little whitehead spots all across my upper lip and everywhere else id waxed on my face. Would not recommend!

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 08/05/2019 09:20

I have so many springy things, one in my hand bag, one by my bed, one in my travel bag, one in a drawer near the tv. They work well but gradually get looser with age so need to be replaced. I also use an ‘eyebrow shaper’ type razor though that’s more effective on my fuzzy cheeks than my upper lip.

Primark now do the springs, I noticed them yesterday and think they were £1.50.

LatinforTelly · 08/05/2019 10:09

Thanks @cosytoaster!

Ukelou · 08/05/2019 10:32

If you are allergic to plasters it is often the roision (sic) and most waxes contain it you can get waxes that don't so worth asking. And with the little spots after waxing you need to cleanse really thoroughly before waxing, professionals would use pre wax lotion and then cleanse afterwards with post wax lotion and look after the area for 12 hours afterwards no make up etc.

flownthecoopkiwi · 08/05/2019 11:06

I have a little rotary shaver thing I bought off amazon, works brilliantly and can throw into my handbag.

OceanViewSentosa · 08/05/2019 18:24

THIS

Laser hair removal (Lumea)
Veet facial
Threading

Debenhamshandtowel · 08/05/2019 18:29

Threading. £ 3 a go at my local nail bar. I don’t find it hurts. Well not after the first plucking a session as that numbs the skin.

Those springy things hurt like anything though. I think it’s because you’re doing it to yourself.

Hadn’t thought of myself as an older woman.

PlatypusPie · 08/05/2019 18:35

Threading, st the same time that I get my eyebrows done. Make sure you put your tongue firmly behind the part of the upper lip that is being threaded, so that it quite taut. Not painful so much as prickly and the regrowth is softer and sparser.

Butterflycookie · 08/05/2019 22:14

Jml flawless only £20

LazyLizzy · 08/05/2019 22:21

Another shaver here.

Smooth as a babies bum, hair grows back super soft. Quick and easy once every couple of weeks.

Grandadwasthatyou · 08/05/2019 22:41

Hair removal cream, despite the fact that it was for sensitive skin, burnt me terribly leaving me with little tiny blisters and a bright red moustache. Never again.
Tried laser but as my facial hair now consists of mainly silver wiry hairs that didn't work either.
Have found the springy thing best. I get it out every night and twirl away whilst watching tv. Best £1.50 I've ever spent.
